Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

The manual confirms Ford/GM multi-fit compatibility. The hitch requires M5 mounting legs sold separately. For specific vehicle fitment beyond Ford/GM, consult the leg assembly instructions or contact the manufacturer. The center section can be rotated 180 degrees to increase cab clearance by 1-1/2", but this is not possible with RAM vehicles.
The hitch is rated for 14,000 lbs towing capacity with a maximum pin weight of 2,800 lbs. The manual warns: do not exceed your towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
An M13 wrench is required for assembly. A grease gun with a needle adapter is recommended for maintenance. The manual notes that a typical grease needle is generally available at auto parts stores.
Yes. The M5 mounting legs are sold separately. Fasteners and assembly instructions for the legs are included with the leg unit, not with the head and center section.
The unit must be set to have a minimum of 6" clearance between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The center section has 4 possible attachment locations with 4.05" of overall adjustment.
When the head springs are installed properly (pointing up towards the truck cab after rotation), they must be tightened to 7-8 ft-lbs. The bolt is 1/4" and requires a 7/16" socket.
Before the pull test: ensure trailer wheels are firmly blocked with chocks, trailer landing gears are firmly on the ground supporting trailer weight, trailer brake is on, and no one is between the truck and trailer. Then try to pull the trailer slowly forward. If properly hitched, the trailer will not separate.
Apply grease to: (A) the skid plate surface; (B) the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer; (C) via the grease fitting on top of the unit using a grease needle; (D) spray white lithium grease on internal mechanisms and rotate the handle to distribute. Plastic lube plates up to 3/16" thick can be used instead of grease on the skid plate. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended. The head comes pre-greased.
The package includes: 1 Assembly Head Unit, 1 Handle, 2 ½" Pull Pins, 2 Spring Clips, 2 M8 Carriage Bolts, 2 M8 Lock Washers, 2 M8 Nuts, and 1 Assembly Center Section. Bolts and washers for leg attachment are supplied separately with the leg unit.
Slide the tube over the bar as shown in the manual figure 2, then securely tighten with 2 M8 carriage bolts, 2 M8 lock washers, and 2 M8 nuts using an M13 wrench. The handle should be snug when complete.
1. Apply grease per the maintenance instructions (page 3, figure 9). 2. Place the head unit on top of the center section, avoiding pinch points. 3. Insert the pull pin as shown in figure 6 and secure with spring clips on both sides. 4. Inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to confirm clips are assembled correctly (figure 7).
Ready-to-Receive Position: handle is pulled out so holes do not align for bail pin, handle is easily movable towards cab and returns to default position when released, indicator shows RED. Locked Position: handle is positioned so holes align for bail pin insertion, indicator shows GREEN only. Unhitching Position: handle is in the position shown in figure 12, indicator shows RED. If tension exists between truck and trailer during unhitching, the handle may start to return to ready-to-receive position but the trailer will still uncouple.
The bottom of the pin box must be aligned with the top of the skid plate ramp ±1 inch. This is the contact zone for proper coupling. Refer to the leg installation instructions for information on how to properly set the height of your 5th wheel hitch.
1. Ensure truck and trailer are in position: lower tailgate if necessary, place blocks/chocks firmly against each trailer wheel, confirm pin box is at correct height (±1 inch from skid plate ramp top), and ensure head is in Ready-to-Receive position. 2. Back truck slowly into trailer until trailer king pin and 5th wheel funnel align; when indicator turns completely green, the king pin is securely held. 3. Perform pull test: with wheels blocked, landing gears on ground, and trailer brake on, try to pull trailer forward slowly; if properly hitched, trailer will not separate. 4. Insert bail pin into lock hole. 5. Connect electrical and breakaway switch cables. 6. Raise tailgate if necessary and remove chocks/blocks, then lift trailer jacks. Note: If jaw does not close under compression, pull truck slowly forward to remove load on jaw before handle will fully latch.
1. Secure trailer: place blocks/chocks firmly against each trailer wheel and lower landing gears firmly to ground. 2. Prepare truck: lower tailgate if necessary and disconnect electrical and breakaway switch cables. 3. Remove bail pin and move handle to unhitching position (figure 12) by pulling out and rotating towards cab. 4. Drive truck slowly away from trailer. Note: If tension exists between truck and trailer, the handle may start to return to ready-to-receive position, but the trailer will still uncouple.
The center section can be rotated 180 degrees to increase the gap by 1-1/2". The king pin location must be ahead of the truck rear axle with proper truck cab clearance. Note: This rotation is not possible with RAM vehicles. The process involves removing the head, removing bolts holding legs to center section, rotating the center section (and leg assembly if not a RAM), reconnecting per leg instructions, removing and reinstalling the logo/rating badge, removing and flipping head springs from right to left (tightening to 7-8 ft-lbs), reapplying grease, and reinstalling the head.
The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory. If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, adjust the resistance by tightening the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time, with a maximum of 2 full turns. Use an open-end wrench to access the pivot bolt and nut (figure 9B). If noise persists, investigate other grease points as a starting point.
Yes, the pivot assembly can be rebuilt if required. Instructions for rebuilding will be included in a rebuild kit, which must be obtained separately.
A hole is provided on the center section for a 5/16" eye bolt to attach the trailer break-away cable to.
Avoid putting any body parts in pinch points when placing the head unit on top of the center section. When removing the head to rotate the center section for cab clearance, a slight push down on the head will help remove the head retainer pin. Caution: avoid getting fingers pinched. When reinstalling the head, place hands or fingers on either side of the pivot interface to prevent pinching.
Plastic lube plates can be used to avoid messy grease. The plate must not exceed 3/16" in thickness to ensure the hitch works properly. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
After inserting the pull pins and securing them with spring clips on both sides, inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to make sure the clips are assembled correctly, as shown in figure 7.
No. Under normal use, this unit is designed to need very little maintenance and to be one of the quietest on the market. If noise is noticed, investigate the cause and correct it, with grease points being the obvious starting point.

The jaw may not close if it is under compression. If you are fully backed into the trailer and the jaw is not fully latched, pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch. After removing the load, back the truck into the trailer again.
The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory. If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, the resistance needs adjustment. Tighten the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time (maximum 2 full turns). Use an open-end wrench to access the pivot bolt and nut. If noise persists after adjustment, investigate other grease points as a starting point.
If the trailer is not properly hitched, it will separate from the hitch and the truck will move forward during the pull test. This indicates the trailer king pin is not securely held by the 5th wheel jaw. Repeat the hitching procedure from step 1: reposition the truck and trailer, ensure the pin box is at the correct height (±1 inch from skid plate ramp top), confirm the head is in Ready-to-Receive position, and back the truck slowly into the trailer until the indicator turns completely green.
