The Trailer Tester is designed to help you quickly identify problems in the wiring of the trailer. This is done by testing the Left Turn, Right Turn, Tail/Marker, Brake and Back Up circuits on the trailer. The tester indicates approximate amount of current in each circuit. It will also test the voltage of the external battery connected to the trailer charge circuit (i.e. trailer battery).

Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The Trailer Tester (part no. 8010) is designed to quickly identify problems in trailer wiring such as opens, shorts, and incorrect wiring. It tests the Left Turn, Right Turn, Tail/Marker, Brake, and Backup circuits on the trailer by indicating the approximate amount of current used in each circuit. It also tests the voltage of an external battery connected to the trailer charge circuit (trailer battery).
The 8010 Tester can test five trailer circuits: Left Turn, Right Turn, Tail/Marker, Brake, and Backup. It measures the approximate amount of current used in each circuit and can also test the voltage of an external trailer battery.
You must use only the charger part no. 8008 provided with the 8010 Tester. No other charger should be used.
Before plugging the trailer connector into the tester, verify that the mating surfaces of the trailer wiring connector match the Trailer Tester connector. All connector surfaces should be clean and free of dirt. Ensure the trailer tester battery is fully charged. Then plug the trailer connector firmly into the Trailer Tester and ensure the connector is fully inserted.
Turn the switch on. All LEDs will cycle in order from top to bottom and left to right and will flash once. When this cycle completes, the tester is ready for use.
Green LEDs 2, 3, and 4 in the Power Row indicate that the internal battery is OK to perform tests. These LEDs remain lit after power has been turned on and show the battery has sufficient charge.
A flashing red LED 1 in the Power Row means that the internal battery needs to be charged or may need to be replaced. Charge the battery using the charger part no. 8008.
A solid red LED 5 in the Power Row indicates that the battery is faulty or overcharged. The battery may need to be replaced.
No. The trailer tester will not function while the internal battery is being charged. You must wait until charging is complete before using the tester.
When charging the 8010 Tester using charger part no. 8008, the LED on the charger will be red while charging. The LED on the charger will turn green when the battery is fully charged.
Yes. If the unit is OFF, no LEDs will be lit, but the battery will still charge when the charger is plugged into the charger socket.
When the charger is plugged into the charger socket, a flashing red LED 5 on the Power Row indicates that the unit is ON. This is normal during charging.
Press the AUTO TEST button. When pressed, its indicator green LED begins to flash. Each channel will be tested from top to bottom. Red LED 5 will flash as its channel is tested. Green LEDs will remain on to indicate the amount of load on each channel. Refer to Step 6 for LED display load readouts and Step 7 for LED fault indication readouts.
Press any manual button to test that specific channel. The channel will flash 11 times, allowing you to walk around the trailer and confirm that the lights are functioning properly. The tester will automatically shut down after three minutes to conserve the battery.
To clear the display or turn off auto test, simply press the auto test button. Then you are ready to test again.
For Left/Stop, Right/Stop, and Backup channels: Green LED 1 represents 0.25 amps, Green LED 2 represents 2 amps, Green LED 3 represents 3 amps, and Green LED 4 represents 4 amps.
For Tail load readouts: Green LED 1 represents 0.25 amps, Green LED 2 represents 4 amps, Green LED 3 represents 6 amps, and Green LED 4 represents 8 amps.
For Brake load readouts: Green LED 1 represents 1 axle, Green LED 2 represents 2 axles, Green LED 3 represents 3 axles, and Green LED 4 represents 4 axles.
A flashing red LED 5 on an affected channel indicates an interchannel short or reversed wires in that circuit.
A solid red LED 5 on an affected channel indicates no load or an open circuit in that channel.
All green LEDs 1-4 and red LED 5 solid on an affected channel indicate an overload condition in that circuit.
All green LEDs 1-4 and red LED 5 flashing on an affected channel indicate a short circuit to ground in that circuit.
Press the EXT BAT button. When pressed, its indicator red LED will light. Voltage will be displayed by lit LEDs in the Power Row only. This test will automatically stop after a few seconds and the red light will go out.
When testing external battery voltage, green LEDs 2 and 3 indicate that the external battery has normal voltage.
When testing external battery voltage, a flashing red LED 1 indicates that the external battery needs to be charged or may need replacement.
When testing external battery voltage, a solid red LED 5 indicates that the battery is faulty or overcharged. The battery may need replacement.
No. The external battery test does not indicate the amount of charge left in the trailer battery. This test excludes breakaway batteries.

Auto test measures the amount of current load on each channel automatically. Manual test allows you to press a button to flash a specific channel 11 times so you can visually confirm lights are working while walking around the trailer.
