They utilize the truck bed mounting platform, called the puck system, built into certain pickups today with the towing prep package. Using a set of anchors, the legs quickly and easily drop into the pucks, instantly equipping the truck for 5th wheel towing. This set of 5th wheel legs is designed to fit select model years of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD with 8-foot bed (see application info to verify fitment). With a gross trailer weight capacity of 25,000 lbs., the legs are compatible with most CURT 5th wheel hitch heads (weight capacities are limited to the lowest-rated towing component). The most unique feature of CURT OEM puck system 5th wheel legs is their quarter-turn anchoring system. This system is the key to streamlined 5th wheel towing. With the hitch head initially bolted onto the legs, the legs can quickly be installed or removed from the truck bed as needed, simply by turning the anchor handles. The quarter-turn anchors supply the necessary strength for towing heavy-duty 5th wheel trailers, and they feature an adjustable design to perfectly lock the hitch into place and eliminate any chucking noises. The CURT 16029 has a gross trailer weight (GTW) capacity of 25,000 lbs. and a vertical load capacity of 6,250 lbs. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, as this may result in separation, damage to the hitch, vehicle, trailer and/or serious injury or death.
You will need a ratchet, a 21mm socket, and a torque wrench. The torque wrench is essential to properly tighten the M14 bolts to the specified 100 ft-lbs.
The kit includes 2 legs, 4 locking bolts, 2 left handles, 2 right handles, 4 flat washers, 4 castle nuts, 4 pucks, 2 safety pins (3/8" x 1-3/4"), and 4 cotter pins. The M14 bolts for attaching the legs to the 5th wheel head are provided with the hitch.
Yes. In Step 1, remove the safety pin (#8) that secures the lock handles in the closed position, then open the handles 90°. You will reinstall the safety pins after final adjustment in Step 3.
Assemble the legs (#1) loosely to the 5th wheel head using the M14 hardware provided. Lower the assembly onto the factory mount position in the truck bed. Once in position, tighten the legs by torquing the bolts to 100 ft-lbs. using a torque wrench and 21mm socket.
The M14 bolts securing the legs to the 5th wheel head must be torqued to 100 ft-lbs. This is the standard torque setting for all M14 bolts on this product unless otherwise noted.
In Step 1, loosen the castle nuts until there is a minimum of 1/8" clearance between the lock bolt (#2) and the bottom surface of the puck (#7). In Step 3, adjust the castle nuts tension until the locking bolt is snug when the handles are rotated to the lock position. The handles should close with moderate hand pressure only; do not over-tighten, as this will strip the handles and cause hitch failure.
In Step 1, loosen the castle nuts until a minimum of 1/8" clearance is achieved between the lock bolt (#2) and the bottom surface of the puck (#7). This clearance is necessary before final adjustment in Step 3.
After adjusting the castle nuts and reinstalling the cotter pins, close all four locking handles and secure them using the provided safety pins (#8). The safety pins prevent the handles from opening during transport.
The cotter pins (#9) secure the castle nuts (#6) in place. Remove all four cotter pins in Step 1 before loosening the castle nuts for adjustment. After adjusting the castle nuts to the proper height in Step 3, reinstall the cotter pins to lock them in position.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Do not expose hands, body parts or clothing anywhere between the truck and trailer. Never position yourself or others under the trailer's kingpin area during coupling and uncoupling, as improperly coupled trailers can separate and drop without notice. These precautions prevent serious injury or death.
Wax the product after installing to protect it. Regular waxing is recommended to add a protective layer over the finish. Use only mild automotive detergent to clean the product. Do not use dish detergent, abrasive cleaners, abrasive pads, wire brushes or other similar products, as these may damage the finish. Do not use polish or wax containing abrasives.
Over-tightening the castle nuts will strip the handles and result in hitch failure. The handles should close with moderate hand pressure only. Forcing the handles to the closed position will damage them and compromise the hitch's ability to function safely.
