The Model 1251R is designed for Toyota Tundra trucks from 2000 to 2006 in their original, unmodified condition. The hitch is not compatible with vehicles that have replacement parts or other modifications. Before purchasing, inspect your truck for any modifications to confirm fitment.
The 1251R can be installed on short-bed Tundras, but you must check for adequate turning clearance between the front of all your trailers and the truck cab before installing the hitch. Measure your trailer clearance to ensure it will not contact the cab during turns.
The kit includes two boxes: the Center Box (GNRC1250) containing the center section, 2-5/16" ball, latch pin handle, safety chain kit hardware (2× ½" U-bolts, 4× conical springs, 4× ½" lock nuts, and fasteners), and the Mounting Kit Box (GNRM1251) containing two side plates, front and rear crossmembers, and 12× ½" cap screws, 12× ½" flat washers, 12× ½" lock washers, 4× ¾" cap screws, 8× ¾" flat washers, 4× ¾" lock washers, and 4× ¾" finish nuts.
You will need a 4-inch hole saw or a saber saw equipped with a metal cutting blade to cut the hole in the truck bed floor. A tape measure is required for precise hole location. An overhead lifting device such as a chain fall, engine hoist, or cable come-a-long is recommended to help position the center section. Standard wrenches or sockets for ½" and ¾" fasteners are needed. A hammer is useful for removing the plastic clip holder from the driver's side frame rail.
Before installation, carefully examine the location of fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wires along the frame rails to ensure you will not damage them when positioning hitch components, drilling holes, tightening fasteners, or lifting and lowering the truck bed. Pay special attention to the fuel tank vent located on top of the gas tank, which can be easily damaged during installation. Verify that your truck is in its original, unmodified condition. On short-bed trucks, check for adequate turning clearance between the front of all trailers and the truck cab.
Measure from the back end (tailgate end) of the truck bed floor by hooking a tape measure over the back of the sheet metal and marking the floor at 46¼ inches. Center the measurement between the fender wheel wells. This location is critical to correct installation. If your truck has a plastic bed liner, you may drill through both, but it is more difficult to accurately locate the midpoint and ensure the bed liner does not move while sawing. Measure, mark, and saw carefully.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Verify and measure the correct 4-inch hole location in the truck bed floor at 46¼ inches from the tailgate, centered between wheel wells, and cut the hole. (2) Move the electrical wire harness by pulling plastic clips loose from the driver's side frame rail, then position the front and rear crossbars on top of the frame. (3) Raise the center section into position between the bed cross members from beneath the truck, aligning holes and fastening with ½" × 1½" bolts. (4) Install the side plates on the inside of the frame rails. (5) Drill four ½" holes through the truck bed floor for safety chain brackets and install U-bolts with springs and lock nuts. (6) Install the latch pin handle from underneath the truck. (7) Install the 2-5/16" ball in the hitch receiver and grease the square base.
The front crossbar has a notch machined at one end for clearance over a frame rivet. Position it with the drilled and tapped holes facing down and the notch toward the passenger side of the truck, placing it on top of the frame in front of the bed cross member and forward of the 4-inch hole. Position the rear crossbar above the frame behind the bed cross member and rearward of the 4-inch hole, also with the drilled and tapped holes facing down.
Raise the center section of the hitch into position between the cross members from beneath the truck. The round receiver tube that protrudes from the center section must fit through the 4-inch hole in the truck bed floor. If using an overhead lifting device, attach it to the latch pin through the receiver tube to help support the center section. Align the holes in the bars with the center section bridging bars, and fasten the center section to the cross bars using eight ½" × 1½" bolts with a lock washer on each. Use the overhead lifting device to apply upward pressure on the center section if necessary to aid alignment.
On the driver's side, remove the plastic clip holder from the frame by hitting the plastic stud from the outside with a hammer. Pull the brake lines away from the frame only far enough to slip the side plate in behind them. The side plates are bent to an angle shape with the wider side at the top and two slots in the top to align with and bolt to the holes in the cross bars. The driver's side plate has a large notch removed from the back end. Start ½" × 1½" bolts using a flat washer and lock washer on each into the bar through the top slots. Install ¾" × 2" bolts with a flat washer on each side, and a lock washer and nut, from the outside of the frame to the inside. Tighten all fasteners.
Drill four ½-inch holes through the truck bed floor from beneath the truck, through the four holes located near the round hitch receiver tube in the center section. From the topside of the truck floor, insert a U-bolt through each pair of holes. Place a spring and lock nut on each of the four legs. Tighten the lock nuts until ¼ inch of thread extends through the lock nut.
Install the handle from underneath the truck by inserting it through the slot in the end of the center section toward the driver's side rear tire. Attach the handle to the latch pin with the handle on the cab side of the square tab welded to the pin. The head of the bolt must be on the handle side, and the lock nut must be on the tab side. The tab is welded to the pin in an offset position so that the handle will be lined up over the center of the pin. If the handle is fastened to the other side of the tab, the handle will not function properly. When installed correctly, the latch pin may be disengaged from the ball by pulling on the handle from the driver's side wheel well and rotating the handle clockwise.
Retract the latch pin by pulling the handle out until it stops, then sliding it toward the front of the truck. Place the 2-5/16" ball in the hitch receiver. Engage the latch pin by pulling the handle and then sliding it rearward and back to the locking position. Be certain the latch pin passes through the holes in the 2-5/16" ball and engages completely through the hitch receiver socket. Grease the square base of the 2-5/16" ball on all sides.
