The two forward holes on the rear rail must pass through both the bed and the cross member.
The manual warns that the fuel tank may be directly below the area of the bed that needs to be drilled. You must carefully examine the area under the truck before drilling to ensure the tank or other equipment is not damaged. Damage to the fuel tank may result in property damage, serious injury, or death. Always verify the location of the fuel tank and other components before proceeding with drilling.
The distance depends on your truck's bed length. For an 8' long bed, measure 28–3/8" from the rear edge of the bed. For a 6'6" short bed, measure 26–3/8" from the rear edge of the bed. Use a tape measure hooked over the rear edge of the bed (not on the tailgate) to determine this measurement. See Figure A1 in the manual.
Measure the distance from the edge of the mounting rail to the sides of the bed on both the driver and passenger sides. The rail is centered when both measurements are equal. Adjust the rail position until these measurements match.
U-shaped spacers are space fillers that must be placed between the mounting rails and attachment hardware to account for the corrugation of the truck bed. They go either above the bed (between the mounting rail and bed) or below the bed (between the bed and side mounting brackets). Failure to use U-shaped spacers will result in property damage when hardware is tightened. The kit includes 10 U-shaped spacers.
The process uses fish wires to route carriage bolts through the truck frame. First, attach a 1/2" × 2" carriage bolt to a fish wire. Locate the 1–1/2" hole in the bottom of the frame (roughly 14 inches from the frame end), and position a locking strap into it. Thread the fish wire through the square hole in the locking strap and into the frame. Feed the fish wire until it emerges through the forward hole (another 14 inches forward). Push the locking strap completely into the frame, pull the fish wire to pass the carriage bolt into the frame, and maneuver the bolt into the square hole in the locking strap. Pull the carriage bolt out through the frame and remove the fish wire. Repeat for both sides.
Each rear frame bracket is secured with one U-bolt and one carriage bolt (passed down through the bed). Fastening uses three 1/2" flat washers, 1/2" lock washers, and 1/2" finish nuts per bracket. Additionally, an offset rectangle washer, 1/2" flat washer, 1/2" lock washer, and 1/2" nut are installed on each carriage bolt passing through the bed. All nuts are hand-tightened initially and then torqued to 80 ft-lbs.
Place the forward mounting rail in the truck bed in front of the rear mounting rail. Position your Patriot 5th wheel or Slider Base over the rail attachment points and carefully lower it until the pin tabs pass through the attachment points on the rear mounting rail. Attach the forward mounting rail to the forward mounting points on the base. The base should rest flat against the top of the rails. Before drilling forward mounting holes, pull the RV base toward the rear of the truck and push the forward rail toward the cab to correctly space the mounting rails.
Five 1/2" × 2" carriage bolts are installed through the five drilled positions in the forward mounting rail. A U-shaped spacer is placed between the bed and the mounting rail at each of the five drilled positions. Under the bed, an offset square washer, 1/2" flat washers, 1/2" lock washers, and 1/2" finish nuts are installed on each carriage bolt. All nuts are hand-tightened initially.
Locate the driver side front bracket, a U-bolt, two 1/2" × 2" carriage bolts, 1/2" flat washers, 1/2" lock washers, and 1/2" finish nuts. Position the bracket behind the cross member under the installation location of the forward mounting rail. Maneuver the bracket so that the 1/2" carriage bolt passes through the slot at the top of the bracket. While holding the bracket flat against the outside of the frame, pass the U-bolt over the frame and through the bracket and secure with 1/2" hardware. Repeat for the passenger side. Hand-tighten each nut initially.
All 1/2" nuts in the mounting rails must be torqued to 80 ft-lbs. All 1/2" nuts in the frame brackets must also be torqued to 80 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to apply these specifications. Torque the mounting rail nuts first, then the frame bracket nuts.
Do not exceed the tow or tongue rating of the coupler, hitch, truck, or trailer. Consult your vehicle and trailer manufacturer information for ratings. Exceeding these ratings may cause damage to towing components or loss of attachment between the trailer and truck. When towing a wedge car trailer, keep the center of gravity as low as possible by loading heavy cars over the axles. Never tow with a single car on the front of the trailer. Never exceed speeds that are reasonable for roadway conditions (turns, curves, etc.).
