Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Required tools include: 7MM socket, 10MM socket/wrench, 9/16" socket, large vise grips, drill, flat screwdriver, utility knife, pliers, tape measure, 1 1/4" hole saw, 13/32" drill bit, and Loctite RED.
The front fascia, plastic bumper cover, air baffle, and washer reservoir are removed and replaced during installation. These parts are removed to access the mounting points and are reinstalled after the baseplate is secured.
Yes, drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, you must drill three holes on each side of the vehicle. Using a 1 1/4" hole saw, you must drill a hole so that nut plates may be inserted into the frame on each side. The bumper cover, fascia, air baffle, and washer reservoir must also be trimmed.
On the bottom side of the plastic bumper cover, using a utility knife, notch out the corner by going over 1 inch, then up, across and back. This must be done to both sides. Additionally, on the back side of the fascia, cut out the first long top rib using a utility knife on both sides.
For Grade 5 3/8-16 bolts, the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. For Grade 8 3/8-16 bolts, the torque specification is 47 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
For Grade 8.8 6MM bolts, the torque specification is 6 foot-pounds. For Grade 10.9 6MM bolts, the torque specification is 8 foot-pounds. These bolts are used for the washer reservoir and must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
The kit includes: one weld mount (61-6705), two weld nut plates (61-5208), six spacer tubes 3/4" x .406" ID x 1" (107-2683), four 3/8-16 x 2" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0444), two 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0440), six 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), four 3/8-16 hex nylon insert lock nuts (202-0090), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two 10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws (201-0192), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), two removable attachment tab assemblies (62-3469), two 6MM-1.00 x 45MM hex bolts Grade 8.8, two 1/4" flat washers (203-0001), two 6MM lock washers (203-0161), two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and two receiver cap plugs (290-0437).
On the driver side, the front hole uses a 3/8-16 x 2" hex bolt with a 1" spacer tube between the baseplate and frame, plus a 3/8" lock washer and 3/8-16 hex nut. The back holes use 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" hex bolts. The bottom back hole has a 3/8" lock washer with 3/8-16 hex nut. The top back hole has a 3/8" lock washer on this side and a 3/8-16 nut plate inserted into the drilled hole. Loctite RED must be used on all bolts.
On the passenger side, all holes use 3/8-16 x 2" hex bolts with 1" spacer tubes placed between the baseplate and frame for each hole. The front hole and bottom back hole have 3/8" lock washers with 3/8-16 hex nuts. The top back hole has a 3/8" lock washer on this side and a 3/8-16 nut plate inserted into the drilled hole. Loctite RED must be used on all bolts.
The permanent baseplate safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system. The two cables together must meet the weight rating requirement. These cables are strongly recommended and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation mounts the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2010 Mercury Milan with the BX2616 baseplate.
All electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia. This ensures that the wiring system is working correctly before the vehicle is reassembled.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not used again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty. If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not used again.

Yes. You must drill three holes per side with a 13/32" bit and one hole per side with a 1 1/4" hole saw. The bumper cover, fascia, air baffle, and washer reservoir must be trimmed.
Required tools: 7MM and 10MM sockets, 9/16" socket, drill, 1 1/4" hole saw, 13/32" drill bit, utility knife, flat screwdriver, pliers, tape measure, large vise grips, and Loctite RED.

Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the baseplate connection fails. They must remain installed as long as the baseplate is on the vehicle and are not a replacement for legally required safety cables.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2010 Mercury Milan with the BX2616 baseplate.
Before each towing trip, inspect for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Tighten all bolts to specification using Loctite RED. Keep permanent baseplate safety cables installed and check they do not rub against hoses or moving parts.
The baseplate must be replaced and not used again. Accident damage can be unseen and using a damaged baseplate could cause more damage or serious injury.
On the driver side, the plate is bent. You may need to pull it out a little to get by the ridge. Be sure the baseplate is level with respect to the vehicle frame. The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for auto manufacturer's tolerances. These minor adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates.
If additional options interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
