The Curt 56046 is a custom wiring harness designed to provide trailer lighting connections for a Chevrolet Impala. It connects to the vehicle's existing taillight wiring and terminates in a 4-flat connector for trailer use.
The manual specifies the Curt 56046 is designed for Chevrolet Impala passenger cars. For confirmation that your specific model year and body style are compatible, check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer, as the manual does not list specific model years.
You will need a flat blade screwdriver and a panel trim removal tool. If a suitable grounding point with an existing screw is not available, you will also need a drill to create a 3/32" pilot hole.
The harness includes a screw and ring terminal for grounding, cable ties for securing loose wires, and a 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. Consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for guidance on electrical work safety procedures.
Open the tailgate and remove the plastic fastener and wing nut on both sides securing the rear scuff panel. Pull the scuff panel out at the bottom then up, taking care not to damage the alignment tabs. On the passenger side, pull back the felt trunk liner to reveal three plastic wing nuts securing the taillight. Remove these wing nuts and pull the taillight away from the vehicle, again protecting the alignment tabs. The vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors will then be visible under the taillight housing.
Separate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end between the separated connectors. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint. If no existing screw is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
Drilling is required only if a suitable grounding point with an existing screw is not available near the connector. If drilling is necessary, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Remove the grommet behind the taillight housing and make a small slit from the outside of the grommet to the center. Route the 4-flat wire through the grommet to the inside of the trunk and re-seat the grommet. When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk.
Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties to prevent tangling and ensure safe routing.
Reinstall all items removed during installation, including the rear scuff panel, taillight housing, and felt trunk liner. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion of the connector.
All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer.
