The 4" hole allows the round hitch receiver tube that protrudes from the top of the center section to pass through the truck bed floor. This hole is critical to correct hitch installation and must be located precisely: 48 3/8" from the tailgate end on long beds (8' or longer), or 44 3/8" from the tailgate end on short beds (less than 8'). The hole must be centered between the wheel wells.
Yes. You must cut a 4" hole in the truck bed floor at a specific location (48 3/8" from the tailgate on long beds, 44 3/8" on short beds, centered between wheel wells). Additionally, you must drill four 1/2" holes through the bed floor for the safety chain U-bolt brackets, located under the low ribs of the bed. These holes are permanent modifications to the truck bed.
You may drill through both the bed and plastic bed liner, but the manual notes this is more difficult. It is harder to accurately locate the midpoint between the wheel wells and to ensure the bed liner does not move while sawing the 4" hole. Plan accordingly if your truck has a bed liner.
Before installation, carefully examine the location of fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wires along the frame rails where the hitch will be installed. Be certain you will not damage these components when positioning hitch parts, drilling holes, tightening fasteners, or lifting and lowering the truck bed. The installation sequence is: 1) Cut the 4" hole in the truck bed floor; 2) Install the rear and front crossmembers under the truck frame; 3) Raise the center section into position between the crossmembers and fasten it (do not fully tighten); 4) Install the sideplates and torque all fasteners to 90 ft. lbs. in order: center section to crossmembers first, then sideplates to frame rails, then sideplate flanges to crossmembers; 5) Install the latch pin release handle; 6) Install safety chain U-bolts; 7) Install the hitch ball.
From underneath the truck, position the rear crossmember across the top of the frame rails between the bed and frame, with slots facing the rear and the horizontal side of the angle at the top. Position the front crossmember across the top of the frame rails between the bed and frame, about 9" ahead of the rear crossmember. Both are installed by angling them over the rear end housing and exhaust pipe onto the passenger side frame rail until you clear the shock on the driver side.
On extended cab short bed trucks only, you may need to remove metal tabs from the bed located on the crossmember in the front part of the wheel opening before installing the sideplates. These tabs serve no vital purpose except for factory alignment during fabrication.
Insert the latch pin release handle through the slot in the end of the center section on the driver's side. Align the handle eyelet with the square hole in the latch pin so the handle is in line with the latch pin. Secure it with the 5/16" × 3/4" carriage bolt and 5/16" locking flange nut. Tighten until secure but do not over-tighten, as this can deform the handle eyelet. If wrench access on the cab side is limited, the included 5/16" cap screw can replace the carriage bolt.
The center section has multiple safety chain holes, but only 4 holes (2 on each side of the ball) need to be drilled. Examine the safety chain holes to identify which are under a low bed rib. Drill four 1/2" holes through the bed at these low rib locations. Drop a U-bolt through each pair of holes from the top of the bed. Place a conical spring and lock nut on each of the four U-bolt legs. Tighten the lock nuts until flush with the bottom of the U-bolts.
First, retract the latch pin handle by pulling it all the way out until it stops, then rotate it clockwise. Place the 2-5/16" ball in the hitch receiver. Engage the latch pin handle by rotating it counter-clockwise. Ensure the latch pin passes through the holes in the ball and fully engages through the hitch receiver. Remove the ball and grease the square base before final use.
All fasteners on the 1394R must be torqued to 90 ft. lbs. Torque in this order: 1) Center section to front and rear crossmembers; 2) Sideplates to frame rails on both sides; 3) Sideplate flanges to front and rear crossmembers on both sides. The safety chain U-bolt lock nuts are tightened until flush with the bottom of the U-bolts (not a specific torque value).
The mounting kit includes 1/2" × 1-1/2" cap screws (15 qty), 1/2" flat washers (21 qty), 1/2" lock washers (15 qty), and 1/2" finish nuts (9 qty). The center section fastens to crossmembers using 1/2" bolts with flat and lock washers. The latch pin handle is secured with a 5/16" × 3/4" carriage bolt and 5/16" locking flange nut (or optional 5/16" cap screw). Safety chain U-bolts are 1/2" with conical springs and lock nuts.
Do not invert the ball in the socket when carrying heavy loads on 2-wheel drive trucks. The ball may hit the top of the differential. Remove the ball from the socket before loading. A plug for the socket is available from B&W.
The tow vehicle's towing capacities should under no circumstances be exceeded. Refer to your vehicle's manufacturer specifications for the maximum towing capacity.
