Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

Yes, the 3037-037 is designed for the BMW X5. However, the installation requires an existing black 4-pin connector on the passenger side near the tail light pocket. If your vehicle does not have this connector, the adapter cannot be installed as described in the manual. Consult the manufacturer or a dealer to confirm your specific model year and trim are compatible.
The 3037-037 is an electric trailer brake control wiring adapter that connects the brake control harness to the vehicle's existing electrical system. It allows you to control an electric trailer brake system from your BMW X5.
You will need a test-probe and a trim panel remover. These are the only tools specified in the installation manual.
The manual requires that the vehicle be off with the keys removed from the ignition before beginning installation. It does not explicitly require battery disconnection, but you must ensure the vehicle is powered off.
You must remove the following from the passenger side: (1) trim panels and floor coverings from the cargo compartment moving forward, (2) the passenger side door sill and lower trim panels, (3) the front passenger side door sill, dashboard lower trim panels under the glovebox, and passenger side console trim panel. Set all removed items aside carefully.
On the passenger side near the tail light pocket, connect the brake control harness to the existing black mating 4-pin connector that is already present on the vehicle.
Route the brake control harness along the existing wire harness, down the door sill to the front passenger compartment, then up under the dashboard and across to the driver's side compartment. Follow the path of existing wiring to minimize the risk of damage.
When routing the wire through a grommet and along the interior of the vehicle, be careful to avoid any other points that may pinch or break the wire. When reinstalling trim panels, be careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
Yes. The manual states: 'Follow all brake control manufacturer's installation instructions.' You must read and follow the installation instructions provided by the brake control unit manufacturer as well as this adapter manual.
Do not exceed the lower of: (1) the towing manufacturer's rating (including the rating in your vehicle owner's manual), or (2) the specific amperage ratings stated on the product itself. Check both your vehicle manual and the product label to determine the applicable limit.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product before beginning. Read, understand and follow all warnings and instructions printed on the tow vehicle's battery. Keep all documentation for future reference.
