Tekonsha trailer brake controller harnesses exist to make connecting your brake controller to your vehicle as easy as possible. These custom two-plug units are specifically designed to be used with any Tekonsha brake controller. The Plug & Play feature on the Tekonsha wiring harnesses makes them easy to install. Simply plug one end of the harness into the back of your desired Tekonsha brake controller and the other end into the port in your vehicle. No cutting, splicing, or taping required.
Each wiring harness is made up of four copper wires wrapped with a braided nylon thread to insulate the wires and protect them against nicks, punctures, and elevated temperatures. The four-pin Plug & Play connectors on each end of the harness are uniquely designed, with one end to fit each vehicle based on make and model year specifications, while the other end plugs easily into any Tekonsha brake controller.
Tekonsha trailer brake controller harnesses are custom designed, giving you plenty of wire to reach between where it is connected to the vehicle and where it connects to the brake controller without stretching or straining the wires. And because Tekonsha is the leader in wiring and electrical, you can relax knowing your connections will be safe and secure, so you can hit the road with confidence! With Tekonsha, Lifes a Journey. Stop Often.

Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The adapter is designed for vehicles that have an Electric Junction Box located in the interior of the vehicle underneath the dashboard, left of the steering column, just above the carpet. The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, or years are compatible. Contact the manufacturer or your vehicle dealer to confirm your vehicle has this junction box before purchasing.
The adapter connects an electric trailer brake control unit to your vehicle's electrical system. It plugs into the mating connection point in the vehicle's Electric Junction Box to supply power and signals for controlling electric trailer brakes.
The Electric Junction Box is located in the interior of the vehicle underneath the dashboard, left of the steering column, just above the carpet. Remove the cover to access the mating connection point for electric trailer brakes, which is located in the top row, second from the left.
Before plugging the adapter into the vehicle, plug the brake control adapter into the mating receptacle on the backside of the brake control unit itself. This must be done before attaching the adapter to the vehicle connector.
Locate the mating connection point in the Electric Junction Box (top row, second from the left) and plug the adapter into it. After plugging in, verify that battery (+) power is supplied to the adapter by carefully probing it with a circuit tester.
After plugging the adapter into the Electric Junction Box, carefully probe it with a circuit tester to verify that battery (+) power is supplied to the adapter.
No. All vehicles come with a location for installation of an Electric Brake Control Adapter, but not all vehicles have complete connections to the battery and/or wiring to the rear of the vehicle for electric trailer brakes. If your vehicle has power supplied for the electric trailer brakes and appropriate wiring to the rear, proceed directly to step 4. If not, you will need an Electric Brake Control Wiring Kit.
You will need an Electric Brake Control Wiring Kit. This kit includes wires to connect the vehicle's brake control feed wire (blue) and battery (+) power supply wire (red) from the Electrical Center Box under the hood to the adapter and rear of the vehicle. An in-line fuse or circuit breaker is also required for this installation.
The Electrical Center Box is located under the hood on the driver's side of the vehicle. You must open the hood and remove the box lid and cover to access the brake control feed wire (blue) and battery (+) supply wire (red).
The vehicle's brake control feed wire is blue. It is located in the Electrical Center Box under the hood on the driver's side.
The vehicle's battery (+) power supply wire is red. It is located in the Electrical Center Box under the hood on the driver's side, in the same location as the blue brake control feed wire.
Yes. To access the brake control feed wire (blue) in the Electrical Center Box, you must temporarily remove the vehicle's support brace. After installing the wiring kit, reinstall the Electrical Center Box cover, lid, and support brace.
Yes. An in-line fuse or circuit breaker is required if you are using an Electric Brake Control Wiring Kit to complete the installation.
After installing the wiring kit, reinstall the Electrical Center Box cover, lid, and support brace. Then plug the brake control adapter into the vehicle's electric brake control harness connector and follow all brake control manufacturer's installation instructions.

Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating or a maximum of 4 axles with 8 brakes (24 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating or a maximum of 4 axles with 8 brakes (24 amps).
The adapter fits vehicles with an Electric Junction Box located under the dashboard, left of the steering column. Check your vehicle's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer to confirm compatibility.
If your vehicle lacks complete electric trailer brake wiring, you will need an Electric Brake Control Wiring Kit and an in-line fuse or circuit breaker. You will also need a circuit tester to verify power.
1. Plug the adapter into the brake control unit first. 2. Locate the Electric Junction Box under the dashboard and plug the adapter in. 3. Verify power with a circuit tester. 4. If wiring is incomplete, install a wiring kit. 5. Follow the brake control manufacturer's instructions.
An in-line fuse or circuit breaker is required only if you need to install an Electric Brake Control Wiring Kit due to incomplete vehicle wiring.
Maximum 4 axles with 8 brakes (24 amps), or the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating. Do not exceed this to prevent fire risk.
