The REESE 5th Airborne pin box makes towing a fifth wheel trailer smoother and easier than ever before. This premium product replaces the standard pin box on nearly any fifth wheel and bolts in place onto a set of wings on the front of the trailer. The pin boxs king pin connects to the fifth wheel hitch in the bed of your truck providing a secure connection when youre towing. Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The 5th Airborne (part number 94420) is a 20,000 lbs rated 5th wheel hitch pin box that mounts inside existing mounting wing sets on 5th wheel hitches. It features an air suspension system and is designed to connect a 5th wheel trailer to a pickup truck. The product has a maximum pin weight rating of 5,000 lbs.
The 5th Airborne kit includes the pin box itself and fastener kit 94621F containing: 8 hex bolts (GR8, 5/8"-11x2.00"), 8 conical washers (5/8"), 8 flat washers (5/8"), and 8 hex nuts (GR8, 5/8"-11). All fasteners are Grade 8 hardware.
The manual shows compatibility with Lippert 1716, Lippert Rhino, and Lippert 1621 wing sets. The Lippert 1716 requires spacer kit P/N 68200 (not included). The Lippert Rhino has a maximum load of 20,000 lbs at its bolt hole application. The Lippert 1621 offers 2 inches of adjustment with 2 mounting positions. Yes. The Lippert 1716 standard mounting position requires spacer kit P/N 68200, which is not included with the 5th Airborne. You must purchase this separately. Consult the 68200 instructions when installing on a Lippert 1716.

The 5th Airborne has a gross trailer weight rating of 20,000 lbs and a maximum pin weight (kingpin vertical weight) of 5,000 lbs. The trailer and its contents together must not exceed the truck, hitch, and/or trailer tow ratings, whichever is lowest.
The maximum pin weight (kingpin vertical weight) is 5,000 lbs for part number 94420. Pin weight is the downward force exerted on the 5th wheel head by the pinbox. Measure pin weight with the fully loaded trailer on a level surface and the pinbox at normal towing height using a vehicle scale.
The 5th Airborne is designed for a maximum of 25% of the gross trailer weight on the kingpin (vertical pin weight). This means 75% of the gross trailer weight should be distributed behind the kingpin. For example, on a 20,000 lb trailer, the pin weight should not exceed 5,000 lbs.
Required tools include: 15/16" socket, 15/16" wrench, torque wrench capable of reaching 250 ft-lbs, lithium grease, air compressor, and equipment for lifting approximately 160 lbs. Two people are recommended for air fill operations.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Contact Reese technical service at 1-800-632-3290 for clarification on this step.
For a 20K application, install at least 4 bolts per side (2 front row and 2 rear row) as a minimum. Horizon Global recommends using at least the same number of bolts that were used to attach the original pin box to the mounting wing set. All bolts must be torqued to the proper value: 210 ft-lbs for 5/8" Grade 8 bolts.
Install the front bolts first, as this may ease alignment. Maintain adequate support under the 5th Airborne arm until at least 2 bolts per side are installed. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death. After installation, torque all bolts to 210 ft-lbs for 5/8" Grade 8 bolts.
5/8" Grade 8 bolts must be torqued to 210 ft-lbs. This applies to the fastener kit 94621F included with the 5th Airborne.
Torque specifications are: 5/8" Grade 5 bolts = 150 ft-lbs; 5/8" Grade 8 bolts = 210 ft-lbs; 3/4" Grade 5 bolts = 275 ft-lbs. The 5th Airborne fastener kit includes Grade 8 bolts, which should be torqued to 210 ft-lbs.
From outside to inside: install the 5/8" Grade 8 bolt first, then the 5/8" flat washer on the outside of the wing. On the inside of the pin box, install the 5/8" conical washer (with teeth against the inside of the pin box) and the 5/8-11 Grade 8 nut. The conical washer has a crowned shape and teeth that must face the pin box. Torque all bolts to 210 ft-lbs.
Yes. Before removing the original pin box, note the number of bolts used to attach it to the mounting wing set. Horizon Global recommends using at least the same number of bolts upon installation. Remove the existing pin box carefully, taking care to remove any wiring and/or breakaway switch if attached. The breakaway switch must be reinstalled after the 5th Airborne installation is complete.
The bottom of the 5th Airborne sidewinder should be positioned 1/2 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the 5th Airborne should contact the skid plate ramp. If the kingpin is too high, it may come to rest on top of closed jaws or not completely inside the jaw, which could result in trailer separation.
Using trailer jacks, adjust the trailer height following the directions in the trailer manual so that the bottom of the trailer pin box is 1/2 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate. This ensures proper kingpin height and alignment during hitching.
Place wheel chocks (blocks) firmly against the front and rear of each trailer tire to prevent forward or rearward motion. Do not remove blocks until all hitching steps and the pull test are completed. Lower the tailgate if necessary and monitor clearance between the lowered tailgate and trailer, as some truck and trailer combinations have little or no clearance. Ensure the tow vehicle and trailer are on level ground with the vehicle in park and park brake applied.
A minimum clearance of 2 ft between the bumper and trailer (measured at the same height) is recommended. If clearance is less than 2 ft, check clearances after installation by making a slow turn in a controlled driving environment (closed parking lot or grass field) with an observer watching for interference.
Allow approximately 6 inches of clearance between the top of the bedside and the underside of the front of the trailer for pitch and yaw of the trailer. For off-road use, monitor closely and allow more clearance between pickup bedsides and trailer.
If the vehicle and/or trailer has any added vanity accessories (fairings, air dams, ground effects, bed rails, etc.), additional dimensioning and clearance checks must be made. Horizon Global is not responsible for damage incurred due to disregarding these clearance checks.
Yes. If the breakaway switch was attached to the original pin box and removed during installation, it must be reinstalled after the 5th Airborne installation is complete.
The 5th Airborne pin box has multiple pinch points that can cause serious injury. Keep fingers and all other body parts away from any of the listed pinch points. Placing a body part or object anywhere except the air inflation valve could cause damage or serious injury. The kingpin may also have sharp edges.
Before filling the air system, ensure: (1) you are 100% coupled with the 5th wheel latched and locked; (2) the trailer and tow vehicle are on level ground with the vehicle in park and park brake applied; (3) the tow vehicle and trailer are secured with wheel chocks positioned firmly against front and rear of each tire to prevent forward or rearward motion. Do not remove blocks until all air fill steps are completed.
Two people are recommended. One person should be in the truck filling the air valve (position 1 on the 5th Airborne). The second person should stand outside the truck watching the Air Inflation Visual Indicator (position 2) to monitor the fill level. Horizon Global advises against filling the air system with only one person.
The air bag fill valve inlet is located on the 5th Airborne pin box. One person fills the pinbox at this inlet while a second person watches the Air Inflation Visual Indicator to monitor the fill level. The air inflation indicator may rotate up to 7 degrees in either direction without affecting functionality.
No. Do not insert fingers or any body parts into the air inflation indicator. Do not put anything into the visual indicator. Doing so may result in serious injury.
With the trailer hitched to the truck, 5th wheel hitch latched and locked, and landing gear/jacks retracted, add air to the air bag fill valve inlet. One person fills the pinbox while a second person watches the Air Inflation Visual Indicator until it reaches the nominal position. Then recheck the indicator and inflate to your desired ride comfort position. Perform all safety steps on page 12 before adjusting with the trailer loaded.
Before each trip: (1) check the condition of all towing equipment and keep it in proper working condition; (2) ensure all bolts and nuts are properly tightened (refer to page 7 for proper bolt torque values of 210 ft-lbs for 5/8" Grade 8 bolts); (3) check that the airbag pressure is set for your vehicle and loaded trailer; (4) ensure the breakaway cable is secured to the 5th Airborne pinbox. Note: the airbag can lose pressure with temperature changes when not in use, so screw the cap back on the air bag fill valve to prevent air leakage.
Maintenance includes: (1) inspect the 5th Airborne for damage or excessive wear; (2) wipe the kingpin and bottom surface clean; (3) apply new white lithium grease to the kingpin and 5th wheel hitch head for ease of hitching/unhitching and to lessen wear and minimize noise; (4) once per season, fully deflate the airbag and then refill. Load the trailer heavier in the front, but not greater than the pin weight rating (5,000 lbs maximum). The truck should be level when the trailer is attached and loaded per the trailer manufacturer's pin weight recommendations.
The kingpin and jaw should be smooth, clean, and lightly lubricated. Check the condition of the kingpin and jaw every time you tow. Re-check at fuel and rest stops. The kingpin may develop sharp edges after usage, so be careful when wiping old grease from it.
Connect safety chains properly every time you tow. Leave only enough slack to permit full turning. Too much slack may prevent chains from maintaining control if other connections separate. Ensure safety chains are securely mounted and free from obstructions. Chains should be free of snags through the full turning radius.
