A CURT trailer hitch is the key to pursuing your passions, whether you're taking the family boat out for an afternoon on the water or packing up the mountain bikes for a day on the trails. This CURT class 2 hitch is perfect for towing a small trailer, such as a boat trailer, lightweight camper or utility trailer. It can also be used to mount a hitch cargo carrier or bike rack (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 2 trailer hitch is made for a vehicle-specific fit. It is engineered to seamlessly integrate with select years of the Mazda CX-5 (see application info to verify fitment). It is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. It is also equipped with 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hitch receiver to accept the included ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this hitch kit has a 3/4" trailer ball hole and can be positioned in the drop or rise orientation for level towing with your specific trailer (trailer ball not included). Like all CURT custom receiver hitches, this class 2 hitch is designed, manufactured, finished and tested with the utmost care. It is engineered for a precise fit, easy installation, maximum towing strength and an integrated look on the vehicle. It is also tested to SAE J684 protocols for safety. This class 2 trailer hitch is finished with our industry-leading dual-coat process for unparalleled rust, chip and UV resistance. It is descaled for a smooth surface, submersed in liquid A-coat for rust prevention inside and out, covered with a highly durable powder coat, and finally co-cured for a dependable shield against the elements. This class 2 hitch comes with a ball mount, hitch pin and mounting hardware for a complete installation.

Yes, CURT part number 12170 is designed for 2013 and later Mazda CX-5 Crossover models. Always verify your vehicle matches the specifications before purchase.
The CURT 12170 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 350 lbs when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower. Check your vehicle's owner manual for the final towing limit.
Required tools: torque wrench, 3/4" and 19mm sockets, ratchet, flathead screwdriver, pliers, pry bar, masking tape, and safety glasses. Using proper tools will greatly improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: 3× M12-1.25×40 hex bolts, 3× 1/2" conical toothed washers (FW12), 4× FW12 flat washers, 2× 1/2"-13×1.5" carriage bolts, 2× CM-SP12 square hole spacers (0.250×1.00×2.00"), 2× HFN 1213 Grade 8 hex flange nuts, 2× 1/2" fishwire, and 2× 3/16"×8" 50# UV black cable ties (part 600043).
No, drilling is not required. The hitch uses existing weld nuts in the frame rails. The installation uses the fishwire technique to route hardware through existing access holes.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Yes, if a plastic underbody panel is present under the rear bumper, it must be removed. Remove the two plastic fasteners using a flathead screwdriver. Return the panel and fasteners to the vehicle owner after installation.
Yes, the exhaust must be temporarily lowered. Remove two to four of the rearmost rubber hangers (the exact number depends on your vehicle). Leave the rubber hangers attached to the vehicle; do not remove them completely.
The fishwire technique is used to route the 1/2" carriage bolts with CM-SP12 spacers through the frame rail access holes. Thread the fishwire through the access hole and out the rearmost mounting location in the frame rail. Leave the hardware fully inside the frame rail with the fishwire attached. Later, thread the fishwire through the hitch mounting holes, then pull the hardware into position and remove the fishwire. This allows you to position the hitch without fully inserting bolts beforehand.
The tooth side of the conical toothed washers must be against the hitch. The 1/2" flat washers should be clamped in position between the hitch and the frame rail.
After pulling the 1/2" hardware into position and removing the fishwire, re-secure the electrical harness that was unfastened in step 3. Wrap the cable ties around the hitch mounting plate(s) and harness, pull tight, and trim any excess cable tie.
Torque all M12 hardware to 86.2 ft-lbs and all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper fastener tension.
All M12 bolts (M12-1.25×40 hex bolts) must be torqued to 86.2 ft-lbs.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs.
Yes, to ease installation, tape four 1/2" flat washers into position on the inside of the hitch side plates before beginning the fishwire process. This helps hold them in place during assembly.
Yes, remove the tape on the side of the vehicle frame rails to expose the mounting locations. Also trim any excess seam seal if it will interfere with the hitch.
Remove any plastic insert (if present) and/or electrical harness clip between the hitch mounting locations on the passenger side frame rail. On the driver side frame rail, unfasten the electrical harness clip on the outside and follow the harness to unfasten the nearest clip towards the center of the vehicle. These will be re-secured after the hitch is positioned.
Thread the fishwire through the rearmost hitch mounting holes. Pull the bumper fascia rearward and the exhaust downward to get the hitch into position. This creates the clearance needed to align the hitch with the frame rail mounting points.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This maintenance is critical for safe towing operation.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Before you begin installation, read all instructions thoroughly. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. While the CURT 12170 is rated for 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight, your vehicle's manufacturer may specify a lower limit. Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's towing capacity as the final authority.
