Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the BX1957 is designed for the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. Installation differs depending on whether your truck has factory tow hooks. Vehicles with tow hooks use existing bolts and nutplates; vehicles without tow hooks require removal of a plastic trim piece and use of 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts. No drilling or fascia trimming is necessary.
The kit includes the baseplate weldment (61-5887), six 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts (Grade 5, zinc-plated), six 1/2-13 hex nuts, six 1/2 lock washers, two 4-way connector adapters, fasteners for the adapters, two 36-inch Class IV baseplate safety cables, and four 1/2-inch quicklinks. The tow bar and its safety cables are not included and must be ordered separately.
You will need a 15MM socket, a 3/4-inch socket, and Loctite Red. A file may also be useful, as the manual notes that it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear, depending on dimensional variations between vehicles.

1. Remove the six 15MM bolts that secure the tow hooks. 2. Apply Loctite Red to the existing metric bolts. 3. Fasten the baseplate to the truck using the existing bolts and nutplates. 4. Tighten and torque all bolts according to the chart on the General Instruction Sheet. 5. Install the tow bar and safety cables per their package instructions.
1. Remove the plastic trim piece from the front of the vehicle. 2. Apply Loctite Red to six 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts. 3. Bolt the baseplate to the existing holes in the frame using the hex bolts, lockwashers, and hex nuts (items 2, 3, and 4 from the parts list). 4. Tighten and torque all bolts according to the chart on the General Instruction Sheet. 5. Install the tow bar and safety cables per their package instructions.
The attachment tabs are 24 inches center to center and have a height of 23 1/2 inches.
Torque specifications are provided on the General Instruction Sheet, which is not included in this installation manual. Contact your Blue Ox dealer or distributor for the torque chart, or visit www.blueox.com. All bolts must be treated with Loctite Red before tightening.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. If a bolt does not clear a hole, it may be necessary to file the hole slightly to allow proper alignment. This is a minor adjustment and does not constitute a major modification.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. The kit includes two 36-inch Class IV safety cables. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and are not a replacement for, legally required safety cables that attach the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
