The Curt 56174 is a T-Connector wiring harness designed for the Fiat 500. It integrates with the vehicle's existing taillight wiring to enable trailer lighting control. The system includes a converter box, T-Connector ends with colour-coded wires (yellow and green), a ground wire, and a 4-flat connector for trailer use.
The manual specifies the Curt 56174 is designed for the Fiat 500. The manual does not identify any model year restrictions, cab styles, bed lengths, or other variants. Contact Curt Manufacturing technical support at 1-877-287-8634 to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle year and configuration.
The manual requires a Phillips screwdriver (to remove rear scuff panel screws) and a 10mm hex wrench or socket (to remove taillight housing bolts). A drill with a 3/32" bit is needed if you must create a grounding hole. The manual does not specify whether additional tools are required.
The kit includes a T-Connector with two colour-coded ends (yellow and green wires), a black converter box, a white ground wire with eyelet, double-sided tape for securing the converter box, a screw for the ground wire, cable ties for securing wires, and a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The manual does not list all fasteners or specify quantities.
Open the rear hatch and remove the two Phillips screws securing the rear scuff panel. Lift up the rear portion of the felt floor covering, then pull out the bottom of the scuff panel and lift it up to remove it. This provides access to the taillight housing. Remove the two 10mm hex bolts securing the taillight housing and remove it from the vehicle. Carefully separate the taillight connectors, taking care not to damage the locking tabs.
Route the T-Connector end with the yellow wire through the hole in the chassis on the driver's side. Cut a slit in the rubber grommet and route the T-Connector end through it. Insert the yellow-wire end between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. On the passenger side, repeat this process using the T-Connector end with the green wire. Use the provided cable ties to secure wires to existing wiring harnesses.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle behind the felt liner of the trunk. Adhere the black converter box to the frame of the vehicle using the double-sided tape provided. The converter box should be positioned near a suitable grounding point.
Drilling is required only if a suitable grounding point does not already exist near the converter box. If an existing screw with nut is not available in the vehicle's frame, you must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the eyelet of the white ground wire. The manual warns to verify miscellaneous items hidden behind or under surfaces before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
The battery connection must be fuse protected with a maximum of 10 amps. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Do not exceed the tow vehicle's lamp load rating or the product rating, whichever is lower.
Signal Circuits: 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running Circuits: 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
The T-Connector has two colour-coded ends: yellow wire (driver's side) and green wire (passenger's side). Each end connects to the corresponding taillight connector on its respective side of the vehicle. The white wire is the ground wire with an eyelet for securing to the vehicle frame.
The manual directs you to review the CME-PCL-INS instruction sheet for specific power wire routing from the battery to the converter. The battery connection must be fuse protected with a maximum 10 amp fuse. Refer to the CME-PCL-INS sheet for the exact routing path and connection procedure.
Before drilling, verify that miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface will not be damaged. This includes checking for existing wiring, fuel lines, brake lines, or other components that could be damaged by drilling. Failure to do so can result in damage to the vehicle and personal injury.
The battery connection must use a maximum 10 amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Additionally, do not exceed the tow vehicle's lamp load rating or the product rating (Signal Circuits: 3.0 amps per side; Tail/Running Circuits: 6.0 amps total), whichever is lower.
Route the 4-flat connector out from under the felt trunk liner and to the center of the vehicle when in use. When not in use, roll it up and store it in an out-of-the-way location to prevent damage and maintain a clean interior.
After installation, verify that all removed items have been reinstalled, including the rear scuff panel, taillight housings, and trunk liner. Ensure all T-Connector ends are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Check that the converter box is securely adhered and the ground wire is properly secured. Test the trailer lighting to confirm proper operation before towing.
