Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Jeep Cherokee XJ (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 6,000 lbs. WD and 600 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

When towing a trailer, you may also need a properly rated trailer ball, hitch pin, wiring harness, brake controller or weight distribution system.
CURT trailer hitches feature a durable black finish designed to help protect against rust, scratches and exposure to road conditions. Many models install using existing holes in the vehicle frame, although drilling, trimming or temporary removal of vehicle components may be required for certain applications.
Use our vehicle fitment tools to find the correct CURT 2" trailer hitch for your year, make and model. Always compare the hitch rating with your vehicle’s towing capacity and the ratings of every component in your towing setup. The maximum towing capacity is determined by the lowest-rated component.

Curt part number 13160 is designed for 1984–2001 Jeep Cherokee (Downsize). However, installation steps vary by model year and vehicle configuration (skid shield type, tow hook bracket presence). Verify your specific year and configuration before purchasing, as the manual notes that installation will vary for different model years.
Bumper removal is not required but is optional. The manual states that removal of the bumper may ease the fishwiring process, which is only necessary for vehicles not equipped with a frame-mounted closed-sided steel skid shield or frame-mounted tow hook bracket. If your vehicle has one of these features, bumper removal is not needed.
No, drilling is not required. The manual explicitly states 'NO DRILLING REQUIRED' and uses existing frame holes for fastener installation.
Remove all but a thin layer of undercoating from the attaching surfaces. Grind or chisel off any small aluminum rivet heads present on the attaching surface. This ensures the side brackets will sit flat against the frame.
For vehicles with a frame-mounted, closed-sided, steel skid shield: (1) Remove the rear skid shield mounting bolt and loosen the forward skid shield mounting bolt on each side so the skid shield lowers about 1/4". Do not remove the forward mounting bolt or the skid shield will come off. (2) Raise the hitch into position, placing the receiver flange between the frame and skid shield. (3) Install four M12 bolts and conical washers on each side. (4) Remove the forward skid shield mounting bolts, place two 1/2" flat washers as spacers between the frame and skid shield, and reinstall the existing M12 fastener.
For vehicles equipped with a frame-mounted tow hook bracket on the driver's side: (1) Remove the tow hook and the tow hook bracket. (2) Mount the driver and passenger sides as shown in the diagram.
For vehicles not equipped with a frame-mounted closed-sided steel skid shield or frame-mounted tow hook bracket: (1) Fishwire the square hole spacers, round spacers, and 1/2" × 1¾" carriage bolts through the end of the frame and into existing holes. (2) Leave the fishwires attached to the carriage bolts until the 1/2" flange nuts are installed. This allows the bolts to be pulled through the receiver after it has been positioned around the fuel tank. Removal of the bumper may ease the fishwiring process.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 lb.-ft.
All M12 fasteners must be torqued to 79 lb.-ft.
The kit includes: one 1/2" fishwire, four 1/2" flat washers (part 30-00133), two 1/2"-13 UNC × 1¾" grade 8 hex head cap screws (part 10-10370), eight 1/2"-13 UNC grade 8 serrated flange nuts (part 20-00062), two 0.250" × 1.38" × 1.50" round hole spacers (part CM-SP25), six 0.250" × 1.50" × 2.00" square hole spacers (part CM-SP1), eight M12 × 1.75 × 40 mm class 10.9 hex head cap screws (part 10-10386), eight 1/2" S-con washers (part 30-00149), and six 1/2"-13 UNC × 1¾" grade 8 carriage bolts (part 10-10272).
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a maintenance interval; consult Curt Manufacturing for recommended inspection frequency.
Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The manual states that the hitch has a gross load capacity, but the specific values are not provided on this page. Contact Curt Manufacturing with your part number and vehicle details to confirm the maximum trailer weight and tongue weight limits.
