If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Jeep Wagoneer S (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

The CURT 56561 Vehicle-Side Custom 4-Pin Trailer Wiring Harness, Fits Select Jeep Wagoneer S (Part #BKDK56561) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The Curt 56561 is a T-Connector Harness with a powered converter module designed to provide trailer lighting connections for SUVs and Vans. It converts the vehicle's factory taillight signals (left turn, right turn, brake, and running lights) to a 4-way flat connector for trailer use. The system includes a powered converter module that mounts inside the vehicle and routes wiring to the rear taillights.
The Curt 56561 is designed for SUVs and Vans using S-series wiring locations S1 and S2 (behind driver and passenger side taillight housings). The manual does not specify which makes, models, or model years are compatible. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
No. The Curt 56561 converter system is designed only for 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. It cannot be used on positive ground vehicles. Check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer to confirm your vehicle's electrical system type.
Required tools are: ratchet, ratchet extension (6"), socket (10mm), wrench (10mm), Torx T-25 bit, Torx T-30 bit, Phillips screwdriver, wire cutter, wire stripper, crimping tool, panel trim tool, cutting tool, and fish wire. Fish wire can be made from a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope or string as needed.
The kit includes: a powered converter module with double-sided tape for mounting, a 4-way flat connector, a 4-flat dust cover, cable ties for securing wires, a white 12 GA ground wire with ring terminal, a black 12 GA power wire, yellow and green signal wires, a fuse holder with 10-amp fuse, butt connectors, and a screw for attaching the ground ring terminal to the vehicle body. A bracket for securing the 4-way connector is not included.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery post before beginning installation. This protects the vehicle's electrical system and prevents accidental grounding. The negative battery terminal is reconnected in Step 14, after all other wiring is complete. Ensure the battery cab is isolated to prevent creating an electrical system ground.
The installation difficulty is rated as Difficult. Installation time and effort depend on the installer's level of expertise, the condition of the vehicle, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Step 1 is to open the rear hatch and remove the rear cargo floor coverings. Set these coverings aside after removal, as they will be reinstalled at the end of the installation.
First, locate and remove the two taillight trim panels covering the taillight mounting bolts by pulling them backward. Use a T-25 Torx bit to remove the cover mounting screws on both driver and passenger trim panels. Then, on the passenger side, remove the taillight mount screw using a T-30 Torx bit, gently pull the taillight assembly rearward, and set it aside. Repeat for the driver side. Finally, disconnect the wire harness connector housings from both taillight assemblies.
Fish wiring is a technique to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole (a hole where you cannot see the other end). Insert a fish wire (which can be a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope or string) through the blind hole and locate it on the other side. Use tape to secure the harness to the fish wire and pull it back through. If the wire gets hung up, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist it to loosen it. In the Curt 56561 installation, fish wire is used to route the yellow wire (left turn) up between the body and rear bumper cover on the driver side, and the green wire (right turn) down to the bumper on the passenger side.
Mount the lighting module box on a flat, clean surface that is out of the way from sprays and debris. Use the provided double-sided tape to adhere it. Mount the box with the epoxy side down to prevent environmental intrusion. Failure to mount the box in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential damage.
The black 12 GA power wire and white 12 GA ground wire are routed up through the rear cargo vent on the driver side and into the rear battery compartment. The white ground wire with ring terminal is attached to the negative battery post. The black power wire is routed from the vehicle battery as shown on the provided 'Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet'. The power wire must be routed to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components, and must be secured to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties.
Route the 4-way flat connector along the rear bumper fascia and over to the center of the vehicle. Secure the 4-way connector into a bracket (not included) and secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties. The manual does not specify an alternative mounting method if a bracket is not available.
Step 14 is to reconnect the negative battery terminal and install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. Then reinstall all removed items in the reverse order of disassembly to complete the installation.
Drilling may be required only for the ground wire connection. If the white ground wire ring terminal cannot be attached to the vehicle body using the provided screw at an existing location, you may need to drill a 3/32" hole. When drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be behind or under any surface before drilling to avoid personal injury or property damage.
When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. This prevents damage to the wire insulation and potential electrical hazards.
Signal circuits (left turn, right turn): 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 6.0 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
A 10-amp maximum fuse is required. The fuse holder is included in the kit. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete. Exceeding the 10-amp rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Both the black power wire and white ground wire are 12 GA (12 gauge). The power wire routed to the vehicle battery must be 12 GA or larger.
Yellow = Left turn signal; Green = Right turn signal; Red = Brake signal; Brown = Taillight (running lights). The black wire is the positive power wire, and the white wire is the ground wire.
The white 12 GA ground wire has a ring terminal attached. Route it from the lighting module through the rear cargo vent on the driver side into the rear battery compartment. Attach the ring terminal to the negative battery post using the provided screw. If necessary, drill a 3/32" hole to secure it. Ensure the negative cable is not grounded to a metal item, as this could damage the vehicle's electrical system.
The black 12 GA power wire is routed from the vehicle battery location as shown on the provided 'Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet'. Route it to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. Secure it to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties. When passing through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect it from sharp edges. The power wire connects to the converter module via a butt connector and is protected by a 10-amp fuse holder.
Disconnect the negative battery post before beginning installation and ensure the battery cab is isolated to protect it from creating an electrical system ground. Do not lay tools across the positive terminal (typically noted with red covers or a red '+' symbol), as this can cause a ground short leading to sparks and/or electrical shocks. Do not ground the negative cable to a metal item, as this could damage the vehicle's electrical system. Reconnect the negative battery terminal only after all other wiring is complete (Step 14).
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be behind or under any surface to avoid personal injury or property damage. This is especially important when drilling the 3/32" hole for the ground wire ring terminal attachment.
After installation is complete, verify that the harness is functioning by using a test light, 4-Way Tester, multimeter, or by attaching the 4-way flat connector to any trailer with functioning lights. This confirms that all signal circuits (left turn, right turn, brake, and running lights) are working correctly.
Perform periodic inspection of all wires and connections to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. This helps maintain proper function and prevent electrical issues.

You need: ratchet, ratchet extension (6"), 10mm socket and wrench, Torx T-25 and T-30 bits, Phillips screwdriver, wire cutter, wire stripper, crimping tool, panel trim tool, cutting tool, and fish wire (or equivalent such as a wire hanger or stiff wire).
Yes. Disconnect the negative battery post before beginning installation. Reconnect it only after all other wiring is complete in Step 14.
A 10-amp maximum fuse is required for the battery connection. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete.
Yellow = Left turn; Green = Right turn; Red = Brake; Brown = Taillight. Black = Power; White = Ground.
If the fish wire or harness gets hung up on something during routing, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it from what it is caught on. Ensure the fish wire is long enough to stick out on the other side before inserting it through the blind hole.
