Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The kit includes: 2 Cross Rails, 2 Outer Frame Brackets (driver's and passenger's side), 2 Front Inner Brackets (driver's and passenger's side), 2 Rear Inner Brackets (driver's and passenger's side), 2 Top Spacers (Long), 2 Bottom Spacers (Short), 2 Frame Spacers, 2 Carriage Bolts (1/2"-13 x 5.5"), 10 Conical Washers (1/2"), 12 M12 x 40mm Flange Head Hex Bolts, 12 M12 Flange Hex Nuts, 6 Hex Nuts (1/2"-13), 4 Hex Bolts (1/2"-13 x 4.5"), and 1 M8 x 30mm Hex Head Bolt. All fasteners are supplied in the Fastener Kit 30952F.
Required tools include: Wrenches/Sockets in 3/4" or 19mm, 13mm, 16mm, 18mm, and T50 TORX Plus; a 3" hole saw drill bit and 1/8" drill bit; a drill, torque wrench, and ratchet. An 18mm crowfoot is optional but may be needed for hardware near the fuel tank.
Pickup bed removal is recommended but not required. If you choose not to remove the bed, you can lift it and support it with 4x4 blocks to provide clearance for installing the center rails. If you do remove the bed, four people are recommended for this task, and the bed should be supported on stands rather than placed directly on the ground.
Before frame bracket installation: (1) Lower and remove the spare tire; (2) Locate the brake junction bracket on the inside of the driver's side frame rail, remove the retaining bolt with a 10mm socket, and free the bracket (the bolt will not be reused); (3) Locate and carefully disconnect electrical cable mounting supports from the driver's side frame rail.
Before drilling, ensure the locating pins shown in Figure 8 are properly installed to both the pickup frame and pickup bed to prevent misalignment. Read the entire Pickup Bed Preparation and Installation section before drilling to reduce risk of damage. Check that pilot holes align with the installed cross rail puck centers, and adjust positions as needed for proper alignment before drilling the final 3" holes.
You must drill 4 holes total: First, use a 1/8" drill bit to create 4 pilot holes according to the reference dimensions in Figure 9 or the template on page 9. After verifying alignment with the cross rail puck centers, drill the final 4 holes using a 3" hole saw. Deburr the rough edges and apply corrosion preventative to the raw edges of all drilled holes.
According to Figure 9, the pilot hole locations are: 3-3/16" (81mm) from the left edge, 5-1/16" (129mm) from the left edge, 21-1/4" (539mm) from the left edge, and 10-7/8" (274mm) from the left edge. The overall reference dimensions are 36-3/8" (925mm) width, 52-9/16" (1335mm) length, 29" (737mm) depth, 14.5" (368.5mm) height, and 16-3/16" (410mm) height. A template is also provided on page 9. If the pickup bed must move rearward to clear the cab, follow Figure 9 for adjusted pilot hole locations.
The vertical M12 x 40mm bolts (item 13) must be tightened to 93 ft-lb (126 Nm). Hardware near the fuel tank may require use of a crowfoot wrench.
The frame bracket 1/2"-13 x 4.5" hex bolts (item 16) must be tightened to 106 ft-lb (144 Nm), ensuring that inner and outer bracket locators are installed into their corresponding frame holes.
The frame bracket 1/2"-13 x 5.5" carriage bolts (item 11) must be tightened to 85 ft-lb (115 Nm).
The M8 x 30mm bolt (item 17) used to secure the brake junction bracket to the driver's side frame rail must be tightened to 18 ft-lb (25 Nm).
The pickup bed bolts must be tightened to 50 ft-lbs (68 Nm).
The fuel filler pipe screws must be tightened to 44 in-lb (5 Nm).
If equipped, the urea filler pipe must be tightened to 22 in-lb (2.5 Nm).
Both center-to-center dimensions should be equal at approximately 33-3/16" (843.4mm), as shown in Figure 7. This dimension is used to verify squareness of the puck mounting locations.
There must be a minimum clearance of 0.039" (1mm) between the pucks and holes in the pickup bed. The puck grooves should sit above the drilled pickup bed holes.
After installation: (1) While inside the pickup bed, inspect the pucks for proper placement—puck grooves should sit above the drilled pickup bed holes with a minimum 0.039" (1mm) clearance between pucks and holes; (2) Clean any debris from the pickup bed; (3) Check the vehicle exterior lighting for proper operation. The MAX DUTY Mounting System is then ready to be used with the REESE 5th Wheel Hitch 30947 or Goose Hitch 30942.
Periodically check and re-torque all hitch fasteners to maintain proper installation integrity.
