Whatever the next checkpoint is on your adventure -- whether it's getting your bike on the trail before sunrise or making it to the campground before dark -- CURT class 2 hitches let you Bring It with confidence. These receiver hitches are made to handle most light-duty towing applications and offer a custom fit for your vehicle. Typically used on full-size cars, crossovers, compact SUVs, minivans or even compact pickup trucks, a CURT class 2 trailer hitch complements the design of smaller vehicles. This particular class 2 hitch is made to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Subaru Crosstrek (to verify vehicle compatibility, see application info). It offers a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. Class 2 trailer hitches can typically be used to tow a variety of lightweight trailers, such as a small utility trailer, small fishing boat trailer or popup camper (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). They are also perfect for adding cargo space to your vehicle with a bike rack or cargo carrier. This class 2 hitch features a 1-1/4" receiver tube to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch-mounted accessory. For safety, it is tested in accordance with SAE J684. A custom trailer hitch design requires extra care, and as such, CURT class 2 hitches are engineered using real vehicles and hands-on research. We use high-strength steel, robotic welding and rigorous testing to produce hitches that are built to fit your lifestyle. To ensure that each hitch will be a reliable extension of your vehicle, we also finish our hitches in a co-curing of liquid A-coat and black powder coat, giving them long-lasting rust and wear resistance.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

The CURT 12184 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 350 lbs. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating.
No. The manual states that all non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to this hitch must be supported by CURT 18050 stabilizing straps. Do not use the hitch alone for cargo carriers or similar equipment. See the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for information on the 18050 straps.

You will need: a ratchet, 3/4" socket, die grinder, torque wrench, and safety glasses. The die grinder is required to enlarge the access holes in the frame rails.
Two people may be required to ease installation. While one person may be able to complete the installation, having a second person will help with positioning and holding the hitch during the process.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Contact CURT Technical Support at 877-287-8634 for clarification on this step.
No drilling is required. However, you must enlarge the existing access holes in the frame rails using a die grinder. The manual specifies that you enlarge access holes and then use fishwire to thread the bolts and spacers into position.
The kit includes: 4× 1/2"-13 UNC carriage bolts, 1-1/2" long, Grade 8 (part 10-10287); 4× 1/2"-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, Grade 8 (part 20-00062); 4× square hole spacers 0.250" × 1.00" × 3.00" (part CM-SP6); 2× round hole spacers 0.250" × 1.50" × 2.00" (part CM-SP16); and 4× 1/2" fishwires (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
1. Remove 2 rubber plugs from each frame rail (leave center plugs in place) and return them to the vehicle owner. 2. Enlarge access holes and use fishwire to thread 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP6 spacers into position; reverse fishwire the remaining bolts and spacers into the access hole. Leave fishwires attached. 3. Raise the hitch into position using CM-SP16 spacers to level as necessary. Remove fishwires and loosely install the 4 hex flange nuts. Do not push bolts into the frame. 4. Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. This includes the 1/2"-13 UNC carriage bolts and serrated flange nuts.
Two types of spacers are used: CM-SP6 square hole spacers (0.250" × 1.00" × 3.00") are installed with the bolts to position the hitch on the frame rails. CM-SP16 round hole spacers (0.250" × 1.50" × 2.00") are used to level the hitch as required during step 3. The spacers ensure proper alignment and level installation.
Fishwires are tools used to thread the bolts and spacers through the enlarged access holes in the frame rails. The process involves: (1) using fishwire to thread the first set of 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP6 spacers into position, then (2) reverse fishwiring the remaining bolts and spacers into the access hole. The fishwires are left attached until step 3, when the hitch is raised into position and the fishwires are removed before installing the nuts.
No. In step 3, after removing the fishwires, you should loosely install the 4 hex flange nuts. Do not fully tighten them at this stage. The fasteners are only fully torqued to 110 lb-ft in step 4, after the hitch is positioned and leveled.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Additionally, be careful not to push the bolts into the frame during installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection is important for safe towing operation.
