In the world of commercial towing, more is expected. A job cannot be completed if the equipment cannot handle the workload. That is why CURT developed the Commercial Duty class 5 trailer hitch. Constructed from steel and engineered for power, these class 5 hitches are designed to complement the towing power of full-size, commercial pickup trucks, including diesels and chassis cabs. They can easily handle a variety of oversize trailers, including toy and car haulers, livestock trailers, dumper trailers, large flatbed trailers, large boat trailers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). This particular class 5 hitch features a gross trailer weight capacity of 20,000 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity of 2,700 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Ram 2500 and 3500 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). All CURT Commercial Duty class 5 hitches feature a 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" receiver tube opening to accept the strongest of ball mounts and towing accessories. They are perfect for mounting standard ball mounts, pintle mounts, tow hooks and weight distribution hitches as well as winch mounts and cargo carriers. CURT class 5 tow hitches are protected by a co-curing of liquid A-coat and carbide black powder coat finish. They also mount with grade-8 hardware, included with each hitch.

Two people may be required to ease installation. While one person may be able to complete the installation, having a second person can help with positioning the hitch and managing hardware during the process.
The kit includes: 2 x 9/16" fishwire, 6 x 9/16-12 UNC serrated flange nuts (Grade 8), 2 x 9/16-12 UNC hex cap screws (Grade 8), 4 x 9/16-12 UNC carriage bolts 1-3/4" (Grade 8), 2 x .313 x 1.50 x 3.00" spacers (CM-SP74), 2 x .313 x 2.13 x 2.13" spacers (CM-SP68), 2 x 9/16" flat washers, and 6 x .188 x 1.25 x 1.50" spacers (CM-SP8).
All 9/16" hardware must be torqued to 150 lb-ft. This applies to all bolts, hex flange nuts, and hex cap screws used in the installation.
The fishwire technique is used to route 9/16" carriage bolts through access holes in the side of the frame rails and through the bumper beam. The manual references a fishwire technique diagram but does not provide detailed written instructions for the technique itself. Refer to the diagram on the installation walkthrough pages or contact CURT Technical Support at 877-287-8634 for detailed guidance.
If your RAM 2500 or 3500 is equipped with a factory hitch, you may not need to remove it completely. The manual states you may need to loosen the hitch/bumper beam and push it toward the rear of the vehicle to create additional space for the CURT hitch. If you cannot create sufficient space this way, contact CURT Technical Support at 877-287-8634 for guidance.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Raise hitch into position and align holes with frame rails; (2) Slide CM-SP68 spacers through frame rail ends and align with rear mounting holes; (3) Fishwire 9/16" carriage bolts and CM-SP74 spacers through access holes; (4) Fishwire 9/16" carriage bolts through bumper beam and CM-SP68 spacers; (5) Align hitch slots with vehicle tow loops and secure with 9/16" hex flange nuts; (6) Install 9/16" hex bolts, flat washers, and CM-SP8 spacers between tow loops and hitch side plates; (7) Secure hex bolts with CM-SP8 spacers and 9/16" hex flange nuts; (8) Torque all 9/16" hardware to 150 lb-ft.
The CM-SP68 spacers (.313 x 2.13 x 2.13" with 9/16" square holes) are slid through the ends of the frame rails and aligned with the rear mounting holes. They are then used with 9/16" carriage bolts that are fishwired through the bumper beam. Two spacers are included in the kit.
The CM-SP74 spacers (.313 x 1.50 x 3.00" with 9/16" square holes) are used with 9/16" carriage bolts that are fishwired through access holes in the side of the frame rails. Two spacers are included in the kit.
The CM-SP8 spacers (.188 x 1.25 x 1.50" with round holes) are installed between the vehicle's tow loops and the hitch side plates when securing the hitch with 9/16" hex bolts and flat washers. They prevent the tow loops from pulling into the hitch when the bolts are tightened. Six spacers are included in the kit.
After installation, ensure all 9/16" hardware is torqued to 150 lb-ft. Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners remain tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing maintenance is important for safe towing.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. While the CURT 15801 is rated for 20,000 lbs trailer weight and 2,700 lbs tongue weight, your RAM 2500 or 3500 may have a lower manufacturer-specified limit. Always follow the lower of the two limits.
