When your vehicle does not readily provide an electrical connection for hooking up your trailer, CURT electrical converts offer the solution. Working tail lights on your trailer are absolutely essential any time you tow, and a converter provides an effective way to properly equip your vehicle for safe towing. A CURT electrical converter, much like our custom vehicle-to-trailer wiring harnesses, provides a trailer connector on your vehicle by splicing into the vehicle's electrical system. Electrical converters are designed to splice directly into the taillight wiring, rather than plugging into various sockets, giving them the name "taillight converters". Though it requires a little extra work compared to a custom wiring harness, a tail light converter offers a reliable, long-term connector solution. This CURT electrical converter is designed for 24-volt automotive systems (e.g. busses and trucks), for cab and chassis wiring and for 24-volt trailer lights.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.
CURT, a Lippert brand, offers a complete line of towing products and is the leading manufacturer of custom-fit trailer hitches. We offer the broadest selection of custom-fit hitches, and each one is designed, welded, and coated in Wisconsin.
CURT is also a leader in flat towing products, as well as 5th wheel, gooseneck, and weight distribution hitches, ball mounts, electrical components, cargo solutions, and other towing accessories.

Call 888-634-9494No. The 56424 is only compatible with 24V vehicle wiring systems and 24V trailer wiring systems. Using this converter with a 24V vehicle system and a standard 12V trailer can cause loss of warranty, lamp failures, overheating and potential fire. You must verify that both your vehicle and trailer use 24V systems before installing this product.
The 56424 is designed for 24V negative ground systems only. It will not work with 12V systems or 24V positive ground systems. Verify your vehicle uses a 24V negative ground system before purchasing.
The 56424 provides 24-volt output with the following ratings: Signal Circuits (left turn, right turn) output 2.1 amps per side; Tail/Running Circuits output 7.5 amps total. Do not exceed these product ratings, trailer lamp ratings or tow vehicle lamp ratings, whichever is lower.
You will need: a 24V compatible test lamp, probe or multi-meter to identify vehicle wiring; a screwdriver to disconnect the battery terminal and secure the ground wire; a drill with a 3/32" bit (if drilling a new grounding hole); cable ties to secure converter wires; and snap locks to attach input wires. The manual notes that snap locks, cable ties, self-tapping screws, butt connectors and ring terminals are not included with the converter.
No. Snap locks are not included with the 56424. You must purchase them separately. The manual specifies that snap locks are used to attach the input wires of the converter to the corresponding vehicle harness wires.
You need a ring terminal and a self-tapping screw to secure the white ground wire. The manual states that self-tapping screws are not included, so you must purchase one separately. Alternatively, you can use an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame if one is available near the converter mounting location.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery terminal before connecting the converter input wires to the vehicle harness. This is a required safety step in the installation procedure.
Use a 24V compatible test lamp, probe or multi-meter to identify the wires in the vehicle taillight harness for left turn, right turn, taillights and brake lights. Once identified, you will connect the converter input wires to these circuits: Green wire to right-turn circuit, Yellow wire to left-turn circuit, Red wire to brake-light circuit, and Brown wire to taillight circuit.
The four input wires connect as follows: Green wire connects to the right-turn circuit; Yellow wire connects to the left-turn circuit; Red wire connects to the brake-light circuit; Brown wire connects to the taillight circuit. The white wire is the ground connection.
Mount the black converter box using double-sided tape in a clean, accessible location. If mounting outside the vehicle, choose a location out of the path of spray and debris from the rear wheels and road surface. The mounting surface should be clean and free of rust, dirt and paint.
You may need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the ground wire screw, but only if a suitable existing grounding point (such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame) is not available near the converter. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole if you cannot use an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. The hole should be in a clean area free of rust, dirt and paint.
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. This is especially important when locating a grounding point for the converter.
Test the converter using one of two methods: (1) With a 24V compatible test light, attach the ground lead to the exposed ground wire of the trailer side end, then activate the tow vehicle left turn, right turn, tail and brake lights one at a time and probe the three signal outputs to confirm proper functionality. (2) With a 24V compatible trailer, connect the trailer and run the same test using the trailer lights. If a trailer light function does not work, disconnect the trailer, turn vehicle functions off and recheck with a circuit tester. If the tester shows good functionality, the problem is with the trailer, not the converter.
First, disconnect the trailer and turn off the corresponding function on the tow vehicle. Then recheck the function with a 24V compatible circuit tester. If the tester shows good functionality, the problem is with the trailer, not the converter. If the tester shows no functionality, there may be an issue with the converter installation or the vehicle wiring connection.
No. The 56424 is only compatible with 24V vehicle and 24V trailer systems. Using it with a 24V vehicle and 12V trailer can cause lamp failures, overheating and fire.
Snap locks, cable ties, self-tapping screws, butt connectors and ring terminals are not included and must be purchased separately.
Yes, disconnect the negative battery terminal before connecting the converter input wires to the vehicle harness.
Drilling is only required if no existing grounding point is available. If needed, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the ground wire screw.
Signal circuits (turn signals) output 2.1 amps per side; tail/running circuits output 7.5 amps total at 24 volts.
Disconnect the trailer and turn off the corresponding light function on the tow vehicle. Recheck the function using a 24V compatible circuit tester by probing the signal output on the trailer side end of the converter. If the tester shows good functionality, the problem is with the trailer. If the tester shows no functionality, the problem is with the converter installation or vehicle wiring connection.
