Yes, the Curt 55345 is designed for Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer vehicles in the SUV, mini and full-sized van category. The harness connects to the taillight assemblies on both the driver and passenger sides. Verify your vehicle matches these applications before purchasing.
The Curt 55345 is a custom wiring harness that connects to your vehicle's taillight assemblies to provide trailer lighting circuits. It includes a converter box and a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The harness integrates with your vehicle's existing taillight wiring to supply signal and tail/running light power to a trailer.
You will need a Phillips screwdriver, a flat blade screwdriver, and a panel trim removal tool. If you need to drill a grounding hole, you will also need a drill with a 3/32" bit. All other required hardware, including the screw for the ground wire, double-sided tape, cable ties, and 4-flat dust cover, are provided.
The harness connects behind the taillight assemblies on both sides of the vehicle. On the driver side, insert the harness end with the yellow wire between the top two separated connectors and the brown wire between the bottom connectors. On the passenger side, use the harness end with the green wire and repeat the same connection sequence. The converter box is mounted inside the vehicle near the taillight using double-sided tape.
Open the vehicle tailgate and remove the Phillips screws securing the taillight assembly. Carefully pull the taillight rearward, taking care not to damage the alignment tabs on the back. Once removed, you can access the taillight wiring harness connectors behind the housing.
Separate the top two connectors from the taillight housing first, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end with the appropriate coloured wire between the separated connectors: yellow wire between the top connectors, brown wire between the bottom connectors on the driver side; green wire on the passenger side. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
You may be able to use an existing screw with a nut in the vehicle frame as a grounding point. If no suitable existing point is available, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Signal circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side. Tail and running light circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
The harness includes wires in the following colours: yellow (driver side top connectors), brown (driver side bottom connectors), green (passenger side), and white (ground wire). The black power wire connects to the vehicle battery. Route the 4-flat connector to the centre of the vehicle and out of the trunk when in use, or roll up and store in the trunk when not in use.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with a nut in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole if needed. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and the provided screw. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under surfaces to avoid damage.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The converter box should be positioned in a secure location where it will not be disturbed during vehicle use.
When in use, route the 4-flat connector to the centre of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties to prevent tangling and damage.
All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or by connecting a properly wired trailer. This will verify that all circuits are working correctly before using the harness in service.
Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. The signal circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side and the tail/running circuits at 6.0 amps total. Exceeding these ratings can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. Check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for your specific lamp load rating.
Reinstall all items removed during installation, including the taillight assemblies and any trim panels. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. Test the harness for proper function using a test light or a properly wired trailer before using it in service.
The kit includes the custom wiring harness with connectors in yellow, brown, and green; a white ground wire with ring terminal; a black power wire; a converter box; a 4-flat connector with dust cover; double-sided tape for mounting the converter box; cable ties for securing loose wires; and a screw for the ground wire connection.
