The jounce bumper strike plate/axle spacer block must be moved from one side to the other to provide clearance for the air spring assembly. With the vehicle on a hoist, block one tire front and rear with chocks, lift the frame slightly to relieve pressure on the leaf springs, and place a safety stand under the front of the differential. Mark the back side of each jounce bumper strike plate/axle spacer for reference. Remove the stock U-bolts on both sides and discard them. Lower the axle or raise the frame to remove the jounce bumper strike plates/spacer blocks, then swap them side-to-side (driver's left to passenger's right and vice versa) and reinstall between the leaf spring and axle. The mark on the back must face the rear, with the strike plate facing the wheel.
The jounce bumper strike plate/axle spacer block must be moved from one side to the other to provide clearance for the air spring assembly, which installs between the axle and frame. If the jounce bumper strike plate/spacer block is not positioned correctly, the pinion angle will be incorrect and may cause vibration while operating.
Drilling is required only for the Schrader valve installation. You must drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole in your chosen location for each Schrader valve (inside fuel tank filler door, inside rear wheel wells, or license plate/rear bumper area). No drilling is required for the main air spring assembly installation.
You must cut the end of a bracket using a hack saw or grinder with a cut-off wheel to make room for the lower bracket (marked location shown in Fig. 7). The ABS/brake line bracket may also need to be trimmed if the lower bracket does not fit into position without interference. Additionally, the jounce bumper cup must be unbolted from the frame, and the driver's side ABS line must be removed from the ABS/brake line junction bolted to the axle and zip-tied to the axle vent tube. The emergency brake line bracket must be removed from the axle on the front, passenger's right side.
The upper frame brackets (C & D) must be torqued to 38 lb.-ft. (52 Nm) using the M10 bolt (R) and flat washer (W).
In a criss-cross pattern, evenly torque the U-bolts to 90 lb.-ft. (122 Nm). U-bolts must be retorqued after 100 miles.
The 3/8" lower bracket axle clamp hardware must be torqued to 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm).
The two flat-head screws (K) that attach the upper spring brackets (E and F) to the air springs must be torqued to no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm).
The 3/8" carriage bolts (P) that attach the air spring assemblies to the upper and lower brackets must be torqued to 31 lb.-ft. (42 Nm).
The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI (7 BAR). Never inflate beyond this pressure. The minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR).
The manual does not describe any electrical connections or wiring for the air spring system itself. The only electrical-related work mentioned is relocating the driver's side ABS line from the ABS/brake line junction bolted to the axle and zip-tying it to the axle vent tube. The air springs provide up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg) of load-leveling support. However, you must not exceed the maximum GVWR or payload rating as indicated by the vehicle manufacturer. The air pressure actually needed is dependent on load and GVWR.
Keep at least 6 inches (152 mm) of clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system. Avoid sharp bends and edges. The minimum bend radius for the air line is 1 inch (25 mm). Leave at least 2 inches (51 mm) of slack in the air line to allow for any movement that might pull on the air line.
The heat shield is a protective barrier installed above the air spring assembly on the inside pipe to protect the air line from exhaust heat. It must be positioned between the pipe and the air line with at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) of dead air space between the shield and exhaust. The kit includes a heat shield for the passenger's right side air line. If a heat shield is required but not included, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
Before operating the vehicle, perform the following checks: (1) Clearance test—inflate air springs to 40–60 PSI (2.8–4.1 BAR) and verify at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) clearance from anything that might rub (tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, brake cables). (2) Leak test—inflate to 40–60 PSI and check all connections for leaks; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. (3) Heat test—verify at least 6 inches (152 mm) clearance from heat sources; install heat shield if included. (4) Fastener test—after 500 miles (800 km), recheck all bolts for proper torque. (5) Road test—drive 10 miles (16 km) and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height and never inflate beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR). If the system develops an air leak, use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. U-bolts must be retorqued after 100 miles. After 500 miles (800 km), recheck all bolts for proper torque.
Use a spray bottle with a soapy water solution (dish soap and water). Spray all air line connections and the inflation valve core. Bubbles will form at any leak location. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road-tested. If you find a leak, deflate and remove the air spring before attempting repairs.
