For compact cars, sedans and crossovers, a class 1 hitch provides a functional rear receiver tube for attaching a hitch-mounted cargo carrier or bike rack or for towing a light-duty trailer. Class 1 receiver hitches make it easy to pack the things you want without having to cram the trunk or even the backseat full of cargo. Like all CURT custom trailer hitches, each class 1 trailer hitch is designed to fit a specific vehicle application. A vehicle-specific design ensures the best possible fit with the simplest and most secure installation. This particular class 1 hitch offers a custom fit for certain years of the Ford Focus (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the application information or use the Vehicle Lookup tool). The custom-fit design optimizes the installation to eliminate all unnecessary modifications, and it promotes an integrated look with the vehicle�s existing design features and layout. This Ford Focus hitch is rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and 200 lbs. tongue weight. This makes it an excellent choice for any cargo carrier or bike rack as well as a variety of lightweight trailers (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). It features a 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver tube to accept a ball mount or other trailer hitch accessories. The hitch receiver tube also has an open back to allow for easy cleaning as needed. Finally, we finish each trailer hitch with a unique co-curing process. First, we immerse the hitch in a rust-resistant liquid A-coat to coat the entire piece inside and out. Then, a durable black powder coat is applied to seal out rain, dirt, road salt and other threats. Finally, these two coatings are co-cured together, creating an industry-leading rust, chip and UV-resistant finish. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Ford Focus hatchback (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). Open the tailgate and remove all trunk floor coverings and storage trays. Remove the rear scuff panel by removing push fasteners and pulling out at the bottom then up. On the driver side, remove two fasteners from the side trim panel, pull it back, then remove the taillight assembly fasteners. Gently pull the taillight rearward and out to access the connectors behind it.
Locate the grommet with wires running from inside the trunk to the taillight. Make a small slit in the grommet large enough to route the harness wires through. Route the wiring harness end with the yellow wire out through the grommet opening and through the slit. Insert the harness end with the yellow wire between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Seat the grommet with the harness wires passing through.
The manual requires you to use a sealant (not included) to seal the grommet where the wires pass through and where the grommet was cut. The specific type of sealant is not specified in the manual; consult the vehicle manufacturer or a sealant supplier for a product suitable for automotive trunk grommets.
