Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. Verify hole alignment. 8. Enlarge 1/8" holes to 9/16" (except row 3 center). 9. Drill and enlarge row 3 center bolt hole (1-1/8" in bed, 9/16" in cross member). 10. Install tube spacer in row 3 center location. 11. Reposition rear rail. 12. Install rear rail attachment bolts with spacers and isolators. 13. Position second rail with hitch product. 14. Mark and drill front rail holes. 15. Repeat steps 6-8 for front rail. 16. Install front rail attachment bolts. 17. Torque all hardware (bed rails to brackets first, then brackets to frame). 18. Reinstall wheel well liners and spare tire.
Galvanic isolator strips must be installed on all surfaces where bare steel components contact the aluminum truck bed. Place 1-1/4 x 48 strips (14) on the bottom surface of each rail before positioning. Install 1-1/4 x 8 strips (11) and 1-1/4 x 4 strips (12) on the frame brackets (18 and 19). Place galvanic isolator patches (13) on U-shaped spacers and spacer blocks. On mounting brackets, place isolator strips on the ends of the bent tabs that contact the truck bed, folding them around the tab end with at least 3/4" of strip on the top side of the bracket. This prevents corrosion between steel and aluminum over the product's life.
1. Place a 5/8" flat washer (8) over each 5/8-11 x 4-1/4" hex head bolt (6). 2. Position the frame brackets over the frame mounting holes. 3. Route the 5/8-11 x 4-1/4" hex bolt through the frame bracket and vehicle frame from the outside of the frame to the inside. 4. Install the 5/8 conical washer (9) and then the 5/8-11 nut (7) over the bolt. 5. Hand tighten initially. 6. Verify that the 1/8" drilled holes align with the slots of the frame brackets. If they do not align, adjust the brackets as needed. If alignment cannot be achieved, restart the installation from step 4 (drilling). Once aligned, remove the rails and brackets to proceed with enlarging holes.
For row 3 outer bolts: use 1/2-13 x 2 hex head bolts (1) on top of the rail with a galvanic isolator patch (13), 1/2 x 1-1/2 x 2-1/4 spacer block (3), and a nut handle (2). For row 3 center bolt (through bed cross member): route a 1/2-13 x 4-1/2 carriage bolt (21) through the rail and tube spacer (20), secure with a 1/4 x 1-1/2 x 3 spacer (5), 1/2 conical washer (16), and 1/2-13 nut (15). For row 4 center bolt: route a 1/2-13 x 2 carriage bolt (17) through the rail and bed with a 1/2 x 1-1/2 x 2-1/4 spacer (3) between rail and bed, secure with a 1/4 x 1-1/2 x 3 spacer (5), 1/2 conical washer (16), and 1/2-13 nut (15). Ensure galvanic isolator patches are installed on all spacers. Attach 1/2" conical washers (16) and hex nuts (15) on the bottom side of the frame brackets and tighten snug to keep the rail from moving.
Place the unassembled 5th wheel legs/slider/goose into the already installed rear mounting rail. Position the second mounting rail with the legs/slider/goose by inserting the tabs into the mounting rail and pushing the mounting rail tight towards the other mounting rail. Ensure that the mounting rail is centered between the weld seams on the length of the truck box floor. This will position the mounting rail in the correct location and ensure that the 5th wheel will have a snug fit to the truck. If more than one hitch product will be used with the rails, both should be used at the same time to align the second rail, ensuring that one product does not compromise the fit of the other.
Under no circumstances do we recommend exceeding the towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended vehicle towing capacity. Always measure the truck and trailer before installing the hitch to ensure there is clearance at the cab and at the bumper to allow for turns.
Contact between any bare steel components (frame mounting brackets, U-shaped spacers, mounting rails) and bare aluminum bed causes corrosion over the product's life. The galvanic isolator strips and patches provide a protective layer that prevents this corrosion. It is critical that the paint is not damaged on the brackets, and any areas where holes were drilled through the bed must be repainted.
After all hardware is torqued, reinstall the inner plastic wheel well liner and spare tire if they were removed. Verify that all bolts are torqued to specification (75 ft-lbs for 1/2" Grade 5 hardware, 150 ft-lbs for 5/8" Grade 5 hardware), with bed mounting rails torqued to frame brackets first, then frame brackets to the truck frame. Ensure all galvanic isolator strips and patches are properly installed. Verify that the mounting rails are centered between the weld seams on the truck box floor.
