The 06 - 15 Mazda MX-5 Miata Excluding appearance package 1.25in. CURT Trailer Hitch + Ball Mount + Cover + Lock Kit by CURT HWA1816 (Part #HWA1816) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Part number 11028 is designed for 2006–current Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible models. However, it excludes vehicles with the Appearance Package. Verify your vehicle does not have the Appearance Package before purchasing.
When used as a weight-carrying hitch, the gross load capacity is 2,000 lbs trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower.
You will need: socket wrench with 9/16" and 11/16" sockets, torque wrench, drill with 7/16" drill bit, and rotary tool with cutoff wheel. A torque wrench is essential because fasteners must be torqued to specific values (3/8" fasteners to 45 lb-ft and 7/16" fasteners to 70 lb-ft).
You do not need to remove the muffler completely, but you must lower it for ease of installation. To do this, remove the four rubber isolators that support the muffler. After installing the hitch, raise the muffler back into position.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill holes in the frame rails to accommodate 7/16" fasteners. The manual specifies using a 7/16" drill bit. Additionally, you must enlarge existing access holes on the frame rails to allow CM-SP2 spacers and 7/16" carriage bolts to pass through.
Yes, fascia trimming is required. You must trim a 1 3/4" by 3/4" opening in the center of the lower rear fascia. A rotary tool with cutoff wheel is recommended for this task.
All 3/8" carriage bolts and nuts must be torqued to 45 lb-ft. There are eight 3/8" fasteners total that connect the side plates and center section mounting plates.
All 7/16" carriage bolts and hex flange nuts must be torqued to 70 lb-ft. These fasteners secure the hitch to the frame rails through the spacers.
The kit includes: 6 × 7/16"-14 UNC carriage bolts (1-1/2" length, Grade 8), 4 × 0.250" × 0.88" × 2.25" square hole spacers (CM-SP2), 6 × 7/16"-14 UNC serrated flange nuts, 8 × 3/8"-16 × 1" carriage bolts, 8 × 3/8"-16 UNC serrated flange nuts, 1 × 7/16" fishwire, 1 × driver side plate (CM-11028-DS), and 1 × passenger side plate (CM-11028-PS).
1. Trim a 1 3/4" × 3/4" opening in the lower rear fascia. 2. Lower the muffler by removing four rubber isolators. 3. Remove plastic caps from frame rails and enlarge access holes. 4. Install 7/16" carriage bolts and nuts through center section straps. 5. Use fishwire to thread 7/16" carriage bolts and spacers through enlarged frame rail holes and out existing holes. 6. Raise the muffler and side plates, securing side plates with 7/16" hardware and hex flange nuts. 7. Loosely install all eight 3/8" carriage bolts and nuts through side plates and center section mounting plates. 8. Torque all 3/8" fasteners to 45 lb-ft. 9. Using the hitch as a template, drill remaining holes in frame rails for 7/16" fasteners. 10. Fishwire remaining 7/16" carriage bolts and spacers through the access hole and out drilled holes. Secure with 7/16" hex flange nuts and reinstall plastic plugs. 11. Torque all 7/16" fasteners to 70 lb-ft.
Fishwire (included in the kit) is a flexible wire used to thread fasteners and spacers through tight or difficult-to-access areas. During installation, you use the 7/16" fishwire to guide 7/16" carriage bolts and CM-SP2 spacers through the enlarged access holes in the frame rails and out the existing holes, and later through the access hole and out newly drilled holes. This technique avoids the need to remove components or access the frame from underneath.
The eight 3/8" carriage bolts and nuts are installed loosely in Step 7 to allow the hitch to be positioned and aligned correctly before drilling the remaining frame rail holes in Step 8. Once the hitch is properly positioned and the remaining holes are drilled, the 3/8" fasteners are torqued to 45 lb-ft in Step 7 (second instance), and the 7/16" fasteners are torqued to 70 lb-ft in Step 10.
The hitch is designed for use with Curt ballmount models #55001 or #45501. Consult the ballmount documentation or contact Curt Manufacturing to confirm compatibility with other ballmount models.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This is especially important before towing. If any fasteners have loosened, retorque them to the specified values: 3/8" fasteners to 45 lb-ft and 7/16" fasteners to 70 lb-ft.
No. The Curt 11028 hitch excludes vehicles with the Appearance Package. If your MX-5 Miata has the Appearance Package, this hitch is not compatible.
