The B&W Turnoverball underbed gooseneck trailer hitch offers the best of both worlds. It provides a sturdy, dependable connection with your gooseneck trailer for towing, and when you're done, you can stow the ball upside down in the hitch for full bed access and a clean appearance.
The durable steel hitch ball included with the Turnoverball system secures in the hitch with a sturdy, 5/8" thick steel pin that is incorporated into the end of the operating handle. To lock the ball in place, drop it into the hitch hole in the bed of your truck. Then rotate the handle in your driver's-side wheel well counterclockwise until the latch engages. When the latch is engaged, the spring-loaded pin on the end of the handle will be inserted all the way through the base of the hitch ball, forming a strong, solid connection and ensuring absolute security when you're towing.
When you're done towing, remove the hitch ball by simply pulling the handle out as far as it will go and then rotating it clockwise until it unlatches. Remove the ball, flip it upside down, and drop it back into the ball hole of the hitch. Then reengage the latch to secure the stowed ball in place.
Unlike typical gooseneck balls - which have round bases - the Turnoverball hitch ball is designed with a square base. This makes latching the ball in the hitch easier because the base won't rotate inside of the hitch like a round base might, so lining the pin up is a snap. The base of the ball also fits tightly within the ball hole during storage. Because only the corners of the base contact the sides of the socket, any dirt or grime that gets into the hitch will fall through the socket, thus helping to prevent any buildup that could cause the ball to seize up in the hitch.
This hitch is custom designed for your vehicle. The included mounting brackets bolt to existing holes in your truck's frame. While some modification is required - you will need to cut a 3-1/2" diameter hole in your bed for the hitch ball and drill holes for the built-in safety chain loops - there is no need to weld onto or to drill into your frame.
Once you have the hitch brackets and body installed, set up the operating handle. This handle is designed to be accessed from the rear driver's-side wheel well. On the end of the handle is the heavy-duty steel pin that secures the hitch ball.
B&W makes it easy to tow just about anything. With the many adapters and accessories available, the Turnoverball can be made to work with almost any gooseneck trailer. Hitch balls are available that have a built-in rise, an offset, and even a different connection type. The model 1384 is a gooseneck hitch designed for 2014–2018 Ram 2500 trucks. The model 1384 comes equipped with a 2–5/16" ball. Trailers must have a 2–5/16" coupler. Towing with a larger coupler could cause loss of attachment between the trailer and the tow vehicle.
Yes. Cab clearance on short bed trucks is very limited when towing certain trailers. Before towing, you must measure the clearance between the 2–5/16" ball location and the cab, and compare it to the distance from the center of the trailer's coupler to its farthest forward corner point. The manual provides a calculation method: measure the distance from the rear edge of the frame cross member to the end of the bed (Length A), measure the bed length from rear to front (Length B), then calculate B − A − 8¼". Failure to ensure adequate clearance may result in significant property damage or serious injury.
Removing the spare tire is optional. Following the vehicle manufacturer's instructions, you may remove the spare tire to provide easier access to the area where the hitch will be installed.
Removing the heat shield is optional. If present, you may remove the bolts connecting the heat shield to the frame and set it aside. You will reinstall it after the hitch installation is complete.
Lifting the vehicle is optional but recommended. Installation requires the installer to work under the truck bed in the area of the rear axle. Soap and water are also needed for exhaust hanger re-attachment.
Disconnecting the exhaust hanger is optional but recommended. Locating the exhaust hanger in the rear passenger portion of the truck and disconnecting the exhaust provides improved mounting access to the center section. A pry bar can aid in disconnecting the exhaust hanger. You will re-attach it after installation.
Some vehicles have plastic liners inside the rear wheel wells. If the liner in the driver side wheel well prevents access to the opening between the bed and the frame just over the axle, it may need to be removed or cut to install the handle. If removed for installation, you will reinstall it after the hitch is complete.
Yes. You must drill a 3–1/2" diameter hole in the truck bed floor and four 1/2" holes for the safety chain U-bolts. First, use the hole template to mark the center location, drill a 1/4" pilot hole, then use a 3–1/2" hole saw from the top of the bed to create the main hole. For the U-bolts, use the Safety Chain U-bolt Guide to mark four hole locations and drill each with a 1/2" bit, drilling perpendicular to the bed surface. Remove any burrs created while cutting.
You must drill a 3–1/2" diameter hole in the truck bed floor. This hole allows the round portion of the hitch to pass through the bed. The 3–1/2" hole will leave a gap around the hitch structure, which is filled by the plastic spacer block.

It is possible to drill the holes from under the bed if necessary.

With the latch pin mechanism on the driver's side, raise the center section into place at an angle over the exhaust to clear structures under the truck bed. Then position it directly under the frame cross member so that the raised portion can be pushed straight up through the hole in the frame cross member and through the hole in the plastic spacer block. Having assistance in the bed to guide the top of the center section is recommended. Line the four holes in the center section up with the frame holes and the holes in the fastener handles.
Locate the latch pin handle and the latch pin handle bracket. Assemble the pieces with two 3/8" carriage bolts and 3/8" locking flange nuts, making sure that the edge of the handle is in line with the edge of the bracket. Torque the nuts to 30 ft-lbs.
First, move any wiring that may come into contact with the handle by pulling it down beside the frame inside the truck; use a wire tie if needed to keep it out of the way. Then, beginning under the vehicle, "thread" the end of the handle in front of the brake lines and over the frame on the driver side. Attach the handle to the latching mechanism over the 3/8" carriage bolts with two 3/8" locking flange nuts. Be sure the handle is in the proper position and does not interfere with any other vehicle components. Torque the nuts to 30 ft-lbs. The handle must be positioned on the "cab side" of the brake lines directly over the axle.
Use the Safety Chain U-bolt Guide to mark the four 1384 hole locations in the truck bed. From the top of the bed, drill each hole with a 1/2" drill bit, perpendicular to the surface. From the top side of the truck bed, drop a U-bolt in each set of holes. Place a conical spring over each leg of the U-bolts and secure with a 1/2" lock nut. Tighten the lock nut until the nut is flush with the end of the U-bolt.
The 5/8" flange head bolts that secure the center section to the frame cross member must be torqued to 150 ft-lbs. Ensure the hitch is square and firmly pressed against the frame cross member before tightening.
The 3/8" locking flange nuts that secure the latch pin handle to the latching mechanism must be torqued to 30 ft-lbs. This applies both to the nuts that attach the handle bracket to the handle assembly and to the nuts that attach the assembled handle to the latching mechanism.
Tighten the 1/2" lock nut until the nut is flush with the end of the U-bolt. The manual does not provide a specific torque value in foot-pounds.
Using a tape measure, ensure that the full length of the gooseneck hitch is centered within the channel of the frame cross member. Do this by making sure that the gap between the center section and the frame cross member is the same on the driver and passenger sides. The hitch must not be touching the brake lines that are anchored to the frame cross member.
Before towing, you must: (1) Lubricate the 2–5/16" ball by applying a light coating of grease to the corners on the square shank; (2) Check latch pin engagement by removing the ball, pushing the handle toward the rear of the truck until the latch pin engages, and visually inspecting the ball socket to verify the latch pin has passed completely through both walls; (3) Make a mark on the latching mechanism to show where it should be when the pin is correctly positioned; (4) Retract the pin, replace the ball, and re-engage the pin, then check that the marked location matches; (5) Re-read all warnings on the front page of the instructions.
Apply a light coating of grease to the corners on the square shank of the 2–5/16" ball. Re-apply lubricant as often as needed during use.
A serious injury can occur due to the pinch point located at the intersection of the latching mechanism and the center section. Avoid placing hands or fingers in this area during installation or operation.
Operating the tow vehicle while the latch is in the open position may allow the handle to come into contact with the rear tire. This may damage the tire or the handle and could lead to serious injury or death. The latch should only be put in the open position when inverting the 2–5/16" ball or installing a B&W towing accessory.

If the truck's suspension has a stabilizer between the top of the differential housing and the frame, the stowed ball could hit the member, damaging the truck's suspension. In such cases, the ball should NOT be turned over and stowed in the socket. Inspect your truck's suspension before attempting to stow the ball.
A visual inspection of the hitch should be performed before each time you tow. Regularly check that all pinned connections are secure, and that all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification. Check for cracks or damage to the hitch. Do not tow with the hitch if cracks or damage outside of normal wear is found. Make a mark on the latching mechanism to show where it should be when the pin is correctly positioned. Retract the pin, replace the ball, and re-engage the pin. Check the marked location on the latching mechanism. If the mark is in the same location as when it was made, then the latch pin has gone completely through the ball socket.
Do not exceed the tow or tongue rating of the coupler, tow or tongue rating of the hitch, or tow or weight ratings of the truck or trailer. Additional caution must be used when towing a wedge car trailer. Towing stability greatly depends on keeping the center of gravity as low as possible. Load heavy cars over the axles. Never tow with a single car on the front of the trailer. When towing a wedge car trailer, never exceed speeds that are reasonable for the roadway conditions (e.g., turns, going around a curve, etc.). Failure to account for proper trailer center of gravity and speeds that are reasonable for the roadway conditions may cause damage to the truck, trailer, towing components, and loss of attachment between the truck and trailer.

Ensure the handle is in the proper position and does not interfere with any other vehicle components. Do not operate the tow vehicle with the latch in the open position, as this may allow the handle to contact the rear tire.
Move the wiring harness by pulling it down beside the frame inside the truck. In some cases, fasteners may be present that will need to be pulled out of the frame. A wire tie may need to be used to keep the wire down out of the way of the handle. When correctly installed, no moving part of the handle should rub on any wires in your truck.
Using a tape measure, ensure that the gap between the center section and the frame cross member is the same on the driver and passenger sides. If the gaps are unequal, loosen the 5/8" bolts slightly and reposition the hitch to center it. Ensure the hitch is not touching the brake lines anchored to the frame cross member. Once centered, retighten the bolts to 150 ft-lbs.
