A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Dodge Ram 1500 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

The Curt 31320 is designed for Dodge Ram models from 2006 and later. However, installation requirements vary by model year and trim. For 2006 1/2-ton models, drilling and fascia trimming are required. Sport models require either a 1-inch thick spacer block kit (31320-SK) or removal of the metal reinforcement assembly and notching of the front fascia. Confirm your specific model year and trim with Curt Technical Support at 1-877-287-8634 before purchasing.
Sport models require additional modifications. You must either use a 1-inch thick spacer block kit (31320-SK) or remove the metal reinforcement assembly and notch the front fascia. Standard models do not require these modifications, though 2006 1/2-ton models do require drilling and fascia trimming for hitch clearance.
When used as a straight-line pull (winching), the maximum line pull is 9,000 lbs. The weight-carrying capacity values are not clearly specified in the manual. Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. For specific weight-carrying and tongue weight ratings, contact Curt Technical Support at 1-877-287-8634.
The hitch weight is 60 lbs.
The kit includes: 6 carriage bolts (7/16-14 UNC, 1-3/4 inch, Grade 8, part 10-10314), 6 serrated flange nuts (7/16-14 UNC, Grade 8, part 20-00103), 6 square hole spacers (0.250 x 0.88 x 2.25 inch, part CM-SP2), and 6 pieces of 7/16-inch fishwire (part 7_16 FISHWIRE).
Drilling is required for 2006 1/2-ton models. For these models, the hitch must be used as a template to mark and drill holes as required. Fascia trimming is also required for hitch clearance on 2006 models. Other model years may not require drilling; confirm your specific model year with Curt Technical Support at 1-877-287-8634.
Yes, fascia trimming is required for 2006 models to provide hitch clearance. The hitch must be used as a template to mark the trimming area. Sport models may require additional fascia notching if not using the 1-inch spacer block kit (31320-SK). Other model years may not require fascia trimming; confirm with Curt Technical Support at 1-877-287-8634.
1. Insert the carriage bolt spacers through the frame access slot on the inside surface of the frame. 2. Use the fishwire provided to install the carriage bolts into the frame, passing the fishwire through the spacer before attaching it to the bolt. Install the rear bolt first, the center bolt second, and the front bolt last on both sides. 3. Raise the hitch into position and attach a 7/16-inch flange nut to each bolt. Trim front fascia as needed for hitch clearance. 4. Torque all fasteners to 59 ft-lbs.
All fasteners must be torqued to 59 ft-lbs.
The fishwire is used to install the carriage bolts into the frame through the frame access slot. Pass the fishwire through the spacer that was previously installed, then attach it to the bolt to guide the bolt into position.
Install the rear bolt first, the center bolt second, and the front bolt last. This sequence applies to both sides of the hitch.
For maximum line pull rating, the winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees up or down from horizontal and 45 degrees left or right from straight ahead. Exceeding these angles may overload the winch, winch mount, and/or front mounted receiver.
No. Never use a ball or ball mount as an anchor point for a tow strap or winch cable. Severe personal injury or death could result. Use OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment instead.
Attach the return cable to the tow hook or recovery eye, not to the winch mount. Attaching the return cable to the winch mount may overload the winch mount and/or front mounted receiver.
Before using the hitch, verify that your front axle Gross Weight Rating (GAWR) will not be exceeded. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual or the specification plate on the driver's door frame. Measure the gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and/or suspension, resulting in accident, property damage, and personal injury.
Do not obstruct vehicle lights or driver view. Allow free air flow into the grille opening. Reposition the front-mounted license plate if obstructed. Accessories extend the front of the vehicle, which may reduce approach angle—use caution when parking and maneuvering. Rear wheel traction may be reduced, affecting handling—reduce speed and drive with caution.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This helps maintain safe operation and prevent loosening of hardware over time.
