They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Toyota RAV4 (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

Yes, CURT part number 13406 is designed for 2013–2018 Toyota RAV4 SUVs. However, installation steps differ between 2013–2015 and 2016–2018 models. The 2016–2018 installation requires removal of underbody panels, recovery loop bracket, and lowering of the exhaust, while 2013–2015 models require bending of frame tabs. Confirm your model year before beginning installation.
The CURT 13406 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 350 lbs when used as a weight-carrying hitch. You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Always verify that your vehicle and trailer combination does not exceed these limits.
Required tools are: torque wrench, ratchet, 10mm socket, 17mm socket, 19mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, flat screwdriver, utility knife, aviator shears, tape measure, marker, and safety glasses. Proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the installation and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: 5 washers (S-CON, 1/2, YZ, part number 30-00149), 5 hex head cap screws M12×1.25×40 CL10.9 YZ (part number 10-10277), and 2 cable ties 11/64×15" 50# UV black (part number CM-116415-CT). The bolts and washers attach the hitch to the vehicle frame using existing weldnuts. Cable ties are used to secure the kick sensor to the hitch cross tube on 2016–2018 models.
No, drilling is not required. The hitch uses existing weldnuts on the vehicle frame rails for attachment. However, trimming of the lower fascia and underbody panels is required.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance. Technical support is available at 1-877-287-8634.
Yes, trimming of the lower fascia is required on all 2013–2018 RAV4 models. For 2013–2015 models, locate the center of the fascia and mark a 4-inch-wide area centered horizontally and 1 inch up from the lower edge, then trim as needed. For 2016–2018 models, mark a 4-inch-wide area centered horizontally and 1¾ inches up from the lower edge. Before trimming, ensure no wires are in the way. Use a utility knife or aviator shears to trim.
Yes. If present, remove the driver side underbody panel and any panels between the fascia and end panels using a flat screwdriver and 10mm socket. These panels should be returned to the vehicle owner if not being trimmed. After installation, trim and reinstall the underbody panel(s) if reinstalling on the vehicle.
Yes. On 2013–2015 models, bend the frame tab at the end of the frame rearward on both sides to make room for the hitch. This is a permanent modification required for proper fitment.
Yes. On 2016–2018 models, lower the exhaust by lowering the rearmost exhaust isolator while supporting the exhaust. After the hitch is installed and torqued, raise the exhaust back into position and reinstall the exhaust isolator.
1. Remove driver side underbody panel and panels between fascia and end panels (step 6). 2. Remove recovery loop bracket using 17mm socket (step 7). 3. Lower exhaust by lowering rearmost exhaust isolator while supporting it (step 8). 4. Remove kick sensor from lower bumper cover if present (step 9). 5. Trim fascia 4 inches wide centered and 1¾ inches up from lower edge, ensuring no wires are in the way (step 10). 6. Raise hitch into position over exhaust and into bumper cavity; loosely install bolts and washers (step 11). 7. Torque all 12mm bolts to 86 lb-ft (step 12). 8. Pull fascia tabs away and raise hitch over passenger side exhaust, then slide under fascia into position; gently pull out fascia if needed (step 4). 5. Skip to steps 11–13 and 14–15 as needed.
All 12mm bolts (hex head cap screws M12×1.25×40 CL10.9 YZ) must be torqued to 86 lb-ft. Bolts should be loosely installed first to hold the hitch in place, then torqued to the final specification once the hitch is positioned correctly.
Remove the recovery loop bracket using a 17mm socket and return it to the vehicle owner. This is required to make room for the hitch installation.
If the kick sensor was removed from the lower bumper cover before trimming (to prevent damage), reattach it to the bumper area and secure it to the main cross tube of the hitch using the supplied cable ties (11/64×15" 50# UV black). This applies to 2016–2018 models.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Before trimming the fascia, ensure no wires are in the way to prevent damage. When lowering the exhaust on 2016–2018 models, support it properly to prevent injury. If you are hesitant to undertake this installation on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This maintenance is important for safe towing operation.
The hands-free, foot-activated power liftgate may only work in limited areas when the hitch is installed. This is a known limitation of the installation and does not indicate a problem with the hitch.
