Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Mitsubishi Outlander (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 4,000 lbs. GTW and 600 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 4,000 lbs. WD and 600 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Mitsubishi Outlander (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

Yes. Step 2 requires lowering the exhaust by removing 3 rubber isolators. You must support the exhaust as needed to prevent damage. After completing the hitch installation, the exhaust is raised back into position in Step 7.
Fishwire hardware consists of carriage bolts and spacers that are threaded through existing frame rail holes without requiring drilling. The installation includes 1/2" fishwire and 7/16" fishwire. If weldnuts do not exist in the frame rails, 7/16" carriage bolts and spacers are fishwired into the frame rails as shown in the installation diagram (Step 3). On the passenger side, 1/2-13 x 4-1/2" carriage bolts are fishwired through the passenger side plate and out the frame rail (Step 5).
On the passenger side frame rail, you may need to back out the inner bumper bolt to allow the hitch to be fully raised in Step 3. If you back out this bolt, you must tighten and torque it to 25 ft-lbs in Step 5.
You may need to lower or pull down on the spare tire to allow the carriage bolts to slide through the frame rail on the driver side (Step 4).

The Curt 56189 fits Mitsubishi Outlander models, excluding the Sport variant. It is designed for SUVs, Mini and Full-Sized Vans (S category). If you have an Outlander Sport, this harness is not compatible. Check your vehicle's specific trim level before purchasing.
The Curt 56189 has a maximum amperage rating of 3.0 amps per side for signal circuits and 6.0 amps total for tail/running circuits. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or your tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Do not exceed the product rating or your tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
You will need a Phillips screwdriver, a flat blade screwdriver, and a panel trim removal tool. These are the only tools specified in the installation instructions.
The installation instructions do not specify whether the battery must be disconnected before beginning installation. Contact Curt Manufacturing or your vehicle manufacturer for this safety requirement before starting work.
Drilling may be required. Step 5 instructs you to locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw if no existing point is available. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The custom wiring harness end with the yellow wire is inserted between the separated taillight connectors on the driver side. The connectors must be fully inserted with locking tabs in place. This is done after removing the plastic side wall panels to access the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors.
The custom wiring harness end with the green wire is routed to the passenger side behind the removed scuff panels and inserted between the separated taillight connectors on the passenger side, following the same procedure as the yellow wire on the driver side (Steps 3-4).
The black converter box must be adhered using the provided double-sided tape to a flat, clean surface that is out of the path of spray and debris from the rear wheels and road. Failure to mount the box in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
Test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness will function properly. Testing confirms that the connections are secure and the harness is operating correctly.
The Curt 56189 includes a custom wiring harness with yellow and green wire ends, a black converter box, a white ground wire with ring terminal and provided screw, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, a 4-flat dust cover, and cable ties for securing loose wires.
The ground wire is white. It is secured using the ring terminal and provided screw to a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame, or to a 3/32" pilot hole drilled in the frame if no existing point is available.
If no existing screw with nut is available in the vehicle frame, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided ground screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt, and paint before securing the white ground wire.
You must remove the tailgate floor and cloth roll cover, the plastic floor liner, the scuff panel, and the plastic side panels (three Phillips screws per side). On the passenger side, also remove the inspection cover from the side panel. These removals provide access to the taillight wiring harness connectors.
There are three Phillips screws securing the plastic side panels on each side (driver and passenger) of the hatch. Take care not to damage the alignment tabs on the back of the scuff panel when removing it.
