Equip your vehicle with this robust hitch to safely tow your gooseneck trailer. The removable ball can be stored upside down in the hitch when not in use, providing complete bed access. The square ball base is designed to stay put in the hitch.
The B&W Turnoverball under-bed gooseneck trailer hitch offers the best of both worlds. It provides a sturdy, reliable connection with your gooseneck trailer for towing, and when not in use, the ball can be stowed upside down in the hitch for full bed access and a clean look.
The durable steel hitch ball included with the Turnoverball system is secured in the hitch with a sturdy, 5/8" thick steel pin integrated into the end of the operating handle. To lock the ball in place, drop it into the hitch hole in your truck bed. Then rotate the handle in your driver's-side wheel well counterclockwise until the latch engages. When the latch is engaged, the spring-loaded pin on the end of the handle will be inserted all the way through the base of the hitch ball, forming a strong, solid connection for secure towing.
When you're done towing, remove the hitch ball by pulling the handle out as far as it will go and then rotating it clockwise until it unlatches. Flip the ball upside down and drop it back into the ball hole of the hitch. Then reengage the latch to secure the stowed ball in place.
The Turnoverball hitch ball is designed with a square base, unlike typical gooseneck balls with round bases. This design makes latching the ball in the hitch easier as the base won't rotate inside of the hitch, making pin alignment a breeze. The base of the ball also fits tightly within the ball hole during storage, preventing any dirt or grime buildup that could cause the ball to seize up in the hitch.
This hitch is custom designed for your vehicle. The included mounting brackets bolt to existing holes in your truck's frame. While some modification is required - you will need to cut a 4" diameter hole in your bed for the hitch ball and drill holes for the built-in safety chain loops - there is no need to weld onto or to drill into your frame.
Once you have the hitch brackets and body installed, set up the operating handle. This handle is designed to be accessed from the rear driver's-side wheel well. On the end of the handle is the heavy-duty steel pin that secures the hitch ball.
B&W makes it easy to tow just about anything. With the many adapters and accessories available, the Turnoverball can be made to work with almost any gooseneck trailer. Hitch balls are available that have a built-in rise, an offset, and even a different connection type. Compatibility with vehicles having replacement parts or other modifications is not guaranteed. Inspect your vehicle for modifications before installation.
Yes, the 1059R is designed for all bed lengths, including short beds. However, before installation, you must check for adequate turning clearance between the front of your trailer and the truck cab, as short-bed trucks have less clearance. The 4-inch hole location for short beds (less than 8 feet long) is 44 1/4 inches from the back end of the truck bed floor.
The kit includes two main boxes: the Center Box (GNRC959N) containing the center section, 2-5/16-inch ball, latch pin handle, safety chain kit, U-bolts, conical springs, and fasteners; and the Mounting Kit Box (GNRM1059) containing front and rear sideplates, front and rear crossmembers, U-bolts, bushings, and all required bolts, washers, nuts, and an O-ring. The manual specifies a 4-inch hole saw or saber saw with metal-cutting blade, sheet metal shears, and wrenches for fasteners. An overhead lifting device such as chain falls, engine hoist, or cable come-a-long is recommended to lift the center section into position. A 3/4-inch piece of plywood is recommended as a drilling guide to prevent the hole saw from moving. A 6-inch to 8-inch wood block is needed to support the exhaust pipe during removal of the exhaust bracket.
Yes. Step One requires removal of the spare tire and heat shield. The heat shield under the bed floor must either be removed entirely or a section cut out for the hitch assembly to be installed. Specifically, remove the heat shield from in front of the rear crossmember and from the back of the crossmember located near the front of the wheel well.
Yes. Step Two requires removal of the lower exhaust bracket to ease installation of the center section. Pull the hanger rod out of the rubber bracket hole. A 6-inch to 8-inch wood block can then be positioned between the exhaust pipe and the truck frame to increase clearance between the top of the exhaust pipe and the bottom of the truck bed floor. Caution: the exhaust pipe may be hot. The exhaust bracket must be replaced in Step Eleven after the hitch installation is complete.
Most trucks have fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wires located along the frame rails where the hitch installs. Carefully examine the location of these components before installation. Be certain you will not damage them when positioning hitch components, drilling holes, and tightening fasteners. Pay special attention to the fuel tank vent located on top of the gas tank, which can be easily damaged during installation of the front crossmember and center section components. Take care when positioning these components.
Measure from the back end (tailgate end) of the truck bed floor. For an 8-foot long bed, the hole location is 49 1/2 inches from the back. For short beds (less than 8 feet long), the hole location is 44 1/4 inches from the back. Center the location between the wheel wells. This will be the center point for the 4-inch hole. Measure, mark, and cut carefully, as this location is critical to correct installation. Use a 4-inch hole saw or mark a 4-inch circle and cut it out with a saber saw equipped with a metal-cutting blade. A 3/4-inch piece of plywood can be used as a drilling guide to prevent the hole saw from moving.
Yes. A small notch must be made in the sheet metal flange hanging down from the bottom of the truck bed floor on the passenger side to allow the front crossmember to be installed. Locate the center truck bed crossmember. Measure 2 1/2 inches from the front of the crossmember and mark this as the center point of the notch. Mark a 1-inch wide by 1/2-inch tall notch. Remove the marked metal using sheet metal shears. This allows the front angle iron crossmember to be installed.
Yes. Step Ten requires drilling four 1/2-inch holes through the truck bed floor for the safety chain brackets. Drill the holes from beneath the truck through the two holes located on each side and closest to the round receiver tube in the center section. This will locate the safety chain brackets in the lowest point of the floor corrugation. Drop a U-bolt through each pair of holes from the topside of the truck bed floor, place a spring and lock nut on each of the four legs, and tighten the lock nuts until flush with the bottom of the U-bolts.
The installation sequence is: (1) Remove spare tire and heat shield; (2) Remove exhaust bracket; (3) Mark and cut 4-inch hole in truck bed floor; (4) Install crossmembers; (5) Install center section; (6) Install sideplates; (7) Install U-bolts on sideplates; (8) Install latch pin release handle; (9) Install safety chain brackets; (10) Replace exhaust bracket and spare tire. Each step has specific positioning and fastening requirements detailed in Steps One through Eleven.
Install the crossmembers by sliding them from inside the wheel well, above the tire, through the gap between the bed and the truck frame, and across until they span the frame rails. The 48-inch front crossmember is placed first between the truck frame and bed floor using the notch made in Step Three. Ensure the holes in the crossmember face the rear of the truck. Secure a 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch bolt into the second hole from the driver's side using the provided O-ring. Slide the crossmember forward to the front edge of the 4-inch hole. Next, install the 46 1/2-inch rear crossmember, rotating it a quarter turn so the threaded holes are offset to the bottom of the bar, and slide back until there is enough room for the center section.
Raise the center section into position between the crossmembers and carefully move it above the fuel tank from beneath the truck. The receiver socket must be positioned to the rear with the latch pin release arm on the driver's side. The round hitch receiver that protrudes from the top of the center section must fit through the 4-inch hole in the truck bed floor. Slide the front crossmember back against the center section so that the previously installed bolt goes into the center section hole directly across from it. Line up the rest of the holes and attach the two members with 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Insert 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch bolts with flat and lock washers through the rear leg of the center section into the threaded holes of the rear crossmember and hand tighten. An overhead lifting device is recommended to help position the center section.
The driver's sideplate is installed with the bent flange to the front and the large hole to the rear. Attach the two pieces of the sideplate together with 1/2-inch carriage bolts inserted into the square holes from the backside and fastened using a flat washer, lock washer, and nut on each bolt. Do not tighten at this time. Attach the flange on the sideplate to the front crossmember using a 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch bolt, flat washer, lock washer, and nut, with the nut on the front side of the crossmember. Attach the rear bar to the sideplate ear by threading a 1/2-inch by 1 1/2-inch bolt with flat and lock washer into the bar. Repeat on the passenger side. For 1999–2003 light-duty 1/2 and 3/4-ton trucks and 2004 light-duty 3/4-ton trucks, use the U-bolt placement holes at the rear of the sideplate; front placement holes are for standard 1/2-ton applications.
Install the 1/2-inch by 6 1/4-inch U-bolt from inside the frame through the holes in the sideplate above and below the frame, using a lock washer and nut on each end of the U-bolt. Repeat this procedure on the passenger side with the other sideplate. While installing the U-bolts around the frame, use caution not to damage or pinch the wiring harness or brake lines. Install the 3/4-inch by 2 1/2-inch bolt by placing a flat washer and frame insert on the bolt and installing it from inside the frame through the rear hole in the sideplate. The 3/4-inch bolt fastens with a lock washer and nut. The frame insert converts the slotted holes to a 3/4-inch round hole and will seat firmly when installed correctly.
Install the latch pin release handle by inserting it through the slot in the end of the center section on the driver's side of the truck. Align the handle eyelet with the square hole in the latch pin so the handle is in line with the latch pin. Secure the handle to the pin with the 5/16-inch by 3/4-inch carriage bolt and 5/16-inch locking flange nut. The included 5/16-inch cap screw can replace the carriage bolt if wrench access on the cab side of the handle is limited. Tighten the nut until it is secure. Do not over-tighten and deform the handle eyelet. The latch pin will not function properly if the handle is not installed correctly.
Tighten fasteners in this order: (1) Center section bolts to crossmembers: 80 ft-lb; (2) Ensure the hitch is square with the frame; (3) 3/4-inch sideplate bolts: 120 ft-lb; (4) Frame clamping U-bolts: 40 ft-lb (tighten slowly, alternating between top and bottom legs until equally tightened); (5) Three carriage bolts on each side: 60 ft-lb; (6) Sideplate to front and rear crossmembers: 80 ft-lb. For the safety chain bracket U-bolts, tighten the lock nuts until flush with the bottom of the U-bolts (specific ft-lb value not provided in manual).
Do not invert the ball in the socket when carrying heavy loads on 2-wheel-drive trucks. The ball may hit the top of the differential. Remove the ball from the socket before loading. A plug for the socket is available from B&W.
The tow vehicle's towing capacities should under no circumstances be exceeded. Ensure your vehicle's manufacturer-specified towing capacity is not surpassed when using the 1059R hitch.
After installation, verify that the hitch is square with the frame before final tightening of all fasteners. Ensure all fasteners are tightened to the specified torque values in the correct sequence: center section bolts (80 ft-lb), 3/4-inch sideplate bolts (120 ft-lb), frame clamping U-bolts (40 ft-lb), carriage bolts (60 ft-lb), and sideplate to crossmember bolts (80 ft-lb). Confirm that the latch pin release handle is installed correctly and functions properly. Verify that the exhaust bracket and spare tire have been replaced. Check that no fuel lines, brake lines, or electrical wires have been damaged during installation.
