Be sure to fasten this wire down and away from the battery during the installation process. Reconnect it only after all installation steps are complete and you have reinstalled all items removed during installation.
In Step 3, remove the taillight by pulling it straight back. At the rear of the light are alignment tabs that are pressure-fit into the vehicle body. Loosen these tabs by wiggling them from side to side. Separate the connectors carefully, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Set the taillight aside. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.
Two fasteners secure each taillight. In Step 2, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the two fastener covers, then use a T-15 Torx bit to remove the two fasteners. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.
Fish wire is a tool used to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole. Make sure the wire is long enough to stick out on the other side. Insert it through the blind hole and locate it on the other side. Use tape to secure the harness to the fish wire and pull back up. If the fish wire or harness gets hung up, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it. Fish wire can be made from a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope or string depending on what is needed.
In Step 5, run a fish wire down between the body and the bumper cover on the driver side. From under the vehicle, locate the side of the custom RV harness with the yellow wire. Attach the yellow wire to the fish wire and pull the harness up to the factory harness. In Step 6, once the custom harness reaches the factory harness, connect the mating housings and reconnect the taillight. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 on the passenger side using the green wire of the RV harness.
In Step 7, route the RV harness end with the green wire along the backside of the bumper. Secure any loose wires to the passenger side of the vehicle with the provided cable ties. Keep the wiring away from hot spots, pinch points or moving objects. In Step 13, secure any excess wire so it is not drooping or dangling, but not so tight that it causes unnecessary strain, which could lead to breakage over time.
In Step 8, you must locate a grounding point near the box, such as an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole if no existing fastener is available. The area should be free from rust, dirt, and paint; use an abrasive pad or paper to remove rust and paint. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
If no existing fastener is available for the ground wire, drill a 3/32" pilot hole in the frame of the vehicle near the installation box. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint.
In Step 8, secure the white ground wire with the ring terminal on an existing fastener in the vehicle frame, or use the provided ground screw in a 3/32" pilot hole. The grounding point should be near the installation box and free from rust, dirt, and paint.
In Step 9, route the 4-flat wire above the rear drive line, suspension mounts and the body, securing it with zip ties and keeping it away from hot spots, pinch points or moving objects. In Step 10, route the 4-flat wire along the fuel tank between the tank and the driver-side sub frame to the rear of the front tire. In Step 11, from the driver-side engine compartment, use fish wire to route the 4-flat up between the inner fender and the exterior fender. Locate the end of the fish wire just behind the inner fender/wheel well, attach the 4-flat to the fish wire, and pull to the top side of the engine compartment.
In Step 12, route the 4-flat wire along the driver-side inner fender, using zip ties as needed toward the front of the vehicle. Mount the 4-flat connector right next to the vehicle ground lug on the driver side, behind the headlight.
In Step 13, secure any excess wire so that it is not drooping or dangling, but not so tight that it causes unnecessary strain to the wire, which could lead to breakage over time. After removing slack from the 4-flat wire, tighten any zip ties and add as needed.
After the custom wiring harness is installed, verify that it is functioning by attaching the 4-flat to any vehicle with functioning trailer lights. The taillights on the tow vehicle should function along with the taillights on the towing vehicle. Once the function tests are complete, reinstall the taillight fasteners. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
