No. Installing air springs will not change the GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating), GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating), or GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of your vehicle. You must not exceed the maximum load listed in your vehicle's owner's manual or on the Safety Compliance Certification Label. Exceeding the GVWR is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
Required tools include: hoist or floor jacks; 2 safety stands; safety glasses; torque wrench; standard open-end combo wrenches; medium crescent wrench; ratchet; metric and standard sockets; #6 and 7/32" allen wrenches (socket versions preferred); 5/16" drill bit (very sharp); heavy duty drill; hose cutter, razor blade or sharp knife; air compressor or compressed air source; and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution for leak testing.
Yes. Unbolt and remove the stock jounce bumpers from under the frame rails on both sides before installing the kit. This is a necessary step. The internal jounce bumper inside the air spring replaces the factory bumper.
Raise the vehicle using a hoist or floor jacks and support it with jack stands or equivalent so that the axle can be safely dropped away from the frame. This clearance is necessary to position the air spring assembly between the axle and frame. The manual shows a drive-on hoist as an example.
Yes. You must drill a 5/16" hole to install the inflation valves. The manual recommends choosing a convenient location such as wheel well flanges, license plate recess in bumper, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate itself. Ensure there is enough clearance around the inflation valves for an air chuck.
Use a hose cutter, razor blade, or sharp knife to cut the air line. Make a clean, square cut to prevent leaks. Do not use wire cutters or scissors, as these tools may flatten or crimp the air line, causing it to leak around the O-ring seal inside the elbow fitting. A poor cut can damage the fitting and render it useless.
The M10-150 X 35 button head screw (part O) that attaches the upper frame bracket to the frame should be torqued to 30 ft-lbs. Push the flange on the bracket up against the frame before torquing.
The 3/8"-24 X 7/8" flat head screws (part H) that attach the bellows bracket to the air spring assembly should be torqued to no more than 20 ft-lbs.
Once the bellows bracket is adjusted so that the bellows is parallel to the upper and lower brackets, torque the upper hardware to 15 ft-lbs.
The axle clamp bar (part A) should be torqued evenly to 10 ft-lbs once the lower bracket is parallel to the upper bracket.
The lower mounting hardware on the lower brackets should be torqued to no more than 20 ft-lbs after the bellows has been slid along the slots of the lower bracket for final alignment of the air spring.
Install the 90° swivel fitting (part G) into the top of the bellows finger-tight plus one and a half turns. This is done after setting a roll plate over the top of the bellows.
Set the roll plate (part F) over the top of the bellows (part E) with the radius (rounded) edge of the roll plate facing toward the air spring, so that the air spring is seated inside both roll plates.
The flange on the frame bracket (part B) must be on the inside of the frame rail and pointing up. Push the flange up against the frame before torquing the M10-150 X 35 button head screw to 30 ft-lbs.
Insert two 3/8"-16 X 6" carriage bolts (part M) through the lower bracket so that they are on the opposite side of the fittings on the air spring assembly. The long carriage bolt in the rear of the lower bracket must fit between the brake/ABS lines and the axle.
P-clamps (part L) are installed on both sides of the assemblies (left driver and right passenger) on the back carriage bolts only. They help secure the air line and keep it away from other components, particularly the rear HVAC lines on the driver side.
The bellows bracket is slotted so it can be adjusted forward or rearward. Move the bellows assembly so that the bellows is parallel to the upper and lower brackets. Once parallel, torque the upper hardware to 15 ft-lbs. Then slide the bellows along the slots of the lower bracket for final alignment and torque the lower mounting hardware to no more than 20 ft-lbs.
On the driver side behind the axle, the ABS line must be adjusted so it does not rub on the lower bracket. Pull the line out of the holder on the axle, rotate it 180°, and push it back into the holder. This changes the position of the line to prevent contact with the lower bracket.
Insert the air line into the 90° swivel fitting until it bottoms out. Approximately 9/16" of air line should be in the fitting. This is a push-to-connect fitting.
Route the air line along the frame to the air fitting on the air spring. Keep at least 6" clearance between the air line and heat sources such as exhaust pipes, muffler, or catalytic converter. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use plastic tie straps (part BB) to secure the air line to fixed, non-moving points along the chassis. Tie straps should be tight but not pinch the air line. Leave at least 2" of slack to allow for movement that might pull on the air line. Route the hose through the P-clamps previously installed on both sides, especially important on the driver side to keep the airline away from rear HVAC lines if equipped.
Cut off the air line leaving approximately 12" of extra air line. A clean square cut will ensure against leaks.
Place a 5/16" hex nut (part GG) and star washer (part FF) on the air valve. Leave enough of the inflation valve in front of the nut to extend through the hole and have room for the rubber washer (part EE), flat washer (part DD), and another 5/16" hex nut (part GG) and valve cap (part CC). There should be approximately 1/2" of valve exposed after installation to easily apply a pressure gauge or air chuck. Push the inflation valve through the hole and use the rubber washer, flat washer, and hex nut to tighten and secure the assembly in place.
Bend the tabs on the heat shield to provide a 1/2" dead air space between the exhaust pipe and heat shield. Attach the heat shield to the exhaust pipe using clamps. Bend the heat shield for maximum clearance to the air spring. The distance from the heat shield to the bellows must be at least 1/2".
The minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI, but the air springs can safely be run at zero air pressure. The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. Never exceed 100 PSI. Operating the vehicle below the minimum air spring pressure of 5 PSI will void the Air Lift warranty.
Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI or more. A "loaded vehicle" refers to a vehicle with a heavy bed load, a trailer, or both. The springs in this kit will support approximately 40 lbs. of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. The required air pressure will vary depending on the state of the original suspension and the load. Always adjust the air pressure to maintain normal ride height. Never exceed your vehicle's GVWR regardless of air spring pressure or other load assist.
Yes. The LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate can safely be run at zero air pressure because the internal jounce bumper inside the spring absorbs shock and eliminates harsh jarring. However, the recommended minimum air pressure is 5 PSI to maintain normal ride height. Operating below 5 PSI will void the Air Lift warranty.
The vehicle can be lifted on a hoist for short-term service work such as tire rotation or oil changes without deflating the air springs. However, if the vehicle will be on the hoist for a prolonged period of time, support the axle with jack stands to take the tension off the air springs. If it becomes necessary to raise the vehicle by the frame, make sure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce tension on the suspension and brake components. Use of on-board leveling systems do not require deflation or disconnection.
Inflate the air springs to 60 PSI and ensure there is at least 1/2" clearance around each bellows away from anything that might rub against them. Be sure to check the tire, brake drum, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. Also ensure at least 6" clearance from heat sources such as exhaust pipes, muffler, or catalytic converter. If a heat shield was included in the kit, install it. If there is no heat shield but one is required, call (800) 248-0892.
Inflate the air springs to 60 PSI and check all connections for leaks with a soapy water solution made of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water. Spot leaks easily by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road tested. After the initial test, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore normal ride height, no less than 5 PSI.
Recheck air pressure after the vehicle has been used for 24 hours. A 2–4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. If the pressure has dropped more than 5 PSI, there is a leak that must be fixed. Either fix the leak yourself or return to the installer for service.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. If any part shows signs of rubbing or abrasion, identify the source and move it if possible. If it is not possible to relocate the cause of the abrasion, the air spring may need to be remounted. If professionally installed, consult the installer. Check all fasteners for tightness.
After completing clearance, leak, heat, and fastener tests, road test the vehicle. Inflate the air springs to 25 PSI (or 50 PSI if the vehicle is loaded). Drive the vehicle 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Recheck all bolts for proper torque after installation. Retorque after 100 miles.
Check the air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI.
On occasion, give the air springs a hard spray with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other abrasive debris.
If the air springs are properly installed and maintained, they can last indefinitely.
No. Air pressure can be adjusted with any type of compressor as long as it can produce sufficient pressure to service the springs. Even a bicycle tire pump can be used, but it requires a lot of work.
Use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. Leak test the air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings in the control system. Inspect the air lines to be sure none are pinched; tie straps may be too tight. Loosen or replace the strap and replace leaking components. Inspect the air line for holes and cracks and replace as needed. Look for a kink or fold in the air line and reroute as needed. If the preceding steps do not solve the problem, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 for assistance.
If there is a problem with the swivel fitting, first check the air line connection by deflating the spring and removing the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line, ensuring the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting. If it still leaks, check the threaded connection by tightening the swivel fitting another 1/2 turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, and re-coat the threads with thread sealant. Reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible, then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
If there is a problem with the inflation valve, first check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. Then check the air line connection by removing the air line from the barbed type fitting. Do not cut the air line completely off as this will nick the barb and render the fitting useless.
If the vehicle's headlights are shining into the trees or the vehicle is leaning to one side, it is not level. Raise the air pressure to correct either of these problems and level the vehicle. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle. Loads such as water, fuel, and appliances will cause the vehicle to be heavier on one side. As much as a 50 PSI difference is not uncommon.
If the vehicle has a rough or harsh ride, it may be due to either too much pressure or not enough. Try different pressures to determine the best ride comfort. Adjust the pressure up and down to find the best ride.
Stability issues include roll control, bounce, dive during braking, and sponginess. Tuning out these problems usually requires an increase in pressure. If the front of the vehicle dives while braking, increase the pressure in the front air bags if equipped. If it is suspected that the air bags have bottomed out, increase the pressure. If the vehicle rocks and rolls, adjust the air pressure to reduce movement.
