A CURT trailer hitch is the key to pursuing your passions, whether you're taking the family boat out for an afternoon on the water or packing up the mountain bikes for a day on the trails. This CURT class 2 hitch is perfect for towing a small trailer, such as a boat trailer, lightweight camper or utility trailer. It can also be used to mount a hitch cargo carrier or bike rack (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 2 trailer hitch is made for a vehicle-specific fit. It is engineered to seamlessly integrate with select years of the Jeep Compass (see application info to verify fitment). It is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. It is also equipped with 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hitch receiver to accept the included ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this hitch kit has a 3/4" trailer ball hole and can be positioned in the drop or rise orientation for level towing with your specific trailer (trailer ball not included). Like all CURT custom receiver hitches, this class 2 hitch is designed, manufactured, finished and tested with the utmost care. It is engineered for a precise fit, easy installation, maximum towing strength and an integrated look on the vehicle. It is also tested to SAE J684 protocols for safety. This class 2 trailer hitch is finished with our industry-leading dual-coat process for unparalleled rust, chip and UV resistance. It is descaled for a smooth surface, submersed in liquid A-coat for rust prevention inside and out, covered with a highly durable powder coat, and finally co-cured for a dependable shield against the elements. This class 2 hitch comes with a ball mount, hitch pin and mounting hardware for a complete installation.

Yes, CURT hitch 12174 is designed for 2017.5-Present Jeep Compass SUV models. Before purchasing, verify your vehicle year matches 2017.5 or later. If your Compass is equipped with a tow hook, the installation process is simplified and follows a different sequence (steps 5, 6, 8, and 9 only).
Yes. Tow hook equipped Compass models use a simplified installation. Remove the (6) 14mm hex bolts from the vehicle frame and use them to attach the hitch. Then follow installation steps 5, 6, 8, and 9 only, skipping the exhaust and heat shield removal steps.
The hitch is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 350 lbs. You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The hitch is designed as a weight-carrying hitch.
The hitch is designed for use with CURT ball mount #45521 (Euro mount). Optional ball mount sizes are available: #45571 (1 7/8" ball) and #45572 (2" ball). These are sold separately.
Required tools are: T30 Torq bit, 13mm socket, 15mm socket, 3/4" socket, 6" socket extension, ratchet, torque wrench, pliers, die grinder, aviation shears or tin snips, tape measure, masking tape, marker, and safety glasses. A 14mm socket is also needed for tow hook equipped models.
The kit includes: (6) CM-SP10 square hole spacers (.250 x 1.00 x 2.50"), (6) 1/2-13 x 1 3/4" Grade 8 carriage bolts, (6) HFN 1213 Grade 8 hex flange nuts, (6) 1/2" fishwires, and (2) M8-1.25 x 45 tap bolts. The tap bolts replace factory exhaust hanger hardware.
Temporarily removing the exhaust will ease installation. The manual recommends loosening the nut at the bolted connection in the middle of the vehicle with a 15mm socket. You must support the exhaust before removing the hanger nuts to prevent damage. The exhaust is reinstalled in the final steps.
Yes. Use a 13mm socket to remove the (3) sheet metal nuts holding the heat shield in position. Remove the heat shield and trim the exhaust attachment tabs from it. The heat shield center is then reinstalled on the vehicle.
Yes. You must trim the lower bumper cover. Using tape, a marker, and measuring tape, locate the center of the vehicle and mark a 2 1/2" side to side and 2 5/8" lengthwise cutout. Use aviation shears or tin snips to trim out the marked area. The manual notes these dimensions are reference only—verify hitch location on your vehicle before trimming.
No drilling is required. However, you must use a die grinder to enlarge the rearward most holes in the bottom of the frame to allow the supplied carriage bolts and spacers to pass through. This is a permanent modification to the frame.
Using pliers, bend the (2) small locator tabs flat on each exhaust bracket or remove them entirely. Then reinstall the exhaust hanger and replace the factory hardware with an M8 tap bolt on each side.
Torque all 1/2" fasteners (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) to 110 lb-ft. Torque all M14 fasteners to 126 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to achieve these specifications.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The installation is rated as challenging difficulty level. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, CURT recommends contacting an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
1. Remove bumper fascia screws (save for reinstallation). 2. Remove and support exhaust hanger nuts. 3. Remove heat shield and trim tabs. 4. Enlarge frame holes with die grinder and fishwire carriage bolts and spacers. 5. Mark and trim bumper cover cutout. 6. Modify exhaust brackets and install tap bolts. 7. Raise hitch into position using fishwires, pulling rear bumper down +5". 8. Torque all fasteners. 9. Reinstall exhaust and bumper cover screws. For tow hook models, skip steps 2-3 and use existing 14mm bolts.
Thread fishwires into the hitch mounting holes and raise the hitch into mounting position with the main body on the rearward side of the bumper fascia body mounts. Pull downward on the rear bumper cover approximately 5" to accomplish getting the hitch in position. Remove the fishwires and install the (6) 1/2" hex flange nuts.
Wear safety glasses at all times while installing this product. Support the exhaust before removing the hanger nuts to prevent damage. Use proper tools to improve installation quality and reduce time. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning.
