Whether you have just installed a new custom wiring harness or are trying to locate the cause of an electrical problem, CURT connector testers are great for testing tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, ground connections and other electrical components on your vehicle. A connector tester works by plugging into the connector socket on your vehicle and responding to the various electrical signals produced by pushing the brake pedal, signaling a turn, turning on the running lights and so on. When the socket is getting proper power, the tester's various LEDs will light up corresponding to each wire in the connector. Testing your vehicle-side socket is essential after installing a new custom vehicle-to-trailer wiring harness and is highly recommended every time you hitch up to tow. Also, if you are experiencing electrical problems with your trailer, a CURT tester will be able to tell you whether the problem is rooted in your vehicle's electrical system or if your trailer needs some rewiring. All CURT connector testers come with LED lights to be bright and long-lasting. Wire testers are available for 4-way flat, 5-way flat, 6-way round and 7-way RV blade connectors. The Curt 58272 is a 7-way trailer connector tester that plugs into your vehicle's 7-way trailer housing to verify that each circuit is functioning correctly. It uses colour-coded LED lights to indicate the status of right turn/brake, left turn/brake, backup/auxiliary, electric brakes, 12-volt power, and taillight circuits.
You only need a Phillips screwdriver. This is used to adjust the LED head orientation on the back of the tester so you can see the lights clearly when it is plugged into the 7-way housing.
The Curt 58272 is designed to plug into any 7-way trailer connector housing. The manual does not specify vehicle-specific compatibility limitations, but you should verify your vehicle has a 7-way connector before purchasing.
1. Plug the tester into the 7-way housing at the back of your vehicle. 2. Start the vehicle. 3. Test each circuit by performing the actions listed below and observing the corresponding LED light. 4. Refer to the colour-coded abbreviations (RT, BU, BK, 12V, LT, TM) to understand what each light represents.
RT stands for Right Turn/Brake and is shown as a clear light. When you turn on the right turn signal, the RT light should flash intermittently. When you depress the brake pedal, the RT light should stay on constantly. If it does not behave this way, the right turn or brake circuit may have a fault.
LT stands for Left Turn/Brake and is shown as a red light. When you turn on the left turn signal, the LT light should flash intermittently. When you depress the brake pedal, the LT light should stay on constantly. If it does not behave this way, the left turn or brake circuit may have a fault.
BU stands for Back-up or Auxiliary and is shown as a yellow light. When you shift the vehicle into reverse, the BU light should stay on constantly. If it does not, the backup or auxiliary circuit may have a fault.
BK stands for Electric Brakes and is shown as a blue light. When you depress the brake pedal or press the manual override on the brake controller, the BK light should stay on constantly. If it does not, the electric brake circuit may have a fault.
The 12V light (purple) indicates 12-volt positive power. This light should be on constantly when the tester is plugged in and the vehicle is running. If it is not on, there may be a power supply issue with the 7-way connector.
TM stands for Taillights and is shown as a green light. When you turn on the vehicle's headlights, the TM light should stay on constantly. If it does not, the taillight circuit may have a fault.
1. Flip the tester over and locate the Phillips head screw on the back. 2. Loosen the screw until you can rotate the LED head to the orientation that allows you to best see the lighting function when the tester is in the vehicle 7-way. 3. Tighten the Phillips head screw to be snug, but do not over-tighten.
Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. This means you must respect both the tester's maximum capacity and your vehicle's electrical system limits to avoid damage or unsafe operation.
Perform periodic inspection of all wires and connections to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. This helps ensure the tester continues to function properly and safely.
After plugging the tester into the 7-way housing and starting the vehicle, perform a function test for each circuit listed in the manual. Test the right turn signal, left turn signal, brake pedal, reverse gear, headlights, and brake controller (if equipped). Each light should respond as described in the manual. If any light does not respond correctly, the corresponding circuit may have a fault.
The RT light should flash intermittently when the right turn signal is on. If it does not, the right turn circuit in your vehicle's 7-way connector or wiring may have a fault. Check for loose connections, damaged wires, or a faulty turn signal bulb or switch. You may also need to verify the trailer connector wiring with a professional.
The 12V light should be on constantly when the tester is plugged in and the vehicle is running. If it is not on, there is no 12-volt power reaching the 7-way connector. Check that the vehicle is running, the connector is fully seated, and verify the power supply wiring to the 7-way connector for loose connections or damage.
If multiple lights are not responding, the issue may be with the 7-way connector itself rather than individual circuits. Verify that the tester is fully plugged into the 7-way housing, the vehicle is running, and the connector is clean and undamaged. If the 12V light is also off, there is likely a power supply problem. Check the connector wiring and power supply to the 7-way housing.
