Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Subaru Ascent (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 5,000 lbs. GTW and 675 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

Yes, CURT part number 13400 is designed for 2019-Present Subaru Ascent SUVs. This is a weight-carrying hitch with a maximum trailer weight capacity of 5,000 lbs and tongue weight capacity of 675 lbs. Always verify your vehicle matches the year and model before purchasing.
The CURT 13400 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 5,000 lbs and a tongue weight of 675 lbs when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating.
Required tools are: ratchet, 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/4" socket, 6" extension, torque wrench, die grinder, safety glasses, and a pry bar. A tape measure and aviation shears are also listed as helpful for installation.
Yes. The first installation step requires you to lower and remove the spare tire following your vehicle owner's manual. The spare tire is reinstalled at the end of the installation after the hitch is secured.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and notes that using proper tools will greatly improve installation quality and reduce time required. If you are hesitant to undertake this task, contact an authorized CURT installer for assistance.
Yes. Installation requires trimming the heat shield to allow access to the front-center mounting holes and enlarging the forward-most mounting hole with a die grinder to allow the 1/2" carriage bolt to fit through. These are permanent modifications to the vehicle.
Fishwire is a technique to route fasteners through frame holes when direct access is limited. For the CURT 13400, you thread the 1/2" carriage bolt and spacer through the forward-most frame hole into the center and rear frame holes on both sides, then reverse fishwire the fasteners back into the forward-most hole. This allows proper alignment of the hitch to the frame.
All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness. This torque specification applies to all six bolts securing the hitch to the frame.
The CURT 13400 includes: 6 bolts (part 10-10272, 1/2-13 UNC, 1-3/4", Grade 8, zinc-plated), 6 spacers (part CM-SP6, 0.250 x 1.00 x 3.00" square hole), 6 nuts (part 20-00062, serrated flange, 1/2-13 UNC, Grade 8, zinc-plated), and 6 pieces of 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
1. Lower and remove the spare tire. 2. Remove the two heat shield mounting bolts (rear, 10mm socket each side). 3. Remove the center front attachment point of the spare tire shield (12mm socket) and remove the shield. 4. Remove frame hole plugs and orange tab on both sides; trim heat shield for access. 5. Enlarge the forward-most mounting hole; fishwire the carriage bolt and spacer through frame holes, then reverse fishwire into the forward-most hole on both sides. 6. Reinstall heat shield, raise hitch into place, secure with 1/2" hardware torqued to 110 ft-lbs, and reinstall spare tire.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Additionally, follow your vehicle owner's manual when lowering and removing the spare tire to avoid injury.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing maintenance is critical for safe towing operation.
