Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.

Install the tow bar and safety cables per their instructions.

The baseplate uses three bolt sizes: 1/2-13 x 1-1/2 Grade 5 bolts (qty. 2), 1/2-13 x 1 Grade 5 bolts (qty. 2), and 7/16-14 x 1-1/2 Grade 5 bolts (qty. 2). These are paired with 1/2-13 nuts, 7/16-14 nuts, 1/2 lock washers, and 7/16 lock washers. On 4WD models, one location has a nut already welded to the mount assembly.
Lock washers are placed differently depending on location. For the 7/16-14 x 1-1/2 bolts connecting the mount assemblies to the cross angle, place the lock washer on the bolt before beginning assembly. For all other bolt locations, place the lock washer just ahead of the nut. On 4WD models where a nut is already welded to the mount assembly, place the lock washer on the bolt before assembly.
2WD models use eight bolts and attach to the front suspension strut mounts. 4WD models use six bolts and attach to the skid plate. The mount plate assemblies are different for each (parts 61-3579/61-3580 for 2WD, 61-3581/61-3582 for 4WD). On 4WD, the skid plate must be bent or notched to clear the mount assembly tabs. The cross angle and most fasteners are the same for both.
The two slots at the front of the cross angle should align to the lower bumper bracket bolts just below the edge of the lower trim panel. The two horizontal holes at the sides should align to the small holes on the tie-down brackets, which are above and behind the suspension attachment holes. The manual includes sketches showing correct part position for reference.
