They provide a standard 4-way flat connector to plug into the RV socket and synchronize the vehicle's tail lights, turn signals and brake lights with the RV's. Open the rear tailgate and remove the floor cover, rear storage cover, and spare tire cover. Remove the bolts holding the cargo tie downs using a 10mm socket, then use a small flat screwdriver to remove the side panels. Unplug the factory taillight connectors. Route the RV harness with yellow-wire connectors through the opening at the bottom of the plastic side panel, position the connectors between the separated vehicle harness connectors, and press firmly until they lock. Pull on the connectors to ensure the locks are engaged.
Open the rear tailgate and remove the spare tire cover. Remove the wing nuts holding the felt liner in place on both sides to access the taillight connectors. Unplug the factory connectors. Route the RV harness with yellow-wire connectors through the opening at the bottom of the felt side panel, position the connectors between the separated vehicle harness connectors, and press firmly until they lock. Pull on the connectors to ensure the locks are engaged.
On the HHR, locate the factory ground ring post on the driver's side. Using a 10mm socket, remove the nut. Place the RV harness ground ring with the factory ground ring and tighten the nut back down.
On the Cobalt and G5, locate a clean and accessible mounting location on the vehicle near the RV harness ends within reach of the white wire and ring terminal. Remove any debris or undercoating to expose clean metal, then drill a 3/32" hole. Attach the ring terminal on the white wire using one of the #8 self-tapping ground screws provided.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two 3/32" holes to mount the 4-flat bracket. On Cobalt and G5 models, you must also drill one 3/32" hole for the ground screw. Take care not to drill through the vehicle body or any exposed surfaces.
Yes, you must remove the grommet and make a slit in it to allow the RV harness wiring to pass through. After routing the 4-flat harness, place the grommet around the wires and reseat it. It may be necessary to apply silicone sealant to seal the grommet where the cut was made.
Route the 4-flat harness from underneath the vehicle over the exhaust to the driver's rear wheel well. Use a fish tape to route it up and over from the left side to the right side of the rear wheel well (you may need to remove plastic clips). Continue routing towards the front along the frame by the plastic trim piece, securing with cable ties. Repeat the fish tape routing through the driver's side wheel well, then route to the frame rail across the front of the vehicle where the 4-flat bracket will be mounted.
Route the 4-flat harness through the grommet opening behind the felt liner on the driver's side. Do not seat the grommet yet; excess slack will be stored behind the felt liner. Remove push clips in the driver's side rear wheel well cover. Use a fish tape to route the harness up and over from the left to the right side of the rear wheel well. Continue routing towards the front along the brake lines all the way into the engine compartment. Route around the battery on the right side, then continue along the factory wire harness to the front mounting location for the 4-flat bracket.
Mount the 4-flat bracket to the frame rail that goes across the front of the vehicle. Use the bracket as a template to mark two holes, drill two 3/32" holes, and attach the bracket using the two screws provided. Take care not to drill through the vehicle body or any exposed surfaces.
The 4-flat harness color code is: White = Ground, Brown = Tail Lights, Green = Right Turn and Brake Signal, Yellow = Left Turn and Brake Signal.
Avoid routing the harness near moving parts or areas where wires could be cut, pinched, or burned. Do not route the harness near fuel lines, as this may cause fuel to ignite. Failure to follow these warnings may cause property damage, personal injury, or loss of life.
With the 4-flat extension plugged into the RV harness on one end and the motorhome on the other, test that the functions work on your vehicle. These functions will only work on the brake/tail combination lamp. When not in use, store the 4-flat extension in the vehicle's glove box.
The Curt 58929 is designed for RV use. However, the manual notes that the harness includes a connection point labeled 'FOR TRAILER TOW USE ONLY: TAILLIGHT REQUIRED.' If you want to tow a trailer while the RV harness is left on the vehicle, you can plug in the 4-flat harness part number 58918 and you will be ready to tow.
