A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

The CURT 2" Front Receiver Hitch, Select Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 Trailer Hitch (Part #BKDK31604) fits 1994-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 models. The 2002 model year is the last year covered by this part number. For newer models, check for an updated version.
The CURT 2" Front Receiver Hitch, Select Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 Trailer Hitch (Part #BKDK31604) Drilling is required for installation. Typical installation time is 30-60 minutes. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The Curt 31604 has a gross load capacity of 5,000 lbs. trailer weight and 500 lbs. tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch, and a maximum line pull of 9,000 lbs. when used as a straight-line pull hitch. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than these specifications.
The Curt 31604 is designed for Dodge Ram Pickup front hitch installation. However, the manual does not specify which model years, cab styles, or bed lengths are compatible. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
Yes. Step 1 of the installation requires you to remove bumper bolts or bolt plates at the end of the frame, as well as the bolt and U-nut holding the bumper support to the angled section of the frame.
Drilling may be required. If the middle hole of the hitch is not already present on your frame, you will need to drill a 17/32" hole in both frame rails using the hitch as a template. The manual notes that drilling may be required but does not specify whether this is common or vehicle-dependent.
If your vehicle has a front air dam, you may need to trim a 2" x 2" piece or remove the air dam completely. The manual notes that this requirement depends on the specific model. Some models may require switching the spacer locations to accommodate clearances.
The kit includes: 8× 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 bolts (1-1/2" long), 8× 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 serrated flange nuts, 2× 0.250" × 1.00" × 3.00" square hole spacers, 6× 0.250" × 1.00" × 2.00" square hole spacers, and 2× 1/2" fishwire.
You will need a torque wrench (to torque fasteners to the specified values), a drill with a 17/32" bit (if frame holes are not present), and basic hand tools for removing the bumper and fastening hardware. The manual does not specify whether additional tools such as a socket set or impact wrench are required.
Torque values are: 3/8" fasteners to 45 lb-ft, 7/16" fasteners to 70 lb-ft, 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft, and 5/8" fasteners to 210 lb-ft. The kit includes 1/2" bolts and nuts, which should be torqued to 110 lb-ft.
1. Remove bumper bolts, bolt plates, and the bolt and U-nut holding the bumper support to the angled frame section. 2. Place the receiver into position and loosely fasten at the front holes with the provided hardware. 3. If the middle hole is not present on the frame, drill a 17/32" hole in both frame rails using the hitch as a template. 4. Fishwire the remaining hardware into the specified locations. 5. Torque all fasteners to their specified values (3/8" to 45 lb-ft, 7/16" to 70 lb-ft, 1/2" to 110 lb-ft, 5/8" to 210 lb-ft).
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a retorque interval or maintenance schedule beyond this general inspection requirement.
Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The hitch specifications (5,000 lbs. trailer weight, 500 lbs. tongue weight, or 9,000 lbs. max line pull) must not be used if they exceed what your vehicle is rated to tow.
