A removable bed liner must be removed before installation. If you have a spray-in bed liner, it is acceptable to install the mounting rails over it. A removable or mat-type liner will interfere with the rail connection to the bed and must be removed or cut to allow direct contact.
The kit includes: 2 Patriot Rail Box mounting rails (RVR3210); Bracket Set Box (RVR2605) with 4 frame brackets, 2 stiffening plates, 4 U-bolts (1/2" × 6 3/4" × 4 1/2"), and hardware bags containing carriage bolts, washers, nuts, spacers and other fasteners. Verify all parts against the parts list on page 1 before installation.
Required tools: impact wrench or ratchet with 3/4" socket; 3/4" box end wrench; drill with 1/8", 9/16" and 7/8" drill bits; tape measure; center punch tool; torque wrench; eye protection; ear protection; flashlight; and hammer. You will also need a Patriot 5th wheel or Slider Base to position the forward rail during installation.
It may be necessary to remove the spare tire and/or heat shield before installation, depending on your truck configuration. The manual notes this as a possibility but does not make it mandatory for all installations. Inspect your truck during preparation to determine if removal is needed.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill 5 holes for the rear mounting rail and 5 holes for the forward mounting rail in the truck bed. The rear rail requires three 9/16" holes and two 7/8" holes. The forward rail requires five 9/16" holes. All holes start as 1/8" pilot holes, then are enlarged to the final size. Drilling passes through the bed and, for the rear rail, through the bed cross member.
You need three drill bit sizes: 1/8" (for pilot holes), 9/16" (for frame bracket holes and forward rail holes), and 7/8" (for forward mounting rail holes in the bed only). The 1/8" holes are drilled first, then enlarged to 9/16" or 7/8" as appropriate for each location.
The rear mounting rail location depends on bed length. For an 8-foot long bed, measure 28-3/8" from the rear edge of the bed. For a short bed, measure 26-9/16" from the rear edge. Center the rail side-to-side so measurements from the rail edge to each bed side are equal. See Figure A2 for the five drill hole locations (marked by black dots). The two forward drill locations are directly above the bed cross member.
Centering the rail ensures proper alignment and function of the 5th wheel hitch. The manual states that the mounting rail is designed to install only at the described location, and failure to place it precisely may result in added difficulty during installation and/or property damage.
Before drilling, carefully examine the area under the truck where drilling will occur. The fuel tank may be directly below the bed area that needs to be drilled. Ensure the tank and other equipment are not damaged during drilling. Damage to the fuel tank may result in property damage, serious injury or death.
1. Layout and mark the rear mounting rail location. 2. Drill 1/8" pilot holes for the rear rail. 3. Check hole alignment with frame brackets. 4. Enlarge rear holes to 9/16" and 7/8". 5. Install the rear mounting rail with carriage bolts and U-shaped spacers. 6. Install rear frame brackets and U-bolts. 7. Position the forward mounting rail using the base. 8. Drill forward mounting holes. 9. Enlarge forward holes to 9/16". 10. Install the forward mounting rail. 11. Install front frame brackets. 12. Torque all hardware to 80 ft-lbs. 13. Secure any wiring and reinstall heat shield and spare tire if removed.
U-shaped spacers are space fillers that go between the mounting rails and the truck bed (or between the bed and side mounting brackets) to account for bed corrugation. They must be placed in the gap either above or below the bed at each bolt location. Failure to use U-shaped spacers will result in property damage when hardware is tightened. The manual notes that spacers may not straddle the bolt due to bed corrugation; place them under the rail near the bolt.
Place the forward mounting rail in the truck bed in front of the rear mounting rail. Place the Patriot 5th wheel or Slider Base over the rail attachment points and carefully lower it until the pin tabs pass through the attachment points on the rear mounting rail. Attach the forward mounting rail to the forward mounting points on the base. The base should rest flat against the top of the rails. Before drilling forward holes, pull the RV base towards the rear of the truck and push the forward rail towards the cab to correctly space the mounting rails.

At each bolt location, place a U-shaped spacer between the bed and the mounting rail. Under the bed, install an offset square washer, 1/2" flat washers, 1/2" lock washer and 1/2" finish nut on each carriage bolt. Hand tighten initially, then torque to 80 ft-lbs.
Each frame bracket is secured with a U-bolt (1/2" × 6 3/4" × 4 1/2") fastened to the frame with two 1/2" flange nuts. The driver side bracket also has a 1/2" × 4 1/2" carriage bolt secured with a 1/2" flange nut. Wiring may need to be pulled away from the frame to allow the U-bolt to pass over the frame. Do not install frame brackets or U-bolts over wiring or brake lines; always place hitch components directly against the frame.
All 1/2" nuts must be torqued to 80 ft-lbs. This includes: all 1/2" nuts in the mounting rails (carriage bolts securing the rails to the bed) and all 1/2" nuts in the frame brackets (U-bolts and carriage bolts securing brackets to the frame). Use a torque wrench to achieve the correct specification. Hand tighten all nuts first, then torque in a second pass.
A visual inspection of the hitch should be performed before each time you tow. Regularly check that all pinned connections are secure and that all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification (80 ft-lbs). Check for cracks or damage to the hitch. Do not tow with the hitch if cracks or damage outside of normal wear is found. Towing with a damaged hitch could result in damage to the tow vehicle, trailer, towing components and loss of attachment between the tow vehicle and trailer.

Failure to account for proper trailer center of gravity and reasonable speeds may cause damage to the truck, trailer, towing components and loss of attachment.

After installation, check that any wiring that was moved or detached has been re-secured to the frame.
Yes. The Patriot 5th wheel or Slider Base is required during installation to position the forward mounting rail correctly. The base is placed over the rail attachment points, and the forward rail is attached to the forward mounting points on the base. The base should rest flat against the top of the rails. After positioning and drilling, the base can be removed.
Stiffening plates are included in the bracket set (2 plates total). They are positioned flat against the inside of the frame behind the frame brackets to provide additional structural support. The driver side rear bracket uses one stiffening plate, and the driver side front bracket uses one stiffening plate. The passenger side brackets do not use stiffening plates.

Measure the distance from the edge of the rail to each side of the bed. The rail is centered when both measurements are equal. If not centered, reposition the rail and re-mark the drill locations before drilling.
Verify that all 1/2" nuts have been torqued to 80 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. Check both the mounting rail nuts (carriage bolts securing the rails to the bed) and the frame bracket nuts (U-bolts and carriage bolts). Hand-tightened nuts are not sufficient; torque specification must be met.
