Yes, the Curt 56280 is designed for Mazda 6 passenger cars. The installation instructions are specific to this vehicle model.
The harness has two circuit ratings: Signal Circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side, and Tail/Running Circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. You must not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse. Exceeding this specification can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
Yes, you must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. This is the first step in the installation process.
You will need: a panel trim removal tool, flat blade screwdriver, wire stripper, wire crimper, and cutting tool.
You must remove the trunk floor coverings, two side storage trays (secured by push fasteners), the rear scuff panel, and pull back the felt liner to access the taillight wiring harness connectors on both the driver and passenger sides.
The custom wiring harness has colour-coded ends that insert between the vehicle's existing taillight connectors. The yellow wire end inserts between the 2-pin connectors, and the brown wire end inserts between the 3-pin connectors. The green wire end is used on the passenger side. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
The white ground wire must be secured to a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable existing screw is available, you may drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint. Use the ring terminal and provided screw to secure the wire.
Drilling may be required for the ground wire connection. If no suitable existing screw with nut is available in the vehicle frame near the connector, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The black converter box should be adhered to a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight using the provided double-sided tape. The location should be convenient and out of the way.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly.
