Whatever the next checkpoint is on your adventure -- whether it's getting your bike on the trail before sunrise or making it to the campground before dark -- CURT class 2 hitches let you Bring It with confidence. These receiver hitches are made to handle most light-duty towing applications and offer a custom fit for your vehicle. Typically used on full-size cars, crossovers, compact SUVs, minivans or even compact pickup trucks, a CURT class 2 trailer hitch complements the design of smaller vehicles. This particular class 2 hitch is made to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Subaru Legacy and Outback (to verify vehicle compatibility, see application info). It offers a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. Class 2 trailer hitches can typically be used to tow a variety of lightweight trailers, such as a small utility trailer, small fishing boat trailer or popup camper (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). They are also perfect for adding cargo space to your vehicle with a bike rack or cargo carrier. This class 2 hitch features a 1-1/4" receiver tube to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch-mounted accessory. For safety, it is tested in accordance with SAE J684. A custom trailer hitch design requires extra care, and as such, CURT class 2 hitches are engineered using real vehicles and hands-on research. We use high-strength steel, robotic welding and rigorous testing to produce hitches that are built to fit your lifestyle. To ensure that each hitch will be a reliable extension of your vehicle, we also finish our hitches in a co-curing of liquid A-coat and black powder coat, giving them long-lasting rust and wear resistance.

The CURT Class 2 Trailer Hitch, 1-1/4" Receiver, Select Subaru Legacy, Outback Trailer Hitch (Part #BKDK12270) Drilling is not required for installation. Typical installation time is 30-60 minutes. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Part number 12270 is designed for 1990–2004 Subaru Legacy Sedan and 1995–2004 Outback models. If your vehicle is outside these model years or is a different body style, this hitch is not compatible. Verify your vehicle's year and model before purchasing.
The manual lists a gross load capacity when used as a weight-carrying hitch, but the specific weight values are not printed in this version of the manual. Contact Curt Manufacturing technical support at 1-877-287-8634 for the exact trailer weight and tongue weight ratings, and always verify that your vehicle's towing capacity is not exceeded.
The Curt 12270 is designed for use with ball mount number D-19 / 45519. Use only this compatible ball mount to ensure proper fitment and safety.
The kit includes: 4× 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 serrated flange nuts (part 20-00062); 2× 1/2-13 UNC 1-3/4" Grade 8 carriage bolts (part 10-10272); 2× 0.250 × 1.00 × 3.00" square hole spacers (part CM-SP6); 2× 1/2-13 UNC 2" Grade 8 hex cap screws (part 10-10286); 4× 0.250 × 1.38 × 1.50" round hole spacers (part CM-SP25); and 1× 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
Yes, you must lower the vapor canister (the black plastic box attached to the passenger side frame rail) to make room for hitch installation. However, it is not necessary to disconnect the vapor hoses—simply lower it and reattach it after the hitch is secured. This is a temporary repositioning, not a permanent removal.
You must remove the rearmost exhaust hanger and move the muffler to one side to allow clearance for hitch installation. The exhaust system itself is not removed, only repositioned. After installation is complete, reattach the exhaust hanger.
No drilling is required. The hitch uses existing frame holes and factory tie-down loops on your Subaru Legacy or Outback.
The fishwire technique is used to insert the carriage bolts into the frame rails from underneath. You reverse the 1/2-13 × 1-3/4" carriage bolts and CM-SP6 spacer into the frame rails through the access holes at the bottom of the frame. The manual references a 'Reverse Pull Fishwire Technique' diagram for detailed visual guidance on this procedure.
When raising the hitch into position, the driver side plate must be on the outside of the tow loop, and the passenger side plate must be on the inside of the tow loop. This orientation is critical for proper alignment with the factory tow loop holes.
Two fastening points are used: (1) the carriage bolts (part 10-10272) with CM-SP6 spacers, secured with 1/2" flange nuts to the frame rails; and (2) the 1/2-13 × 2" hex bolts (part 10-10286) with CM-SP25 spacers, secured through the side plates into the factory tow loop holes with 1/2" flange nuts.
All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. This applies to the flange nuts on the carriage bolts, the hex bolts, and all other 1/2" fasteners used in the installation.
Non-trailer loads (such as cargo carriers or bike racks) may be used, but they must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. Always follow the load manufacturer's instructions and do not exceed the hitch's weight capacity.
Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The hitch has its own load rating, but your Subaru Legacy or Outback has a maximum towing capacity set by Subaru. You must respect whichever limit is lower. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for the exact towing capacity.
Periodically check the hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This is especially important before towing. Loose fasteners can compromise safety and may void the warranty.
The Curt 12270 is designed for 1990–2004 Subaru Legacy Sedan and 1995–2004 Outback models only. Verify your vehicle's year and model before purchasing.
No. The hitch uses existing frame holes and factory tie-down loops—no drilling is required.
You must lower (not disconnect) the vapor canister and remove the rearmost exhaust hanger to reposition the muffler. Both are reattached after installation. The vapor hoses do not need to be disconnected.
All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs.
Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Non-trailer loads must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps, or the warranty is voided.
The Curt 12270 is designed for ball mount number D-19 / 45519.
