Whether you have just installed a new custom wiring harness or are trying to locate the cause of an electrical problem, CURT connector testers are great for testing tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, ground connections and other electrical components on your vehicle. A connector tester works by plugging into the connector socket on your vehicle and responding to the various electrical signals produced by pushing the brake pedal, signaling a turn, turning on the running lights and so on. When the socket is getting proper power, the tester's various LEDs will light up corresponding to each wire in the connector. Testing your vehicle-side socket is essential after installing a new custom vehicle-to-trailer wiring harness and is highly recommended every time you hitch up to tow. Also, if you are experiencing electrical problems with your trailer, a CURT tester will be able to tell you whether the problem is rooted in your vehicle's electrical system or if your trailer needs some rewiring. All CURT connector testers come with LED lights to be bright and long-lasting. Wire testers are available for 4-way flat, 5-way flat, 6-way round and 7-way RV blade connectors. The Curt 58273 is a 7-way trailer connector tester. It plugs into the 7-way housing at the back of your vehicle to test the function of each trailer lighting circuit. The tester uses colour-coded LED lights to indicate whether the right turn/brake, left turn/brake, back-up/auxiliary, electric brakes, 12-volt power, and taillight circuits are working correctly.
You need only a Phillips screwdriver. This is used to adjust the orientation of the LED head on the tester so you can see the lights clearly when it is plugged into the vehicle's 7-way connector.

Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning. Have a Phillips screwdriver available. Ensure your vehicle's engine can be started and that you can operate the turn signals, brake pedal, and reverse gear to perform the function tests.
1. Plug the tester into the 7-way housing at the back of your vehicle. 2. Start the vehicle. 3. For each circuit, perform the corresponding test: turn on the right turn signal (RT light should flash), depress the brake pedal (RT and LT lights should stay on, BK light should stay on), shift into reverse (BU light should stay on), turn on headlights (TM light should stay on), and check that the 12V light is on constantly. All lights should respond as described for each circuit to indicate proper function.
The tester uses six colour-coded LED lights: RT (Clear) for right turn/brake, LT (Red) for left turn/brake, BU (Yellow) for back-up or auxiliary, BK (Blue) for electric brakes, 12V (Purple) for 12-volt power, and TM (Green) for taillights. Each light illuminates when its corresponding circuit is active.
Flip the tester over and locate the Phillips head screw. Loosen it until you can rotate the LED head to the orientation that allows you to best see the lights when the tester is plugged into the 7-way connector. Tighten the screw to be snug, but do not over-tighten.
The RT light (Clear) should flash intermittently when you turn the right turn signal on. When you depress the brake pedal, the RT light should stay on constantly.
The LT light (Red) should flash intermittently when you turn the left turn signal on. When you depress the brake pedal, the LT light should stay on constantly.
The BU light (Yellow) should stay on constantly when you shift the vehicle into reverse.
The BK light (Blue) should stay on constantly when you depress the brake pedal or press the manual override on the brake controller.
The 12V light (Purple) should be on constantly whenever the tester is plugged into the 7-way connector and the vehicle is running.
The TM light (Green) should stay on constantly when you turn on the vehicle's headlights.
Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. The tester is designed to test circuits only and should not be used to power trailer lights or other equipment beyond its rated capacity.

If a light does not illuminate when its corresponding circuit is activated, the circuit may have a fault. The manual instructs you to test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. Consult a qualified technician or your vehicle's wiring diagram to diagnose the issue.
