CURT offers four 2-speed winch models with the following rated load capacities: model 29520 is rated for 2,000 lbs (907.2 kg), model 29526 for 2,600 lbs (1,179.3 kg), model 29532 for 3,200 lbs (1,451.5 kg), and model 29538 for 3,800 lbs (1,723.7 kg).
The main differences are load capacity and handle type. Models 29520 and 29526 feature a bolt-on handle, while models 29532 and 29538 have a quick-attach handle. Load capacities range from 2,000 lbs (29520) to 3,800 lbs (29538). Model 29538 also includes cable installation procedures, while the other models use strap installation only.
The manual supports both vehicle and winch stand mounting. The winch base must be properly bolted to a structure or vehicle that can hold both the winch and the winch load. If mounting to a winch stand, the stand must be strong enough to support at least 5 times the rated capacity of the winch, and the mounting surface must be equal to or larger than the footprint of the winch frame.
You will need three grade 5, 3/8" diameter bolts, three lock washers, six flat washers, and three nuts. This hardware is not included with the winch and must be supplied separately. For strap installation, a strap bolt and nut are provided with the winch.
Required tools are: ratchet, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, 3/4" socket, 10mm wrench, 15/16" socket, and 10mm socket.
The manual does not mention battery disconnection. This is a mechanical winch with no electrical components, so battery disconnection is not required.
The manual rates the installation difficulty as 'Easy' and does not require professional installation. However, you must have proper tools, a suitable mounting structure rated for at least 5 times the winch capacity, and you should read all instructions thoroughly before beginning.
Place a lock washer and then a flat washer on a grade 5, 3/8" bolt. Insert the bolt through the mounting hole on the winch. Add one more flat washer on the other side and secure with a nut. Repeat this process for all three mounting holes. Ensure the mounting structure can hold both the winch and the winch load.
Prior to operating the winch, secure the handle to the input shaft with the provided lock nut. Models 29520 and 29526 use a bolt-on handle, while models 29532 and 29538 use a quick-attach handle.
Place the provided strap bolt through the sewn loop in the winch strap and secure with the strap bolt nut. The installed winch strap should be rated at 1.5 times the winch's rated capacity, and the hook on the strap should be rated at 1.5 times the strap's rated capacity.
Insert the end of the steel cable through the drum flange hole from the inside of the drum to the outside. Wrap the cable around the drum shaft once, feeding the cable under itself. Secure the cable to the drum by feeding the end through the cable anchor. The cable end should stick through the anchor a minimum of 1 inch. Torque the cable anchor nylon nuts to 2 ft-lbs.
Torque the cable anchor nylon nuts to 2 ft-lbs.
Always leave at least five wraps of cable on the drum. Failure to do so may break the cable connection to the drum and could result in serious injury.
Wear impact safety glasses and heavy-duty work gloves. Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, or long sleeves that can be caught in moving parts. Wear protective hair covering to prevent long hair from becoming caught. Stand back and stay out of the direct line the winch strap is pulling—if the strap slips or breaks, it will whip-lash along this line. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Never use the winch for lifting equipment or humans. Always maintain a firm grip on the winch handle and do not release it until the ratchet pawl is properly engaged.
No. Do not use any attachments to extend the length of the winch strap.
No. Do not apply a load to the winch when the winch strap is fully extended. The strap anchor on the winch is not capable of holding the maximum rated load capacity.
When loading a boat onto a trailer without keel or side hull rollers, make sure the trailer is submerged in the water when the boat is loaded by the winch. Attempting to drag the boat onto the trailer while on land can cause winch failure and possibly personal injury and property damage.
After moving an object with the winch, secure the object. Do not rely on the winch to hold an object for an extended period of time.
Verify that the winch is properly secured to the winch mount and the winch handle is properly secured to the winch input shaft. Check for damaged parts and any other conditions that may affect operation. Carefully check that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Replace or repair damaged or worn parts immediately.
Check the strap before each use for signs of wear. If the strap shows signs of wear, replace it immediately. Always verify the strap/cable hook is properly engaged to the load prior to operating the winch.
Check the strap and cable for wear and replace damaged strap or cable immediately. Apply oil to the input shaft, bushings, and drum hub. Grease all gears regularly. Periodic inspection of your product should be performed to ensure all hardware and components remain secure.
The manual does not specify vehicle compatibility. Contact CURT product support at 877-287-8634 or visit curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle or mounting application.
No. You must supply three grade 5, 3/8" diameter bolts, three lock washers, six flat washers, and three nuts separately. The strap bolt and handle lock nut are provided.
No. The installation is rated as 'Easy' and does not require professional installation, but you must have proper tools and a mounting structure rated for at least 5 times the winch capacity.
The manual does not mention drilling. The winch mounts using existing holes on the winch base and mounting structure.
The manual does not specify a torque value for the winch base mounting bolts. Contact CURT product support at 877-287-8634 for the correct torque specification.
No. Never use a hand winch for lifting equipment or humans. The winch is designed only for pulling loads horizontally.
Periodic inspection should be performed to ensure all hardware and components remain secure. Check the strap before each use for wear. The manual does not specify maintenance intervals for oil and grease application—contact CURT product support at 877-287-8634 for detailed maintenance schedules.
If you do not hear a loud clicking noise, the ratchet is not securing the load. Do not let go of the handle until the load has been secured. Always maintain a firm grip on the winch handle and do not release it until the ratchet pawl is properly engaged. Release the handle slowly to be sure the ratchet lever is fully supporting the load.
Never let go of the handle prior to engaging the ratchet lever, as this may cause the handle to spin dangerously. Always maintain a firm grip on the handle and do not release it until the ratchet pawl is properly engaged.
