Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

Introducing the REESE® M5 Fifth Wheel Hitch
The M5 GM LEG (part number 30889) is a support leg assembly for a 5th wheel hitch system. It attaches to the M5 Center Section and provides vertical support and adjustment for the hitch assembly on GM trucks. The legs come pre-assembled, adjusted, and ready to install, and offer 4 inches of vertical adjustment to accommodate different truck bed heights.
Yes. The M5 GM LEG (30889) is designed to work with the M5 Head and M5 Center Section, which are sold separately. The leg assembly attaches to the center section, and the head attaches to the center section. You must obtain the head and center section instructions separately to complete the full hitch installation.
A minimum of 6 inches of clearance must be maintained between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. You must select the correct center section mounting holes to ensure this clearance is achieved. Refer to the Guidelines for Matching Hitch, Truck, and Trailer section in the M5 Head and Center Section instruction sheet for detailed guidance.
Three tools are required: an M24 socket, pliers, and a torque wrench. The torque wrench is essential because the M16 hex-head bolts must be tightened to exactly 220 ft-lb of torque during final installation and checked every 1,000 miles.
The kit includes: 1 M5 GM Leg assembly, 4 M16 x 40mm hex-head bolts (Class 10.9), 4 conical washers (5/8 inch), 4 T-pin locking handles, 4 lynch pin handle locks, 4 castle nuts (M5 GM), 8 lynch pins (M5 GM Leg), 4 T-pins (GM M5), and 4 T-bushings (GM M5). Additional cotter pins are provided for convenience.
Yes. The M5 GM LEG arrives pre-assembled, adjusted, and ready to install. You do not need to assemble the leg itself before attaching it to the center section.
Yes. The legs must be attached at the same height on both sides of the unit. This ensures proper weight distribution and hitch stability. The unit has 4 inches of vertical adjustment to allow you to select the correct mounting holes for your specific truck and trailer combination.
Using the four M16 x 40mm hex-head bolts, attach the legs to the center section structure by threading the bolts from the inside of the center section into the threaded portion of the legs. Finger tighten the bolts initially until final adjustments are made. Ensure the flanges on the leg structure are completely seated in the corresponding holes of the center section before final tightening.
When positioning the legs over the pucks, the handles must be in the OPEN position. Once the unit is placed in the pucks, rotate the handles back to the CLOSED position and insert the lynch pins into each foot to prevent the handles from opening during operation.
If a handle appears too loose and rattles or cannot close fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle and is able to close. Finger tighten the castle nut only—do not use tools. Once adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close the loop over the nut to hold it in place. Additional cotter pins are provided in the hardware kit.
Each M16 hex-head bolt that connects the legs to the center section must be tightened to 220 ft-lb of torque. This is done after the T-pin handles are locked and the T-pins are securely held in the truck bed structure. The bolts must be checked and re-torqued to 220 ft-lb every 1,000 miles.
After tightening each M16 hex-head bolt to 220 ft-lb of torque, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch. This confirms that the legs are securely fastened and the assembly is stable.
Before any trip, verify that: (1) lynch pins, foot bracket, and castle nut are not damaged and are securely locked; (2) lynch pins are securely locked in place with little to no vertical play; and (3) the lynch pin is in the properly closed position (do not reverse the loop to the other side of the pin). Refer to the maintenance section images for proper lynch pin orientation.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lb. This regular inspection helps maintain the integrity and safety of the hitch assembly.
Failure to follow installation and hitch-up instructions may cause property loss, serious injury, or death. Additionally, under no circumstances should you exceed the towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended vehicle towing and load capacity. Always read all instructions before starting installation or use.

The manual does not mention drilling, cutting, or any modifications to the truck or center section. Installation uses existing threaded holes in the center section and mounting holes on the truck bed.
The manual does not specify whether professional installation is required or recommended. The instructions are written for a general audience and do not require specialized equipment beyond an M24 socket, pliers, and a torque wrench.
The manual does not mention battery disconnection. No electrical work is involved in installing the M5 GM LEG.
The castle nut should be finger-tightened only—do not use tools. Adjust it by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle and is able to close fully.
The unit has 4 inches of vertical adjustment, allowing you to select the correct center section mounting holes to achieve the required 6-inch minimum clearance between the truck bed rail and trailer bottom.
Check and retorque the M16 hex-head bolts to 220 ft-lb every 1,000 miles to maintain hitch integrity.
Remove the lynch pin from the loose handle. Using your hand only, adjust the castle nut to a position where the handle does not rattle and is able to close fully. Do not use tools on the castle nut. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close the loop over the nut to hold it in place.
Remove the lynch pin from the tight handle. Using your hand only, adjust the castle nut to a position where the handle is able to close fully without rattling. Do not use tools on the castle nut. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close the loop over the nut to hold it in place.
Verify that each M16 hex-head bolt is tightened to 220 ft-lb of torque. Use a torque wrench to check all four bolts. If any bolt is loose, tighten it to the correct specification. Also verify that all lynch pins are securely locked in place with little to no vertical play, and that the foot bracket and castle nut are not damaged.
Tighten each M16 hex-head bolt to 220 ft-lb of torque using a torque wrench. Verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side. Continue to check the bolts every 1,000 miles to prevent future loosening.
