The REESE Sidewinder pin box is the ideal choice for those who want to tow with a short bed truck. This premium product is specifically designed to eliminate issues with turning and clearance when towing with a shorter pickup. Its patented design allows towers to make up to 90-plus degree turns without having to leave the cab of the truck. The Sidewinder connects to your trailer and works by locking the trailer king pin to the fifth wheel hitch which moves the pivot point of the trailer a whopping 22 inches rearward to allow for increased turning clearance. The system also tracks automatically, allowing for tighter turns when towing forward or moving in reverse, keeping the load centered over the axles, and eliminating the need for a fifth wheel slider system. The pivoting design of this elite pin box lets towers hook up to their fifth wheel hitch at nearly any angle while increasing stability and strength to support heavier loads. Like the REESE goosebox and 5th Airborne, the REESE Sidewinder is tested to exceed all SAE standards, has 20,000 pounds capacity, and fits several Lippert trailer configurations when used with the included universal wedge. (Custom wedge kits sold separately.) The unit also ships preassembled to save on installation time and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty, making it the ultimate short bed towing solution.

Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

The 20K Sidewinder (part number 69220) is a 5th wheel pinbox with a 20,000 lbs gross trailer weight rating and 5,000 lbs maximum pin weight capacity. It features a wedge system that allows for tighter fitment with compatible 5th wheel hitches and comes with a Reese Wedge (68202) for proper coupling. The product includes a conventional pinbox with lock-out bolts and can be used with or without the wedge installed, but not both simultaneously.
The 20K Sidewinder is compatible with Reese Elite Series, Reese M-Series, Reese Pro Series Slide Jaw, and Reese Pro Series Dual Jaw hitches. It also works with Lippert wing sets including the 1716 (with spacer kit P/N 68200), 1621, Rhino, and Turning Point models. For compatibility with other hitch models, visit https://qr.towingproducts.net or call Technical Service at 1-800-632-3290. Do not use with Curt A20 hitches.
Yes, the 20K Sidewinder is compatible with Lippert 1716 wing sets, which offer two mounting positions providing 2½ inches of adjustment. However, spacer kit P/N 68200 is required for this application. The hitch uses GR8 5/8" bolts for mounting.
The 20K Sidewinder has a maximum gross trailer weight rating of 20,000 lbs and a maximum pin weight (kingpin vertical weight) of 5,000 lbs. However, the towing vehicle's manufacturer-rated towing capacity must equal or exceed the gross trailer weight, and the lowest rating among the tow vehicle, hitch, and trailer must not be exceeded. The Sidewinder is designed for a maximum of 25% of gross trailer weight on the kingpin.
No. The manual explicitly states: "Do not tow one trailer behind another (Tandem Towing)." Tandem towing may cause loss of control and is not permitted with this product.
Allow approximately 6 inches of clearance between the top of the truck bed sides and the underside of the front of the trailer for pitch and yaw during towing. For off-road use, monitor closely and allow more clearance. Additionally, maintain a minimum of 2 feet clearance between the truck bumper and trailer (measured at the same height). If clearance is less than 2 feet, verify clearances by making a slow test turn in a controlled environment with an observer.
Measure distance "A" (from the center of the Sidewinder pivot to the farthest point on the trailer front cap) and distance "X" (from the kingpin to the rear of the truck cab). If X + 24 inches is greater than A, towing up to 90 degrees or more is possible. If measurements are close to these numbers, recheck clearances. If your vehicle or trailer has added accessories like fairings, air dams, or bed rails, additional dimensioning and clearance checks must be made.
Required tools include: 1-1/8" thin-walled socket, 15/16" socket, 15/16" wrench, torque wrench capable of 250 ft-lbs, lithium grease, and equipment for lifting approximately 250 lbs. A 2-1/4" socket is also needed for maintenance of the castle nut.
The fastener kit 61300F includes: 8 hex bolts (GR8, 5/8"-11x2.00"), 8 conical washers (5/8"), 8 flat washers (5/8"), and 8 hex nuts (GR8, 5/8"-11). These fasteners are used to attach the wing sets to the pinbox.
Yes. Spacer kit P/N 68200 is required for use with Lippert 1716 wing sets, which offer two mounting positions providing 2½ inches of adjustment.
The bottom of the trailer pinbox should be positioned ½ to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate before hitching. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the Sidewinder should contact the skid plate ramp. If the pinbox is positioned above the hitch skid plate, the kingpin may rest on top of the closed jaws or not fully enter the jaw, which could result in trailer separation.
Yes. The Sidewinder comes from the factory with lock-out bolts (two ¾" Grade 8 bolts) installed and the wedge in the storage position. If the wedge and lock-out bolts are used simultaneously, or if one is used without the other, damage to your trailer and/or truck may occur. Ensure lock-out bolts have been removed if using the Sidewinder with the wedge installed.
The 20K Sidewinder comes with the Reese Wedge (68202), which has two ends: one with a single weld and one with two welds. The weld end that corresponds with your specific 5th wheel hitch application must face the kingpin when installed for proper fitment and function. Refer to page 14 of the manual for wedge orientation diagrams for Reese Elite Series, M-Series, Pro Series Slide Jaw, and Pro Series Dual Jaw hitches. For other wedge applications, visit https://qr.towingproducts.net or call Technical Service at 1-800-632-3290.
No. Do not use a lube plate as it will affect the wedge fit and could cause 5th wheel head damage.
The wing set bolts (5/8"-11x2.00" Grade 8 bolts) must be torqued to 210 ft-lbs. These bolts are installed from the outside of the wing with flat washers, while conical lock washers and nuts are installed on the inside of the pinbox.
The bolts that attach the wedge to the wedge carrier must be torqued to 200 ft-lbs (271 Nm).
The castle nut should be torqued to 80 ft-lbs initially. However, some towing setups may require higher torque due to vehicle/trailer dynamics. If a tighter turret is needed, increase torque in increments of 10 ft-lbs, but do not exceed 150 ft-lbs. Exceeding 150 ft-lbs will damage the bearing and/or other rotational components and void the warranty. After tightening, ensure the cotter pin is installed.
1. Remove the wedge from storage and attach to the wedge carrier; torque bolts to 200 ft-lbs. 2. Move the wedge to the rearmost position by rotating the handle counter-clockwise (towards passenger side) to ensure kingpin engagement. 3. Place blocks firmly against front and rear of each trailer tire. 4. Using trailer jacks, adjust trailer height so the bottom of the pinbox is ½ to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate. 5. Follow your hitch manufacturer's instructions for safe hook-up, ensuring the kingpin is aligned into the hitch funnel and the hitch centerline aligns with the turret centerline. 6. Once the 5th wheel is connected, lock the hitch jaw per manufacturer's instructions. 7. Tighten wedge fitment by scrolling the handle towards the driver side (hand tighten only). 8. Once tight, attach the pin into the handle to secure the wedge. 9. Perform the pull test to verify proper hitching.
1. Firmly block trailer wheels. 2. Ensure trailer landing gear is resting on firm ground and supporting trailer weight. 3. Truck stationary with emergency brake on. 4. Ensure no one is between truck and trailer, return to the cab, and release the truck's emergency brake. Apply trailer brakes. 5. Try to pull the trailer slowly forward with the truck. If properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer is not properly hitched, it will separate from the hitch and the truck will move forward, leaving the trailer behind. 6. After successfully completing these steps, fully raise the trailer landing gear. 7. Check and inspect all electrical circuits for proper operation (clearance lights, turn signals, stop lights, etc.). 8. Remove and store all trailer wheel blocks.
Once the 5th wheel is connected to the kingpin and the hitch jaw is locked, tighten the wedge fitment by scrolling the handle underneath the Sidewinder towards the driver side. Hand tighten only until the wedge is fully inserted into the funnel opening. Then attach the pin into the handle to secure the wedge in place. It is expected that there may be up to a 1/16" gap per side between the 5th wheel head and the wedge.
1. Ensure truck is in park with emergency brake on. 2. Place blocks firmly against front and rear of each trailer tire. 3. Lower trailer landing gear until feet are resting on firm ground. 4. Lower truck tailgate. 5. Disconnect power cable and breakaway switch cable. 6. Remove bail pin from the 5th wheel hitch handle. 7. Pull hitch handle out completely until it latches in open position so the kingpin is no longer grasped by the hitch jaws. If the handle does not pull out, loosen the wedge fitment, and if pressure persists, back the truck up slightly, reset the emergency brake, then pull the handle out. 8. After ensuring no one is standing between truck and trailer or in front of the truck, drive the truck slowly away from the trailer. 9. Keep wheel blocks in place to prevent unexpected trailer movement.
Before or after each trip, wipe the kingpin and wedge clean and apply white lithium grease to each for ease of hitching and unhitching, to lessen wear, and to minimize noise. At least once per season, lubricate the wedge screw with white lithium grease by working the wedge through its entire travel to extend product longevity.
At least once per season, use white lithium grease to lubricate the pivot shaft (grease zerk in pivot shaft and/or bearing housing) to allow for smooth function of the turret.
The maximum pin weight (kingpin vertical weight) is 5,000 lbs for part number 69220. The Sidewinder is designed for a maximum of 25% of gross trailer weight on the kingpin. Pin weight should be measured with the fully loaded trailer on a level surface and the pinbox at normal towing height.
Use E-rated tires on both the tow vehicle and trailer. Ensure tires are properly inflated on both the truck and trailer per manufacturer's recommendations. Check tire inflation often.
Load the trailer heavier in the front but not greater than the tongue weight rating of the hitch. Place heavy objects on the floor ahead of the axle and balance the load side-to-side. Secure the load to prevent shifting. Never load the trailer rear-heavy, as this can cause instability. The truck and trailer should be loaded evenly and must not exceed the manufacturer's rating.
No. Never allow people in the trailer while towing, under any circumstances.
Stop immediately and make a thorough inspection of the entire towing system. Correct any problems before resuming travel. Severe bumps can damage the towing vehicle, hitch, and trailer, so drive slowly on rough roads.
Avoid putting any part of your body under the trailer or between the truck and trailer, as unexpected or accidental movement can cause serious injury or death. If you must work in these areas, you must perform all of the following steps: (1) Check that the truck transmission is in park, (2) Check that the emergency brake is set, (3) Block in front of and behind all trailer tires, and (4) Check that the trailer landing gear is resting on firm ground.
In some applications with ½ ton trucks, especially when the trailer is at a higher weight capacity of the tow vehicle, the system may feel unstable while towing. In this case, ensure the trailer is properly loaded. It is also important to have E-rated tires. If the truck is equipped with airbags, they should not be filled above minimum pressure.
Before each trip, check the kingpin, jaw, chains, and all other connections. Recheck at fuel and rest stops. Ensure all coupling surfaces are clean of dirt and debris and lightly greased. Verify that the breakaway switch is securely mounted and free from obstructions, and that the breakaway battery is fully charged. Ensure safety chains (if equipped) are securely mounted and free from obstructions. Make sure all trailer lights, turn signals, electric brakes, and breakaway switch connections are functioning properly before getting on the road.
The height of the hitch and pinbox should be adjusted so the trailer is approximately level as it is towed. The truck should be level when the trailer is attached and loaded per the trailer manufacturer's pin weight specifications. This ensures proper weight distribution and handling.
The 20K Sidewinder is compatible with Reese Elite Series, M-Series, Pro Series Slide Jaw, and Pro Series Dual Jaw hitches. For compatibility with other Reese models or non-Reese hitches, visit https://qr.towingproducts.net or call 1-800-632-3290. Do not use with Curt A20 hitches.
Torque the 5/8"-11x2.00" Grade 8 bolts to 210 ft-lbs. The wedge attachment bolts should be torqued to 200 ft-lbs (271 Nm).
No. Do not use a lube plate as it will affect wedge fit and could cause 5th wheel head damage.
Yes. The Sidewinder comes with lock-out bolts installed. If the wedge and lock-out bolts are used at the same time, damage may occur. Remove the lock-out bolts if using the Sidewinder with the wedge installed.
Before or after each trip, wipe the kingpin and wedge clean and apply white lithium grease. At least once per season, lubricate the wedge screw and pivot shaft with white lithium grease.
Maintain a minimum of 2 feet clearance between the truck bumper and trailer (measured at the same height). Allow approximately 6 inches clearance between the top of the truck bed sides and the underside of the trailer front. For off-road use, allow more clearance.
This indicates the trailer pinbox was positioned too high relative to the hitch skid plate during hitching. The bottom of the trailer pinbox should be ½ to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate before hitching. If the kingpin rests on top of the closed jaws or does not fully enter the jaw, the trailer may separate from the hitch, which could result in death or serious injury. Reposition the trailer and rehitch correctly.
If the trailer separates during the pull test, the trailer was not properly hitched. However, if the previous steps were followed correctly (trailer wheels blocked, landing gear on firm ground, pinbox at correct height), the trailer will not drop or fall. Reposition the trailer so the pinbox is ½ to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate and rehitch following all steps in order.
In some applications with ½ ton trucks, especially when the trailer is at a higher weight capacity of the tow vehicle, the system may feel unstable. This is typically caused by improper trailer loading or incorrect tire inflation. Ensure the trailer is properly loaded (heavier in front, not exceeding tongue weight rating) and use E-rated tires properly inflated per manufacturer recommendations. If the truck is equipped with airbags, ensure they are not filled above minimum pressure.
