Connect to your lifestyle with a custom hitch receiver from CURT. All of our custom hitches are designed for a vehicle-specific fit, manufactured with pride, finished for industry-leading rust resistance and tested to rigorous SAE J684 standards for safety. This class 1 trailer hitch and ball mount combination is designed for a custom fit on select years of the BMW 535 and 550 (see application info to verify fitment). The hitch integrates with the vehicle's frame and provides a useful and dependable 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver. The receiver is perfect for attaching the included ball mount and towing a small trailer, or for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted cargo carrier, bike rack or other accessory. This particular class 1 hitch is rated for 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 200 pounds tongue weight (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). The ball mount included with this trailer hitch quickly and easily installs into the hitch receiver and has a 3/4" trailer ball hole (trailer ball not included). It can be mounted in the rise or drop position to promote level towing. Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 1 hitch is protected with our co-cured finishing process. It is descaled for a smooth surface, immersed in liquid A-coat for rust resistance inside and out, covered with a durable black powder coat and finally co-cured for an industry-leading rust, chip and UV-resistant shield. No matter where you're headed or which season of the year you?re towing in, this CURT hitch is equipped for long-lasting resilience to the elements. It features an open-back receiver for easy cleaning, and it comes with all the hardware necessary for the installation.

Required tools include: ratchet with 6" extension, torque wrench, 3/4" and 13mm sockets, 10mm and 11mm sockets, power drill with 17/32" drill bit, silicone caulk, plastic rivet removal tool, tin snips or aviation shears, masking tape, and safety goggles.
Yes. You must remove the underbody panel that attaches the bumper cover to the trunk pan using a 10mm socket and plastic rivet remover. Save it for reinstallation after drilling and final assembly. The panel will need to be trimmed as required before reinstalling.
Yes. Before drilling, you must clear the trunk pan of all contents and slide the battery towards the rear of the vehicle. After drilling and final assembly, slide the battery back into position and reinstall carpet and trunk contents.
Two people may be required to ease installation. However, the manual does not specify whether a second person is mandatory or optional.
Yes. You must drill two holes in the trunk pan using a 17/32" drill bit (sized for 1/2" fasteners). The holes are marked using the tail bracket as a template, and drilling is done from below the vehicle. This is a permanent modification.
A 17/32" drill bit is required. This bit size is specified for the 1/2" fasteners that secure the tail bracket to the trunk pan.
Yes. After drilling and final assembly, you must trim the underbody panel as required before reinstalling it onto the vehicle. Tin snips or aviation shears are provided in the required tools list for this purpose.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. This applies to the carriage bolts and hex flange nuts used throughout the installation.
The kit includes: (4) 1/2-13 x 1 1/4" carriage bolts Grade 8, (2) 1/2-13 x 2" carriage bolts Grade 8, (6) HFN 1213 Grade 8 hex flange nuts, (2) CM-SP6 spacers (.250 x 1.00 x 3.00" square hole), (2) CM-SP4 spacers (.250 x 1.50 x 3.00" square hole), (2) CM-SP55 spacers (.375 x 1.25 x 2.50" round hole), (2) 1/2" fishwire, and (1) 11381-TB tail bracket.
Fishwire is used to thread the initial carriage bolts and spacers into the existing holes in the bumper beam. Two 1/2" fishwires are included to help guide the (2) 1/2-13 x 1 1/4" carriage bolts and (2) CM-SP6 spacers into position before raising the hitch and installing the hex flange nuts.
Fishwire (2) 1/2-13 x 1 1/4" carriage bolts and (2) CM-SP6 spacers into the existing holes in the bumper beam. Raise the hitch into position and loosely install the 1/2" hex flange nuts. These fasteners remain loose until final torquing in step 6.
The tail bracket (part 11381-TB) is temporarily installed to the hitch to serve as a template for marking the required drill holes in the trunk pan. After drilling, the tail bracket is reinstalled using (2) 1/2-13 x 1 1/4" carriage bolts and 1/2" hex flange nuts.
Silicone caulk must be applied to the CM-SP4 spacers and the remaining 1/2" carriage bolts before installing them into the trunk pan and tail bracket. This is done in step 5, before loosely installing the remaining 1/2" hex flange nuts.
1. Remove underbody panel using 10mm socket and rivet removal tool. 2. Fishwire initial carriage bolts and spacers into bumper beam holes, raise hitch, loosely install nuts. 3. Temporarily install tail bracket and mark trunk pan drill holes. 4. Remove tail bracket, drill holes from below using 17/32" bit, reinstall tail bracket with bolts and nuts. 5. Apply silicone caulk to spacers and bolts, install into trunk pan and tail bracket, loosely install nuts. 6. Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft, trim underbody panel, reinstall it, restore battery and trunk contents.
You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Although the hitch is rated for 2,000 lbs trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight, your BMW's manufacturer specifications may be lower and must be followed.
Yes. Curt recommends the use of 18050 stabilizing straps for all non-trailer (wheel-less) loads. All non-trailer loads applied to this hitch must be supported by these straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.
Safety glasses or safety goggles must be worn at all times while installing this product.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a retorque interval or inspection schedule beyond this general recommendation.
Professional installation time is 60 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation time is 120 minutes.
The installation is rated as moderate difficulty. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
