They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Subaru Forester (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

The CURT Class 3 Hitch, 2" Receiver, Select Subaru Forester Trailer Hitch (Part #BKDK13459) Drilling is not required for installation. Typical installation time is 90+ minutes. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.

Yes. Installation requires removal and reinstallation of the rear bumper cover. The bumper must be removed to access the frame rail mounting points and to allow the hitch to be inserted into position before the bumper is reinstalled.
The installation requires lowering the muffler by removing the two rearmost rubber exhaust hangers to clear the hitch. You must support the exhaust to prevent damage during removal. The heat shield must also be removed and trimmed in the area marked 'M' to provide clearance.
Yes. The installation requires trimming of the rear bumper panel and fascia. You must cut a 3" × 8-1/2" opening and a 2-1/2" × 1-1/2" opening in the center of the bumper fascia to accommodate the hitch and allow clearance for towing.
Required tools are: ratchet, flathead screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, 3/4" socket, 14mm socket, 17mm socket, socket extension (6"), metal snips, and safety glasses. A tools reference guide is available at curtmfg.com/trailer-hitch-installation.
The kit includes: 4 hex bolts M10 × 1.25 × 40mm, 2 flange nuts M10 × 1.25, 4 conical tooth washers 7/16", 2 carriage bolts 1/2" - 13 × 2", 2 round hole washers 2" × 1-1/2" × 1/2", 2 square hole washers 1/4" × 1" × 2.5", 2 flange nuts 1/2" - 13, and 2 fishwire tools 1/2".
The installation difficulty is rated as Difficult. This rating is based on the time and effort involved and may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Open the trunk and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove two retainers on the taillight cover on each side. Unplug the taillight connectors and remove the taillight bracket bolts. Remove and set aside the taillights. This provides access to the fascia panel.
Using a flathead screwdriver, remove seven plastic rivets in the fascia panel and one plastic rivet from the wheel well on each side (some trim levels may have three rivets on each side). Gently pull the fascia up from the rear wheel trim panel, working toward the taillights and along the bottom of the trunk. Once loose all around, slowly pull back the panel and unplug the rear bumper sensor.
The fishwire tool guides the hitch during mounting and prevents loss of bolts or spacers inside the frame rail. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole in the vehicle frame rail and out the access hole. Pass the coiled end through the spacer and thread the bolt into the coil. Kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt, then pull the fishwire, spacer, and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole.
Remove the two rearmost rubber exhaust hangers to lower the muffler and provide clearance for the hitch. Be sure to support the exhaust to prevent damage during removal. If exhaust hanger removal pliers are not available, use a 5/8" open end wrench slid up to the rubber isolator, cradling the hanger rod. Place the flat edge of a pry bar between the wrench and the hanger stop or rod, then rotate the pry bar toward the wrench to remove the isolator. Using lubricant or soapy water on the hanger rod and isolator helps removal.
Using a 10mm socket, remove the four screws securing the heat shield. Remove the heat shield and trim off the area marked 'M' using metal snips. The heat shield is reinstalled after the hitch is mounted and the exhaust hangers are replaced.
No drilling is required. The hitch uses existing frame rail mounting holes and access holes. However, the installation does require trimming of the rear bumper panel and fascia. You must cut a 3" × 8-1/2" opening and a 2-1/2" × 1-1/2" opening in the center of the bumper fascia.
The 1/2" carriage bolts (#4) must be tightened to 110 ft-lbs using a torque wrench and 3/4" socket.
The bumper nuts on each side of the vehicle must be tightened to 33.4 lb-ft using a 14mm socket.
The bumper bolts must be tightened to 47.8 lb-ft using a 14mm socket.
Wear safety glasses at all times while installing this product. Support the exhaust system to prevent damage during removal of the rubber hangers. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The hitch has a gross trailer weight capacity of 3,500 lbs and tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs.
Periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. The manual does not specify an inspection interval; consult your vehicle manufacturer or a qualified technician for recommended inspection frequency.
You need a ratchet, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, torque wrench, 3/4", 14mm, and 17mm sockets, 6" socket extension, metal snips, and safety glasses.
Yes, the rear bumper must be removed to access the frame rail mounting points and insert the hitch, then reinstalled.
Yes. You must trim the rear bumper panel and fascia, cutting a 3" × 8-1/2" opening and a 2-1/2" × 1-1/2" opening in the center of the bumper fascia. You must also trim the heat shield in the area marked 'M'.
Tighten 1/2" carriage bolts to 110 ft-lbs, bumper nuts to 33.4 lb-ft, and bumper bolts to 47.8 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness.
Gross trailer weight capacity is 3,500 lbs and tongue weight capacity is 350 lbs. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
