Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The grille, fascia, and metal bumper must be removed during installation and reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted. The tow hook on the passenger's side will be removed and not reinstalled. All other removed components are reinstalled unless otherwise noted in the instructions.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill a 17/32" hole into the side of the frame rail on both sides (step 14) and a 1-1/4" hole saw hole into the driver's side frame for nut plate access (step 13). A 1-1/4" hole saw and 17/32" drill bit are required tools.
Yes. Trimming of the fascia and shroud is required. For older models, you must trim the lower fascia piece where the tow hooks come through on the driver's side, cutting out the lip and circle, then continuing to trim an additional 1-1/2" straight down and next to the opening. For newer models, trim the recessed area on the driver's side of the shroud to match the passenger side.
Yes. Using a vise grip, you must bend the frame support approximately 1/2" up from the bottom, back and forth until it snaps off on both the front and back supports on both sides. On 2011-12 models only, you must also snap off the area in front of the supports for additional baseplate clearance on both sides.
Yes. The manual recommends using a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. This is important for protecting the frame from corrosion after drilling and trimming.
The 1/2"-13 hex bolts are Grade 5 and should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.

The BX1843 baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed your vehicle's GVWR.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1843 kit includes two class III safety cables. These cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not rub against hoses or moving parts. Safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables should be attached to the provided convenience link on the baseplate and secured to a solid piece of the frame. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines, as this could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts. Additional mounting options may interfere with suggested mounting; in such cases, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure that Loctite Red has been used on all bolts and that they are tightened to the recommended torque specifications. This regular inspection is the owner's responsibility and is critical for safe towing.
Yes. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use. This helps protect the baseplate and attachment points when the vehicle is not being towed.

No. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, you must use a replacement bolt of the same grade as the original. In most cases, this will be Grade 5. Using non-matching bolts could compromise the safety and integrity of the baseplate. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor. Failing to use the correct grade bolts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Handling of some cosmetic parts when installing the BX1843 may require the use of protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage. Take care to protect the grille, fascia, and bumper during removal and reinstallation.
