When your vehicle does not readily provide an electrical connection for hooking up your trailer, CURT electrical converts offer the solution. Working tail lights on your trailer are absolutely essential any time you tow, and a converter provides an effective way to properly equip your vehicle for safe towing. A CURT electrical converter, much like our custom vehicle-to-trailer wiring harnesses, provides a trailer connector on your vehicle by splicing into the vehicle's electrical system. Electrical converters are designed to splice directly into the taillight wiring, rather than plugging into various sockets, giving them the nickname "taillight converters". Though it requires a little extra work compared to a custom wiring harness, a tail light converter offers a reliable, long-term connector solution. This CURT electrical converter is designed to convert a 3-wire system to a 2-wire system and provides a standard 4-way flat connector socket to plug in your trailer. It is designed to fit certain years of the Audi Q5 (except hybrid), BMW 328i xDrive sedan, BMW X5 SUV, Infiniti M37x sedan or Mercedes SLK250 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com).This converter is made with cutting-edge surface-mount technology (SMT) circuitry, featuring electrical components that are mounted directly to the surface of the board rather than being inserted into a series of holes. The Curt 56190 is a tail light converter that converts your vehicle's factory taillight signals to a 4-flat trailer connector. It allows you to connect a trailer with standard 4-flat lighting to your vehicle by tapping into the vehicle's existing taillight wiring (tail lights, brake lights, left turn, and right turn circuits) and providing a powered 4-flat output connector.
The Curt 56190 converter system is designed only for 12-volt negative ground systems. It will not work on 12-volt positive ground systems or any other voltage. Verify your vehicle uses a 12-volt negative ground system before purchasing.
The Curt 56190 is designed for vehicles with accessible taillight wiring. The manual lists typical taillight wiring locations behind driver's and passenger's side tail light housings, rear access panels, and rear bumpers. If your vehicle's taillight wiring is not accessible in these locations or uses a multiplexed or integrated lighting system, the converter may not be suitable. Consult the manufacturer or a professional installer if you cannot locate your vehicle's taillight wiring in the typical locations shown.
You will need: a test lamp or circuit tester to identify the taillight wiring circuits; wire taps to splice into the vehicle's harness; cable ties to secure the converter wires; a drill with a 3/32" bit to create the ground hole; and a screwdriver to install the ground screw. The Curt 56190 has five input wires that connect to your vehicle's taillight harness: Brown wire connects to the Tail Light Circuit; Yellow wire connects to the Left Turn Circuit; Red wire connects to the Brake Light Circuit; Green wire connects to the Right Turn Circuit; and White wire is the Ground connection. The converter outputs a 4-flat connector for the trailer.
Use wire taps to attach each converter input wire to the corresponding vehicle harness wire you identified with the test lamp: Brown to Tail Light, Yellow to Left Turn, Red to Brake Light, and Green to Right Turn. Push the metal lock down on each wire tap when the wires are fully inserted to secure the connection.
