This CURT taillight converter provides a standard 4-way flat connection for hooking up your trailer lights to your vehicle. The converter is built with a potted enclosure in which the electrical components are encased in a solid compound that seals them off from moisture and impacts. Yes. Step 3 of the installation instructions requires you to locate the vehicle battery and disconnect the negative battery terminal before wiring the converter. The negative battery cable must be disconnected before wiring the power wire to avoid electrical hazards.
With the vehicle running and all lights off, probe the taillight connectors while still connected. Using a multimeter on DC volt setting, any wires carrying less than two volts will not be used. Using a test light, any wires that illuminate the bulb (dim or fully) will be used. Activate each light circuit one at a time (left turn, right turn, tail, brake) and probe the remaining wires to determine if your vehicle uses a two-wire system (combined stop and turn signal with independent tail) or three-wire system (independent stop, turn, and tail signals). Refer to the 'How to Determine Vehicle Wiring Types' chart on page 2.
Locate a flat spot near the taillight. Adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape and secure it with the included cable ties. The manual provides wiring location guides showing eight possible locations for SUVs/vans (S1–S8), seven for passenger cars (P1–P7), and five for pickup trucks (T1–T5), ranging from behind taillight housings to under rear floor panels or behind bumpers.
Using snap locks, attach the input wires of the taillight converter to the corresponding vehicle harness wires identified in your wiring type. For a two-wire system: green wire to right stop/turn, yellow wire to left stop/turn, brown wire to tail wire, and red wire grounded. For a three-wire system: green wire to right turn, yellow wire to left turn, red wire to stop wire, and brown wire to tail wire. Refer to the wiring installation table and photos A, B, and C on page 3.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and the provided screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route 12-gauge wire or larger from the converter to the vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. Use a ring terminal for the battery connection. Install a fuse holder with a 10-amp fuse maximum on the positive battery connection. The fuse should be installed after all other installation steps are complete.

Signal circuits are limited to 3.0 amps per side. Tail and running circuits are limited to 6.0 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Before drilling to create a pilot hole for the ground screw, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. The area where you drill should be free of rust, dirt, and paint.
Two testing methods are available. With a test light: attach the ground lead to the exposed ground terminal of the 4-flat end, then activate the tow vehicle's left turn, right turn, tail, and brake lights one at a time. Probe the three receptacles of the 4-flat end to confirm proper functionality. With a trailer: mate the 4-flat with the trailer and run the same test using the trailer lights. If a trailer light function does not work, disconnect the trailer 4-flat, turn vehicle functions off, and recheck with a circuit tester. If functionality is good, check the trailer for problems.
Disconnect the trailer 4-flat connector from the converter. Turn the corresponding light function off on the vehicle. Using a circuit tester, recheck the function at the converter's 4-flat receptacles. If functionality is good at the converter, the problem is with the trailer. If functionality is still not working, the problem is with the converter installation or wiring.
